He retired in 1960.

In 1930, Mr. Hill became principal of Benton Elementary School. He also, was principal of Baden School and Patrick Henry School and an assistant principal at Central High School. All the schools are in St. Louis.

Special to the Post-Dispatch MOSCOW, Idaho Stanley Hill, a retired principal of Roosevelt High School in St Louis, died Thursday at a retirement home in Moscow. He was Mr. Hill began teaching and coaching in 1917 at Smith Academy, a preparatory school for Washington University in St Louis. Later, be Sir Anton Dolin, 79; Founded Ballet Companies TORGAU, East Germany (AP) In a gesture of American friendship toward the Soviet Union, an American veteran was buried Saturday as be had wished in an East German town where he and other VS. soldiers met their advancing Soviet allies 38 years ago and cut Germany in two.

Among the mourners for Joe Polowsky, 66, was a contingent of Soviet soldiers from a nearby barracks and American officers from a U.S. military mission in Potsdam, East Germany. Polowsky was a taxi driver from Chicago. Shortly before he died of cancer last month, he wrote a letter telling relatives that he wanted to be buried at Torgau, East Germany. "Joe Polowsky being buried at Torgau on the Elbe River cannot but have a comforting, creative, positive effect upon events," he wrote in his letter.

Polowsky was one of the American soldiers who met the Soviet army at Torgau, on the banks of the Elbe, on April 25, 1945. The joining of the Western and Soviet armies sealed the fate of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. Twelve days later, Hitler was dead and the Germans surrendered. Polowsky was buried about a mile from where the troops had met Two American and two Soviet soldiers who were part of the linkup in Torgau wheeled the cart bearing Polowsky's coffin, draped with an American flag. to the grave.

The only relative to attend the burial was Polowsky's son, Ted, 23. Col. Roland Lajoie from the VS. mission at Potsdam handed Ted Polowsky the flag that had covered his father's coffin. The Soviet and American officers saluted, and Polowsky's son wept In addition to U.S.

officers from the Potsdam mission and soldiers from a Soviet barracks in Torgau, about 200 East Germans from the area came to the burial. Two U.S. Marines stationed In West Berlin followed the pallbearers. After a riverside ceremony after the burial, Polowsky's son quoted Christ's admonishment to "love one another, as God has loved you." "I pray that both nations will not pick up swords anymore, but learn to live in peace with each other and with all nations of the world," the young man said. In the letter describing his funeral wishes, Joe Polowsky said his burial at Torgau would symbolize "one of the few remaining ties" between the United States and the Soviet Union.

"My view is that my (burial) ground at Torgau was paid for with the spilling of the blood of the soldiers of the World War II Allies of East and West" Polowsky wrote. In 1955, Polowsky led a delegation of U.S. veterans to Moscow and to Washington to plea for an end to the arms race. An old friend of Polowsky, the Rev. William Sloane Coffin of the Riverside Church in New York, said a prayer at the burial.

The pallbearers were Charles Forrester of Greer, S.C., and William Beswick of West Point Va. The Soviet veterans were two retired officers, Maj. Gen. Alexel Gorlinskl and Col. Ivan Samchuk.

Gorlinski said at the ceremony that he wanted to renew the pledge by American and Soviet soldiers. He recalled that they had promised at Torgau "to dedicate their lives to furthering friendship between the people of the United States and of the Soviet Union so that wars would never happen again." Gorlinski's dark civilian suit was decorated with military medals. He said his countrymen felt "great sadness" at Polowsky's death. The official Soviet news agency, Tass, said the Soviet and U.S. war veterans had agreed to a statement stressing the need to end the nuclear arms race and improve relations between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Among the American civilians who attended was Millie Peters, 67, of Lawrence, Kan. At a small monument that marks the troop linkup, she read a pledge "to work for a world at peace and free from the threat of nuclear war." scene. In 1939, Sir Anton became a charter member of Ballet Theater, now the American Ballet Theater. Later he choreographed a modern counterpart for male dancers in his vrtuoso showpiece "Variations for Four."
