i 5 DEC 23 .1934 SILOUIS POST-DISPATCH Dec 23, 1 984 Cabbage Patch Doll Craze Shows No Sign Here Of Letting Up 600 Attend Funeral For Boy Who Had Been Decapitated About 100 shoppers cleared the aisles at noon Saturday at Colman's discount store in Webster Groves to gather in the front of the store in hopes of winning a new Cabbage Patch doll. Children, mothers, grandmothers, fathers, grandfathers and even adults without children held tickets until the first winning number was called at the store, 8400 Watson Road. The store gave away 10 dolls. Josephine Finn, 35, of Crestwood, won the first of the pudgy-faced dolls. It carried the name Lenora Whitney.

"I have been looking for them, Ms. Finn said. "It's always been too late by the time I get to them. She said she would give the doll to her 1 -year-old daughter. The doll giveaway was yet another sign that Cabbage Patch fever has yet to subside, despite this being the second holiday season that the dolls have been marketed.

Since Cabbage Patch dolls were introduced last year, the demand has increased, according to Joe Minor, manager of the Toy Chest store in Alton. In Saturday's Post-Dispatch, 22 classified ads listed Cabbage Patch dolls for sale, at prices ranging from $35 to $200. miteral notices VOGT. RAYMOND of Waterloo IN formerly ot St LomS Mo Dec 21. 1984 dear hus Anger and grief, along with gratitude for the community's outpouring of support, were in abundance during a two-hour funeral in north St.

Louis County on Saturday for 10-year-old Alfred M. Foote who was beaten to death and decapitated earlier in the week. About 600 relatives, friends and strangers who have been touched by the family's plight attended. The funeral was at San Francisco Temple at 10191 Halls Ferry Road, Jennings. A relative, Saint McElroy of University City, said the crowd at the funeral was yet another expression of the generosity that had come in many forms this week to Alfred's parents, Alfred Sr.

and Sharon. "This tremendous turnout is an inspiration to the family," she said. "I talked with the father, and he said that what he had dreamed of after his son was killed had come true that their friends would stand beside them. They will get through this with courage, prayers and friends." Earlier, plans called for the funeral to be at Foster and Sons Funeral Home, 1221 North Grand Boulevard, which provided the funeral at no cost. But the Rev.

Dwight McDaniel pastor of the North County church, offered his larger building because of the crowd that was expected. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Matthew Ferguson, pastor of Abundant Life Fellowship, 9864 Jacobi Street, Moline. Ferguson said Alfred's parents were among the 300 members of his church. Alfred's body was found Tuesday morning at the bottom of a stairwell behind a vacant house at 5640 Kennerly Avenue.

He had been beaten to death and then decapitated. The boy's uncle, Michael Foote, 28, has been charged wiih first-degree murder. Alfred and a younger brother had been left in Michael Foote's care while the boys' father took his mother to a hospital after she suffered what apparently had been a stroke. Ferguson said, "In the situations we are faced with in life, many times we don't know the answer. I believe that Jesus Christ understands without reservation every situation we now face, whether minute or large.

So we are not alone today. We are not without support or strength." The service ended with mourners filing by the casket as a 30-voice choir chanted, "Jesus, Jesus, in every hour, you give me power to go through." Burial was at St Peter's Cemetery, 2101 Lucas and Hunt Road, Velda Village. About 15 teachers and administrators from the Parkway School District attended the funeral. Although Alfred lived in the 4100 block of North Florissant Avenue in north St Louis, he had been a student since September 1983, at Mason Ridge Elementary School in Creve Coeur because of the voluntary areawide desegregation program. George Ramsey, Mason Ridge principal, said that for emotional release he had written a letter to Alfred's parents during the funeral.

Ramsey wrote, "I think that among Alfred's questions when he stepped off that school bus l'J years ago must have been, 'Can they be trusted? Do they care? Will they give me a chance? Can I make We tested each other, sometimes severely. Through those many encounters, a bond was forming between us, principal to student, boy to man, friend to friend. "I am truly sorry we did not have time to continue to nurture our relationship for him to learn more from me, and me from him." Obituaries Rev. Vincent J.
