Pea Patch Soup Keeps Family Happy What's Cooking to a benefit sale at St. Louis Children's Hospital and the animals were well received. She quit her job at the Arts and Education Council so she could concentrate on her new business.

"I had always wanted to do something on my own," Mrs. Hehmann said. Currently, she sells Pea Patch Pets in several shops here and in other parts of the country and she also donates some to worthy organizations and hospitals. Mrs. Hehmann lives in Glendale with her husband, Fred, who works for Aetna Life and Casualty Company.

They have two sons, both of whom are in medical school. On cold winter days, the Hehmanns like to sit down to big bowls of homemade pea soup. "Michael (her son) has always loved peas, even as a child, and my inlaws love peas, too," she said. "I love to cook, so I combined a number of recipes to find just the right soup. And this time of year, I make it a lot." Luckily, the Pea Patch Pets leave plenty of pea soup for the rest of the family.

PEA PATCH PEA SOUP Jo Hehmann, Glendale 1 (16-ounce) package dried split peas (2 cups) 1 (2-pound) smoked ham shank 2 quarts water 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoon dried basil leaves 1 small onion, chopped 6 peppercorns 2 medium ribs celery, sliced 1 medium carrot, chopped In a large saucepan, combine peas, ham shank, water, salt, basil, onion and peppercorns. Simmer, covered, 1 hour. Stir in celery and carrots. Simmer for another hour, or until peas are tender and soup thickens. Remove and discard peppercorns.

Remove ham shank, cut meat from bone and return meat to soup. Heat through. Yield: 6 to 8 servings. fhs Doctors Of By Patricia Corrigan Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Bears, dogs, koalas and raccoons reign supreme in Jo Hehmann's house. She didn't plan to grow up to be zookeeper of a stuffed menagerie, but she's not complaining either.

Mrs. Hehmann developed Pea Patch Pets stuffed animals that come with "official" pedigrees and little T-shirts that read "I love my owner." The animals are symbolic clones of Mrs. Hehmann's dachshund, Trudy. "One day I was looking at Trudy and thinking how wonderful she is and I thought 'Trudy should be cloned'," she said. As the idea developed, Mrs.

Hehmann set about inspecting stuffed animals. She had an artist design a pedigree form and the T-shirts. In July, she donated her first four "pets" IT'S FOR YOU AND EVERYONE.
