evening 7:30 m. Visitation 3-5 4 7-9 p.m. From page one brother had been arrested in Walden. Colo. Authorities in Jackson County, said Chuck Walker had waived extradition.

Authorities from St. Clair County went to Colorado on Saturday to pick him up and return him to Belleville. "For the first time in a month, I know I can get a decent night's sleep," Doug Walker said in an interview Friday, a few hours after his brother's arrest. "1 don't have to worry about whether he's around here and knowing he might come back." I it it J- The victims were Kevin Paule, 21, and Sharon Winker, 25, who had planned to be married next summer. They had gone fishing that Saturday and never returned home.

The following Miss Winker's mother found Paule's body and, fearing that her daughter was also dead, notified autorities. The victims hud been bound and shot through the head. Their bodies were tied to separate trees in a wooded area near the Illinois Route 177 bridge across Silver Creek. Doug Walker and his family were shocked to hear the news. Paule used to live down the street from them in Lenzburg.

He went to Marissa High School with Walker's son, Edward, 19, and was liked by the whole family. I' "When he was in grade school, he was the class clown," Edward recalls, fin high school, he was the leader of his group. Everybody liked him I don't know anybody who didn't." Doug Walker concurred. "He was a Very likeable kid," he said. "I wanted go to the funeral we were friends of the family, you see.

But I couldn't you understand." Ka paused and looked down the street. "Some day, I want to pay a visit to the Paule family." Doug Walker said he cannot remember his brother ever meeting Paule. As far as he knows, they were strangers. it it it The paths of the Walker brothers split a long time ago long before the killings at Silver Creek, and years their own father was fatally shot in O'Fallon in 1961. "We just don't have anything in common we haven't for many 'years," Doug Walker said.

"He had his way, and I didn't go his way. I went my own way I was interested in my wife, my kids and my neighbors." The past month has taken its toll on Doug Walker, 41. His hands trembled a little as he lit a cigarette he said he needed a smoke, despite problems with his lungs and watched his grandchildren play in the front yard. "My brother's been looking for trouble for twenty years," Doug Walker "You've heard that saying, 'He's an accident waiting for something to happen. Well, my brother was trouble waiting for something or somebody to accommodate him." Chuck Walker, 43, "was always a kind of mischievous kid," his brother says.

"But he always did well in school. Even when he was in prison, he took courses. He got his high school equivalency and took college courses." The Walker boys spent their early years in O'Fallon. They were reared by their mother, who is still living, and their stepfather. Their father was killed on Labor Day 1961, Doug Walker says.

He says he is still bitter that the man who was convicted of killing his father served only about two years in prison before being released. Chuck Walker was about 15 when he first got into trouble with the law, in Florida, his brother said. "He just seemed to be in and out of trouble ever since then." Authorities say Chuck Walker has served at least two prison terms. In 1965, he was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty of burglarizing a building in East St. Louis.

In 1977, he was sentenced to six to 10 years in prison for an armed robbery in St. Clair County. While in prison, Chuck Walker used to write to "lonely hearts clubs" to introduce himself to women, his brother said. "Women would write him back, and several women sent him TVs and radios. One woman even sent him the money to fly out to Colorado when he got out of prison." A few years ago, Chuck Walker married a woman from Belleville and moved with her to Washington state.

But they parted after a few months, Doug Walker said. Chuck Walker was released from prison about two years ago and got a job as a janitor at Scott Air Force Base. He lived for a while with a girlfriend in Fayetteville, but reportedly broke up with her in early June. The last time Doug Walker saw his older brother was June 14 four days before the killings at Silver Creek. "He just came down and sat here on the picnic table and told me he wanted to say goodbye," Doug said.

"He said he was leaving this part of the country, and he'd never be back again. That was the last I saw of him." Asked whether he plans to attend the trial of his brother, Doug Walker just stares down the road. "One of the reasons I left the Belleville area was to escape from my brother's reputation," he said. "We came down here and said we were going to start out fresh. And now this happens." He put out his cigarette.

"If my brother did this thing, then I for one think he should be punished, because I don't believe anybody on God's green earth should have done something like that." It ruled in December 1980 that McCurry could not file a civil-rights suit against the police tactics in federal court if the tactics had been condoned in his criminal trial in state court. A federal judge has dismissed the suit of Willie McCurry, a St. Louisan who has accused nine police officers of him and illegally searching his Jwuse. Senior U.S.
