"I'd get an or two, and then I'd come out in and wouldn't play for a couple at bat of days. I pressed, knowing that if didn't get a hit or two, I'd be back on the bench. "I just decided to try to relax and try to get confidence.

I'm comfortable at the plate, and I'm of in a groove." Van Slyke said he had been as perplexed as anyone as to why the Cardinals have been staggering. "I don't know if it's an attitude problem, a pitching problem or a hitting problem," he said. "I don't know the answers. That's why I play and I don't manage. As a player, part of my job is to help change that attitude." Second baseman Tom Herr reiterated Sunday that he thought some of the players hadn't taken losing seriously enough or at least didn't appreciate what it took to be a world champion, as the Cardinals used to be.

"Losing is OK. You've got to expect to lose your share of games, even onethird of them," he said. "There's a lot of truth to the theory that you don't let things affect you. You try to stay on an even keel, not get too high when you win and not too low when you lose. "But to lose the way we've been losing that's the thing that was discouraging to me.

Maybe I'm wrong. I haven't got the potential to get inside en people's heads to see if they're as upset as I was." Herr said Sunday's game "is an. indication of what our lineup is capable of doing." Then he entered a note of caution, pending the development of a more consistent pattern. "Of course, everybody has big days," he said. The battle was not lost on Herzog.

"This is the first nine-inning game I ever saw where I shaved before the game and I have to shave after," he said. Hit Parade CARDINALS (12) ATLANTA (9) abr bi abr bi L. Louis for "evaluation" by doctors. "He might be back next week, we don't know," said Manager Whitey Herzog, who said the only thing he had heard was that Green had not been in touch with his 18-year-old brother, who was living with Green in St. Louis. Green's brother, who speaks little or no English, had been in contact with pitcher Joaquin Andujar, Green's closest friend on the team, wondering where his brother was. Andujar, who talked with Herzog and General Manager Joe McDonald before Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves, apparently will try to reach Green wherever the first baseman is being treated in St.

LOUIS POST- DISPATCH May 28, 1984 90; Co-op Approach Combines Education And Experience By Dale Singer Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Colleges are trying to help their graduates solve a perpetual problem: If you can't get a job without experience, how can you get experience without a job? Their answer is cooperative education, in which companies and schools work together to give students real-world training in the field that they plan to enter. Students can either go to school and work at the same time or alternate work with classes, a semester at a time. The St.

Louis area has a poor reputation for co-op education, compared to other parts of the country, says Robert W. Olmen of Greenville, chairman of the Cooperative Education Council. He and his colleagues are trying to spread the word to gain more acceptance for the concept. "Lots of companies feel that colleges aren't training their students right," he said in an interview Thursday. "This gives companies an opportunity to interact directly with students." Companies who use co-op students are under no obligation to hire them after graduation.

Most students involved in cooperative education are in fields such as business, computer science or engineering. But even students in fields such as sociology, psychology or art have benefitted from the combination of practical experience and academic training that co-op work provides. Brenda Reed, a recent graduate of Maryville College, works full time as an analyst in the personnel department of Citicorp Acceptance, where she worked as a co-op student. Ms. Reed worked as a secretary for 10 years between high school and college, and she had a better idea than most students what the corporate world was like.

Even so, she said, the co-op experience was a good one. "It not only gave the company a chance to look at me," she said, "but it gave me a chance to look at the company, to see if we were a good match. It turned out it was." Michael S. Barzoff, co-op coordinator for management information systems at Monsanto tells prospective co-op students that they would benefit in three ways: They would be more marketable after graduation, their course work would become more relevant: and they would have a better basis for deciding on a job. Employers are expected to keep track of a student's progress, he said. Some schools give academic credit for the time spent on the job, and students are paid for the time they work. Becky Mann, an assistant professor of management at Maryville College, said the relationship between academic work real work was particularly helpful. "Co-op students understand better the concepts we present in class because they recognize how they have used them at work," she said. funeral -IndexAleto, Jack Amsden, Lillian G.
