upbeat 4E Dec. 28,1984 SILDUIS POST-DISPATCH Cash Box Confidential KHTR'sTop30 By George Albert Here is this week's St. Louis Hitradio Record Report, compiled by radio station KHTR (FM 103): This Week Weeks Last On Week England Thinks The Gang Is Cool Last summer, Kool and the Gang took time off from recording their new album, "Emergency," to fly to London for an appearance as Elton John's special guests at Wembley Stadium. The American act won three standing ovations from the crowd of 80,000. A few months later, when Julian Lennon spotted the band members backstage at "Good Morning America," where both he and they were taping segments, Lennon's eyes lit up with recognition.

Both incidents were indicative of the stature Kool and the Gang is achieving in the '80s. Kool and the Gang's recent British success has been remarkable. The band's 1983 LP, "In the Heart," lodged three singles in the British Top 15, "Joanna," "In the Heart" and "Straight Ahead." According to England's Record Mirror, "Kool and the Gang's '70s work has been a major influence on much of today's popular music, and the '80s has seen them notch-up hit after hit." But that's nothing compared with what the band has achieved in the United States. Here, Kool and the Gang has become the most successful pop band of the '80s. Since Jan.

1 1 980, the band has had 1 0 Top 40 singles. And, in the last four years, Kool and the Gang has had five gold LPs in a row; three of which also went platinum. In fact, the band has had a career total of 1 6 Top 40 hits one of the greatest totals ever accumulated by any group. Kool and the Gang have followed their plans, always reaching toward a higher plane. "We remember what we went through," says Robert "Kool" Bell, the band's leader.

"We remind each other constantly that it wasn't always roses." 1 Like a Virgin Madonna 2 5 2 Born in the US A Bruce Springsteen 9 7 3 Sea of Love The Honeydrippers 4 9 4 The Wild Boys DuranDuran 1 9 5 We Belong PatBenatar 5 6 Out of Touch 3 12 7 Valotte Julian Lennon II 9 8 Run to You Bryan Adams 12 7 9 You're the Inspiration Chicago 13 5 10 I Had a Dream Roger Hodgson 14 7 11 I Can't Hold Back Survivor 6 14 12 All Through the Night CyndiLauper 7 11 13 No More Lonely Nights Paul McCartney 8 10 14 All I Need Jack Wagner 23 4 15 Understanding BobSeger 17 5 16 Hello Again The Cars 18 7 17 Cool It Now New Edition 21 5 18 I Feel for You ChakaKahn 10 11 19 The Belle of Sf. By James Henke 1984, Rolling Stone Magazine Kodak ftsz 3100 Camera Value Pack: Chinese Wall Philip Bailey (Columbia) By putting his beautiful voice in the hands of multitalented pop maestro Phil Collins, Earth, Wind and Fire singer Philip Bailey has made an album that should get heard in a variety of quarters. "Easy Lover," the hit duet between Bailey and Collins, is a guitar-dominated pop-rock tune; "Photogenic Memory" is an electro-pop number; and "Show You the Way To Love" and "Children of the Ghetto" are pretty ballads on which Bailey uses his remarkable falsetto.

This is not as funky as Earth, Wind and Fire, but it's a hundred times more appealing. Down to Earth Jonzun Crew (Tommy Boy) This is one of the best albums of the year. The eight tunes here span the gamut of current black pop from techno-funk dance tracks to sweet, sexy ballads Going All the and there's not a bad song in the bunch. Most impressive, though, is that this is virtually a one-man show: Michael Jonzun produced the LP, wrote or co-wrote all the songs, sings lead and plays several instruments. 28.88 Sale Price 20 10.00 'Less Mf g's Rebate 0(0 If 4 jkss Pat Benatar Oo(D)(D) Michael London: The otticial tpoltMman tor Few Photo.

Still, there's plenty of classic Foreigner material here, including both heavy ballads Want to Know What Love Is," "Down on and all-out rockers and Nail," "Reaction to Action," "She's Too Perfect Stranger Deep Purple (Mercury) Not a lot of thought or effort appears to have gone into this reunion album. There are hardly any real songs here; instead, the LP consists of a bunch of simple riffs around which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore do some pretty uninspired jamming. That this record is a commercial success in the mid-'80s say a lot about the state of heavy metal. This one low price buys you all you'll need to preserve memories all year! Tropico Pat Benatar (Chrysalis) Perhaps it's her impending motherhood, but for some reason Pat Benatar has softened her sound considerably on this album. The result is a disaster. Benatar doesn't have an expressive enough voice for this kind of material, and her band just pounds through the songs without any hint of subtlety.
