Guitarist Kevin Carlson, who also contributed some nifty effects with a talk box, kept pace with Nova all the way, as did band members Dave Sikes (bass), Billy Carmassi (drums) and Tom Zvonchek (keyboards). Headlining the concert was Cheap Trick, one of the most unconventional rock acts around.

Even after seven years, the group defies description. Rick Nielsen's imaginative lyrics, guitar lunacy and onstage antics combined with Robin Zander's Beatlesque vocals and matinee-idol looks are just half the story. Keeping the beat with bassist Jon Brant is one of the world's most unlikely looking rockers, drummer Bun E. Carlos. Together they drove the Opera House crowd to its feet with best known originals "Surrender," "If You Want My Love" and "She's Tight," as well as classic covers "Day Tripper" and "Ain't That A Shame." Although Nielsen created some memorable licks on his never-ending parade of unusual guitars, his role as master of ceremonies, cheerleader and all-around comic consumed most of his time.

Meanwhile, the young girls continued to scream over Zander, and not always for his romantic and raspy singing-style. Sometimes all he had to do was fall to his knees, as he did during "Next Position Please," the title cut off the group's current album. There seemed to be something for everyone in Sunday's concert. With three diverse acts on the bill, no one should have come away disappointed. RIRKWOOO War Game, 7:10, 920.

I work with a rude (nicey-nice) girl who is a troublemaker and is trying to cause me to lose my job. I am working under much stress from this and would like to now the best possible way to handle it. JUST A WORKER INASMUCH AS the situation is causing you enough stress that it interferes with the amount andor rate of your business activity, you can and probably should speak to your supervisor about it. If your company has a personnel officer who routinely counsels employees on problems, including interoffice relations, make an appointment with himher as well. The sooner you do it, the better, because you will have an official procedure to handle problem situations.

Sometimes, no matter how one tries, it is simply impossible to solve a problem alone. Sharing it with someone who is a position to help you solve it makes the anxiety easier to handle because you are no longer suffering by yourself. DEAR MARTHA: A couple of months ago, you had in your column the name and address of a company which sold shoes to people with a size different in the feet. There is a whole size difference between my two feet. It is awful expensive having to buy two pair of shoes just to get one pair to fit.

Would you be so kind as to print BARGAIN MATINEES-EVERYDAY ALL SHOWINGS BEFORE 6PM 'All TH! RIGHT MOVM" (THANKSGIVING PY 1 ,303,305.307 30-9 30 "A MIGHT IN HEAVEN" (THANKSGIVING DAY) i ft. P.itr. "FfYOR-HERE DAY! "BRAINSTORM" 5,307,309 30 DAY) 1.30-3 By Louise King Kiel Opera House rocked with the sound of Cheap Trick, Aldo Nova and Danny Spanos on Sunday night in a concert featuring powerful vocals and slashing guitars as well as a healthy dose of wry humor. Excitement was added to the evening by the excellent acoustics and by the fact that the show was being recorded live for the RKO Radio Network. Spanos is a native of Michigan and a former drummer who first went solo in 1980.

He opened the concert with a brief series of tunes, including the title cut off his latest release, titled "Passion In The Dark." His gutsy voice is a cross between that of Bryan Adams and John "Cougar" Mellencamp, and it serves him well especially on the melodic "Cherie," which drew a standing ovation to end the set. Since the recording of his latest release, Spanos has linked up with a group formerly known as Modern Design. Spanos and his new band which includes bassist Dana Strum, guitarist Ron Mancuso, keyboardist Ross Bolton and drummer Joe DePompies have been together for only nine weeks. Yet onstage they appear to be a cohesive and energetic unit, with enough raw talent among them to go all the way to the top. Second on the bill and making his first appearance in the Gateway City was Canadian-born Aldo Nova, who caught the attention of ax-lovers everywhere with the razor-sharp riffs of "Fantasy," from his 1981 debut album.

True to his calling, Nova delivered Handyman By Al Carrell A SUPER just had need for some glazier's compound and knew that there were two cans left over from some previous windowpane replacement. Both, however, turned out to be dried up even though the lid was on. Then I remembered an old tip someone suggested. It was a way to preserve this stuff after once opening the can. It involves covering over the top with water, which won't allow air to get into the compound, even if the lid isn't on tight enough.

I recalled that I had wondered about the water rusting the can and had transferred the compound to a glass jar before putting in the water. I scrounged around and found the jar with a piece of tape and the date written. It had been put away June 2, 1980. 1 opened the jar and poured off the water, and the glazing compound was just like new. There's one that really works and for a long time, too.

The service was started by Ruth Feldman, a women here in St. Louis many years ago.

She moved Iowa, but still maintains her records and adds new names as the register with her. For more information, write to the National Odd Shoe Exchange, Rural Route 4, Indianola, Iowa 50125. Not too long ago, the Post-Dispatch consumer magazine, DOLLARS AND SENSE, printed the names of two local stores that will sell paire of shoes in different sizes. They are Lou's Shoes, Yorkshire Plaza at Laclede Station and and Watson Roads, and Trautwein's Shoes, 5227 Gravois Avenue. DEAR MARTHA: I wonder if you would know of any choir or group that is looking for members to sing Christmas song.

Since you seem to have access to this type of information, I would appreciate any pertinent information. Thank vou- H.B. YOU CAN GET the information you want by calling the Christmas Carol Association of St. Louis at 863-1225. You might also want to inquire at your neighborhood churches and community center.

Use a hand-held hair dryer to dry out the wood. It will do the job. Then while the wood is dry, seal the edges that are not painted, and you'll prevent this from happening again. Paint or shellac will do. S.J.
