ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 8W West May 26, 1983 Summer Homes Sought In Area For Foreign Exchange Students iff Aug. 27. German students will visit from July IS through Aug. 12 or from July 30 to Aug.

27. Dates for Italian and Spanish students are arranged during the application process. For a brochure and application, those interested should contact Takacs or his wife, Lina, at 2567 Saratoga Drive, Waterloo, Iowa 50702. For information locally, those interested may call Doreen Adalmann, 432-1289. Besides placing foreign students, Nacel sponsors a variety of exchange programs.

Takacs said he was seeking foreign language teachers to chaperone students going abroad. The trips promise a good opportunity for a teacher to "brush up" on his or her skills, Takacs said. Nacel also sends American students abroad during the summer. Information on that program is available by contacting Takacs. "Every two years, we have a charter flight for the American host families to be the guests of the families of the foreign students," Takacs said.

Host families can be of all ages and all economic backgrounds. The host family must provide a separate bed for the student guest, but need not provide a separate bedroom, Takacs said. Host families can choose whether to invite a boy or girl. The families also may choose the age of the student and which time period the student will be their guest. "Every year we have difficulty placing boys because most (families) who respond ask for girls," he said.

"So we have a special need for boys." Students and families are matched according to their interests, Takacs said. The program intends that the student be received as a member of the family not a guest and share in the joys and responsibilities of family life. French students will visit from July 2 through 30 or from July 30 through A student exchange program is in desperate need of summer homes for high school students from Italy, France, Germany and Spain, says Imre Takacs, area coordinator of the program. The program is sponsored by Nacel Cultural Exchanges, a nonprofit organization that is 25 years old. Host families would provide room and board for the students for four weeks during July or August.

Another program is available for students to visit for a school year. Families need not know the language of the student they host, Takacs said. The visiting students will have had at least two years of instruction in English. Besides learning about the student's country, host families also are likely to be invited to go to the student's country for a visit. Eighty percent of the American families who have a visiting student are invited to the home of the student's family, Takacs said.

Safety Seats Are Promoted For Infants More than a dozen Infants, strapped Into car seats, were lined up on a conference table In the St. Louis County Government Center Monday to promote the use of safety restraints. "I'm glad they're yours," said County Executive Gene McNary, who had to raise his voice to be heard above the cries and babble. "I went through this a number of years ago and believe everybody should have their turn," McNary said. McNary declared the week of May 23 as Loan-a-Seat for Safety Week In the county and presented a proclamation to that effect to R.

Norris Orms of the Safety Council of Greater St. Louis. The babies created quite a stir id the usually sedate atmosphere of McNary's offices on the ninth floor of the government center. Crowded into the room with the babies were their nervous parents, curious secretaries, photographers, reporters and television crews. Most of the infants handled themselves well; a few even mananged to sleep through the ceremony.

One behaved admirably when he was let loose from his car seat and held aloft to pose with McNary. The Safety Council is sponsoring a car seat program throughout the area, and will provide 10 safety seats to organizations that want to participate. Orms said a number of corporations had started their own programs. The Safety Council is supporting legislation now pending in the Missouri Senate that would require parents to use car seats or seat belts for children under the age of 4. The bill has been approved by the House and a Senate committee.

Rock Hill To Disclose Choice For Police Chief municipality. "The matter is confidential until the board meets in executive session June 7 to discuss the job further with the candidate who was selected," Stroup said. "If everything goes smoothly then at that point, we will make a public announcement." The city has been without a permanent police chief since October The Rock Hill Board of Alderman plans to announce its choice for the city's new police chief at its June 7 meeting, says Mayor Jesse Stroup. The board met last Thursday in a closed session and unanimously agreed on one of the 10 finalists for the job. But the mayor refused to name that person and only said that he is currently working as a police chief in another when Chief James Johnstone retired.

Since then, Capt. Mark Zimmer1 has been acting as police chief. Originally when the city started looking for Johnstone's replacement, 68 candidates applied for the job. A police committee evaluate those 68 candidates and selected five to be interviewed by a citizens' committee. The committee recommended Zimmer for the post but the Board of Alderman voted 4-2 against the proposal.

"It's hard to say why the board rejected him," said Stroup. "Several felt he was prime. He's a real gentleman's gentleman and there aren't that many police chiefs like that around." Several citizens also supported Zimmer as the candidate to fill the police chief position. Zimmer declined to comment on the situation. Job Applications For Park Program led DarganPost-Dispatch St.
