ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH June 17, 1984 7F Wdtson: 1 Mn't HsndlleThe Pressure MB74 Sports swung the club and said I just wasn't staying down on the ball long enough in the last round because of my quickness. 1 "It was much needed (encouragement) at the time. Somebody who could really play the game telling me, 'Hey, you're a good, young player and you do things I'd like to talk to you about. If you ever want to talk to me, I'd like to work with you "That's awful nice coming from a prior to the start of the Open.

"As long as I can play golf on a level I'm comfortable with, I'll continue to play," he said. "My name happens to be Nicklaus and I want to play like him. I don't need any imposters out there. That's not a lot of fun. It's getting to the stage in my life where I wonder how long I'm going to play and bow well." Nicklaus said he had read several times speculation that if he won another big tournament he would quit, going out a winner.

That probably won't happen, he said. "After winning the Memorial," he said, "if I had any sense I'd have said, 'It's been nice, fellas, But I'm not that smart I happen to think I can win a few more majors." So will the Golden Bear play two more years? Five more? Play on the PGA Seniors Tour? "I just don't know," he said. "My crystal ball is a little cloudy." Nicklaus also has some special memories of Winged Foot. He was 20 when he got married, and he and wife, Barbara, visited the course on their honeymoon. "It was pouring down rain and Barbara was out with me," he recalled.

"We were the only two people on the course. "I was here because I wanted to be here, but she should have had better sense. Now, she has." The absence of Arnold Palmer from the Open drew a lot of discussion. Palmer, who was not exempt under any of the performance standards, did not receive a special exemption from the U.S. Golf Association and failed by two shots in sectional qualifying.

The USGA has up to three special exemptions to give each year. This year, it used only two, inviting Lee Trevino and Isao Aoki. Palmer, who had played in 31 successive Opens, was given exemptions four of the last six years. "There's nobody we in the USGA would rather have had here than Arnold Palmer," said USGA President Jim Hand. "But he hasn't played as well as he would have liked and, consequently, he didn't make it.

"The Open championship is what the name implies. It is open to players all over the country who can make it here. It was the decision of the championship committee that Arnold had already received four exemptions and that was due recognition for his contributions over the years." Opinion of the golfers varied. Nicklaus sidestepped the question. Ben Crenshaw said he thought Palmer had wanted to qualify on his own.

Watson, however, did not straddle the fence. "I think it's wrong that he's not here," said Watson. "The USGA had exemptions to give and they should have given him one. Arnold has been an integral part of the game. "I understand the USGA logic.

The tournament is named But they gave two (exemptions) this year and should have given three." if Tom Watson recalls 1974 failure Prices Effective thru June 23, 1984 i ani Steve Kelley Golf MAMARONECK, N.Y. Winged 'Foot Golf Club is a place with a colorful name and a backbreaking 'course. It was named for Mercury, the mythical figure blessed with fleetness and grace. The club's original 'membership was derived from the New York Athletic Club, whose building has a winged-foot symbol in the floor of the u- There are 36 holes at Winged Foot. The famed West Course, where the tournaments are played, was designed I by A.W.

Tillinghast and opened in 1923. Club members instructed the to give them "a man-sized tourse." They got one. i In the history of major "championships at Winged Foot including three U.S. Opens nobody has broken par for 72 holes. Winged Foot boasts a colorful The Mohegan tribe ruled the territory in another age.

He lived in the Mamaroneck region in the 1820s and wrote of the area in "The Last of the Mohicans." 0 The region was occupied by 'American, British and French troops fortunes shifted during the Revolutionary War. Construction 1 workers found stone arrowheads and and German coins as they the courses out of the "countryside.

Later, there was a settlement near the present -club site. Club records indicate that 24,000 'iubic yards of dirt were moved to Build the greens and 7,800 trees were Removed. Nobody kept track, however, of how many golfers' egos I have been damaged by Winged Foot's 'demanding nature. I -it it ir On the surface, the 1974 U.S. Open Winged Foot would appear to have been a disaster for Tom Watson.

Then a youngster from Kansas City without -a professional victory, Watson led 'Hale Irwin by one shot after three rounds, but shot 79 the last day and tied for fifth. But the metamorphis began for Watson on that disappointing Sunday. "Byron Nelson came up and talked to me in the locker room," Watson recalled. "He said he liked the way I Tine AMERICA PERFORMANCEsTIRES OUR SPECIALTY! legend, unsolicited." It was two years before Watson took Nelson up on the offer. The next year, 1977, the youngster from Kansas City beat Jack Nicklaus in stretch duels in the Masters and British Open and became recognized as the world's best player.

As for the awful last round here in 1974, Watson said the memory has served as a motivating factor for him in this U.S. Open. Before the 84th Open began, he tried to analyze what happened that day. "You have the lead and don't win it," he said. "You shoot a bad round.

Why did that occur? "Well, I wasn't good enough to handle it. I just didn play well enough. The pressure exaggerates your mistakes. "Usually, you see it in the NBA playoffs and World Series. Most Super Bowls haven't been very good games because everyone's under intense pressure.

There's a lot to be said about being loose and trying to handle the load of the pressure. "It was early in my career and I hadn't won any tournaments. Being in position to win, I didn't handle it. learned how to handle it. It's a gradual buildup, kind of like a timepiece with sand running through it.

Eventually, you get there. Watson would throw away several more leads before he learned to control his swing in pressure situations. Now, he is considered one of golf's best stretch players. "You have to be patient," he said. "You think faster, you do everything faster with that extra adrenalin in your body.

You have to pace yourself. "Physically, to deal with pressure, I try to breathe deeper, try to make decisions slower and try to be patient when I get too fast. As for his return to Winged Foot, Watson had one thought. "I'd certainly like to be in the same position I was in in 1974 and have the opportunity to win it," he said. "I think I could fare better." it 6 Jack Nicklaus, at age 44, is still stalking golf's major championships.

He still can play superbly, as evidenced by his Memorial Tournament victory last month. But during interviews, the subject of his eventual retirement invariably arises. mat topic was addressed again regional marketing areas. Regional tournaments were held this year in Wichita, Beach, Leominster, Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, Davenport, Iowa; Detroit, Baltimore and St. Louis.

The national championships will be played in the Breckenridge Concourse's ballroom, beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. The public is invited and there will be no admission charge.
