But imagine the football team that would develop if the two high schools merged. Websterwood Kirkwood Groves.

With some getting used to, it could have a sweet ring, and a team to match. The schools, with a combined record of 20-5 this season, each landed four players on the 1983 Post-Dispatch South All-District team. The choices included two of the area's top running backs, one of the area's best kickers, a hard-charging young defensive end and an equally talented defensive backwide receiver. Here's a look at the team: BRAD CONWAY, St. James, receiver Played both ways the last two seasons.

Conway reads defenses well. Excellent agility, intelligence and soft hands make up for average' speed. He caught 57 passes for 666 yards and 10 TDs, and dropped only two passes all season. On defense, he grabbed two interceptions. MIKE BUTLER, Parkway West, receiver A two-year starter, Butler caught 19 passes for 417 yards playing tight end.

He's an excellent blocker with soft hands. He also was one of the team's steadiest defensive players, at strong safety. ED STOWE, Union, receiver An excellent blocker at tight end, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior grabbed 28 passes for 46! yards. He also started at defensive end but is probably a better prospect at tight end. Stowe is reported to run the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds.

MIKE PLOESSER, Vianney, offensive tackle One of the school's best offensive linemen and it has bad some good ones. Ploesser was an excellent one-on-one blocker and led the way on 90 percent of his team's running plays. He played defensive tackle at times and has better-than-average speed. AARON FORD, Maplewood, offensive tackle The 6-3, 275-pounder runs the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds. An excellent wrestler, he's a four-year starter who played both offense and nose guard.

"He's a dandy," said Coach Jack Taylor, who pulled him to lead sweep plays. He was all-conference on both offense and defense. LEMONTE EDWARDS, Webster Groves, offensive guard A strong leader, Edwards switched to guard from linebacker this season and led many of Webster's running plays for Keith Jones. A smart player who called many of his team's blocking schemes, he has 4.8 speed. CHRIS TAYLOR, Maplewood, offensive guard The only player on the South team selected to both offensive and defensive squads.

Taylor also was picked at linebacker. He recorded a team-leading 94 tackles. "He pretty well covered the field, didn't get off it too much," said Coach Taylor. DAMON SCHILDKNECHT, Sullivan, center A three-year starter at center, Schildknecht also was a two-year starter at linebacker. Was No.

2 on his team in tackles. Needs to improve slightly on long snaps to be a excellent small-college player. SCOTT SAUNDERS, Parkway West, quarterback Goes by the nickname "Smiley." Actually, he didn't have much to smile about this season. Saunders spent most of the season nursing an ankle injury, which hampered his sprint-out passrunning game. He hit on 66 of 141 passes for 939 yards and ran for about 200.

KEITH JONES, Webster Groves, running back Coach Jack Jones no relation liked to call him the "John Riggins" of area high school ball. A three-year starter as both a quarterback (as a sophomore and junior) and running back, Jones piled up 1,507 yards (6.9 average) and scored 20 TDs in 1983. With 4.7 speed, he's part enforcer, part sprinter. "He's the most physical runner we've ever had," said Coach Jones. JEFF CAIN, Hillsboro, running back A two-year starter at running back and safety, Cain rushed for 1,732 yards on 241 attempts.

He scored a school-record 18 touchdowns and was the No. 2 tackier on the team. He also punted and returned kicks. "He was on the field all the time, which takes some kid these days," said Coach Bob Droege. RICHARD JAMES, Kirkwood, running back James has 4.6 speed, accumulated 1,329 yards in 226 attempts and helped Kirkwood to the Class 5A semifinals.

He broke several kickoffs for touchdowns. James also is remembered as the guy who placed third in the long jump in the state meet last spring, when Kirkwood won the state title. MICHAEL EASON, Webster Groves, defensive end One of eight juniors on the Statesmen defense, Eason sacked quarterbacks 19 times this season, in part because of his 4.6 speed. "We've never had a defensive end with this kind of quickness," said Coach Jones. JOHN GAMACHE, Lindbergh, defensive end A three-year starter at the spot, the 6-3, 230-pound senior had 13 sacks.

"He was really engrossed in the game when he was on the field," said Coach Stan Mach. Gamache, who has 4.9 speed, caught 24 passes for 271 yards as a tight end. His teammates nicknamed him "Moose." JIM McEWEN, Union, defensive tackle McEwen, 5-11, 215, can bench press almost 400 pounds. A hard-nosed player who doubled at offensive tackle, McEwen has 4.8 speed. "He was on all of our teams; we couldn't get him off the field," said Coach Del Rinne.

McEwen also started at offensive tackle. BYRON DeLEAR, Principla, defensive tackle Also a starter at offensive guard, DeLear (6-6, 240) overpowered most of his opponents. He's so mobile that Coach Brian Morse considered making him a tight end. TIM FEARS, Hillsboro, linebacker A three-year starter on defense and a two-year starter at several offensive spots, Fears led his team with 100 tackles. He played almost every minute of every game and called signals for the defense.

He played tight end and fullback, but his spot in college will be on defense. PAUL TYLER, Kirkwood, linebacker He was the "enforcer" for a team that reached the Class 5A semifinals and finished 10-3. Tyler used his 4.8 speed to rack up 92 tackles. "When he put on the blitz, there was no stopping him," said Coach Dale Collier. TIM CAHILL, Union, linebacker Though he rushed for 1,607 yards as a running back (5.8 yards per carry), his spot in college is probably on defense.

A three-year starter at linebacker. He was No. 3 on his team in tackles and also punted at times. CALVERT COLE, Kirkwood, defensive back Also played offense. "He was the kid that kept us together," said Coach Collier.

Cole used his 4.6 speed to grab seven pass Interceptions. As a flanker, he caught 17 passes for 303 yards. He also returned punts at times. A three-sport athlete, he probably will play cornerback in college. TONY LaVALLE, Sullivan, defensive back An all-purpose player with 4.7 speed.

"He hit so hard on defense, he had our receivers scared to run near him in practice," said Coach Ron Belew. LaValle rushed for 831 yards and caught 19 passes for 479 yards 25.2 yards a catch. LaValle, 5-11, 165, also returned kicks and punts. KEITH SAYLOR, Webster Groves, defensive back Even though Saylor stands only 5-6 and weighs only 145 pounds, Coach Jones described him as a fierce tackier. A two-year starter, he had five interceptions.

"He moved here from Texas, where his uncle is a football coach," said Jones. "He brought with him a lot of smarts about football and a nice attitude." DAN GUIRL, Kirkwood, kicker -Stronger than he was last season, he hit on 29 of 31 extra-point attempts and connected on seven field-goal attempts, including kicks of 42 and 44 yards. SCOTT CEPICKY, Vianney, punter "In the years I've been coaching, he might be the best all-around athlete I've ever had," said Coach Don Heeb. Cepicky averaged 43.9 yards on 42 punts. After being an all-conference tight end last season, he shifted to quarterback in 1983.

He rushed for 323 yards and passed for 468, kicked and played part-time at defensive Heeb compares Cepicky with Gus Otto, whom Heeb coached as an assistant at McBride High.
