DeSmet salvaged its season Friday night and, as usual, the victim was CBC.

The Spartans, down 10-0 in the first quarter at CBC, rallied with a field goal and three long scoring drives as they stunned the Post-Dispatch No. 11-ranked large school, 24-10. The victory rekindled playoff hopes for DeSmet (4-4) and might have snuffed out CBC's (6-3). DeSmet now leads the series, 11-3, and has won seven of the last eight games. The winner of next Friday's game at Busch Stadium between Vianney and DeSmet will claim one playoff berth.

The other berth in the district could go to either St. Louis U. High or CBC, who also play Friday at Busch. If SLUH wins, it is in. CBC, however, must win and pray for help from its opponents.

Andy Henderson rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries and teammate Brad Cross piled up 135 yards on 19 carries for DeSmet. Duchesne High, the Post-Dispatch No. 1-ranked small school and No. 1 in both statewide polls, almost had its playoff express derailed Friday night. The Pioneers needed an 11-yard touchdown pass from Mike Taylor to Brian Wies with 28 seconds to play to beat St.

Charles West, 31-28. Wies led Duchesne (9-0) by scoring four touchdowns. Receiver Ron Reimer caught seven passes for 185 yards and Taylor completed 12 of 21 passes for 242 yards. Doug Ferguson scored four times for St. Charles West (5-4).

Duchesne, which has finished its regular-season games, compiled the first regular-season unbeaten mark in the school's history. In doing so, it won the school's first Gateway Athletic Conference title since 1975. Althoff (4-3) showed why it is the No. 5-ranked Post-Dispatch small school with a 13-12 victory over No. 19 large school St.

Charles (7-2) at Lindenwotfi College. Althoff's Kevin Schott sewed the winning TD on a nine-yard run with 4:14 to play. The Crusaders held Charles Hillemann, St. Charles' top rusher, to 55 yards. In another game in St.
