In Search Of A Win CHICAGO (AP) The Oakland Invaders, already co-owners of the United States Football League mark with 10 consecutive regular-season losses, will be looking for revenge Sunday when they meet the Chicago Blitz the team that started the skid. "If we want to have any chance against Chicago, we have to eliminate those mistakes," said Oakland Coach Chuck Hutchinson.

"Chicago's playing good footbalj right now and we're not. We just have to concentrate a little more this week." The Invaders come into Soldier Field with an 0-9 record after losing 31-17 to Washington last week in a battle of the winless. The Blitz are at 3-6 having won three of their last four after pounding Los Angeles, 49-29. Chicago forced four Express fumbles and converted them into 28 points en route to the victory and a club record for points scored in a game. Vince Evans ran for two scores to widen his lead over USFL passers in the touchdown tally to eight.

"That game should be a confidence builder," said Blitz Coach Marv Levy. Evans will need some confidence to throw into the Oakland secondary, where strong safety Marcus Quinn already has intercepted seven balls to tie Birmingham's Chuck Clanton for the league leadership. "Those things are nice, but this is a team game," said Quinn, a second-year player from Louisiana State. "I'd much rather see the team doing better." DENVER (AP) The fiirmingham Stallions, who boast an 8-1 record heading into Sunday's United States Football League game at Denver, are being touted as the league's best team. But Coach Rollie Dotsch is leary of such designations.

"I think we're one of the five, or six best teams in the league right now," says Dotsch, "along with Denver, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Philadelphia and New Jersey. But I wouldn't say we're THE best. People may be saying that because we lost our opener and then have won eight straight games. We're on a roll now." Although it is fashionable to praise the upcoming opponent, Denver Coach Craig Morton seems genuinely impressed by the Stallions. "Birmingham is by far our biggest test of the year so far," he said.

"I think they're the elite of the league right now. This is our opportunity to knock off a giant. "It's an exceptionally good team, and one thing that impresses me is the defenses they use. They play some defenses that I've seen only a few times in my (18-year National Football League playing) career." Denver, the surprise team of the USFL at the halfway point of the season, brings a 7-2 record into the game. The Gold's winning streak ended at five games when it fell to New Orleans, 20-18, last Sunday.

Against the Breakers, the Gold lost its starting quarterback to a knee injury for the second straight week. Craig Penrose went down with a ligament tear in his left knee on April 14 and underwent arthroscopic surgery. Bob Gagliano, Penrose's replacement, suffered torn cartilage in his right knee last week and also had surgery. The Gold faced the prospect of playing Birmingham with quarterback Fred Mortensen, who was out of football until signing with Denver just after Penrose's injury. But Penrose, miraculously, has recuperated and will start Sunday, wearing a brace on the knee.

Four other Gold players, including punter Steve Gortz and offensive tackle Harold Norfleet, will not play, however. The Stallions rank fourth in the league in offense and third in defense, and they're first in takeaway-giveaway ratio at plus-1 2. Cliff Stoudt, the former Pittsburgh Steeler, has completed 52 percent of his passes for 1,386 yards and' 12 touchdowns, with just three interceptions. He fired five touchdown passes as the Stallions beat Oklahoma 41-17 last week. Joe Cribbs, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, is the league's top rusher with 938 yards on 189 carries.

"Cribbs and Stoudt have been very instrumental in where we are," says Dotsch. Denver's offense ranks only 15th in the 18-team league and the defense is 1 1th, but the Gold usually has found a way to win.
