4D Sports ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH May 12, 1983 They'll Chase Another Holland In 2 A Track Meet five team titles. In that time they had a major part in 280 of the 350 team points Monroe City scored. Individually, the six brothers accounted for 17 first places, eight seconds, nine thirds, three fourths, two fifths and two sixths. Jeff Holland, who graduated in 1981, is the family leader with 15 medals nd six first places.

David, who graduated in 1978, had nine medals and five firsts. Danny, who graduated in 1982, had 10 medals and six firsts. It is possible that the spotlight this year could shift to someone like Crystal City distance runner Greg Reecht, who is going after his second straight state crown in the 3,200. Reecht's teammate, Andy Glasgow, who placed fourth in the 800 a year ago, clocked the state's fastest time in the event in the district qualifying competition last week (1 minute 59.5 seconds). Besides Reecht and Glasgow, the other area runner who led the state in Amy DeGonia (shotlong jump) and hurdler Peggy McFarland.

Four girls McFarland, Kathy Meyer, Laura Brown and Debbie Allen will run on three different relay teams. Because of the numbers at Burroughs, it is customary that a few are called upon to shoulder most of the load, spreading their talents around. This year the heart of the team will be Bakken, a junior, Laura Gartland, a sophomore, Keefer, a senior, and Beth Dunaway, a freshman. Bakken and Gartland each is running in four events, Keefer in three. Bakken's range is unusual, from the 200 to an 800 leg on the 4X800 relay team.

Once during the season, Bakken even was asked to hurdle. She questioned her coach, Skippy Keefer, about this. "Mrs. Keefer," she said, "just exactly how do I train for all these different events?" Said her coach with a sigh, "Night and day, Ellen, night and day." district qualifying was Wright City's Mark Wilding in the 1,600 The Crystal City 4X800 relay team ranked second with its time of 8:28.99 (Willow Springs was first with an Glasgow anchored the 4X800 unit that won at the state meet a year ago. Lee Cunningham also ran a leg on that team and they'll be joined by Tim Keller and Bill Quick on Saturday in a bid to repeat.

Neither Prep North nor Ritter is deep, which means each will have to rely on quality performances. If the form sheet holds up, those from the area who are within reach of a medal in the meet include sprinters Brian Small of Burroughs, Michael Willis of Wellston and Paul Keeven of Prep North; distance runner Phil Green of Ritter; hurdlers Pat Bruns of Prep North and Earl Parham of Ritter; pole vaulter Joe Ferguson" of Prep North; shot putters Chris Bequette of Crystal City and Mike Lewis of Ritter; and triple jumperlong jumper Chris Baldwin of Wright City. Bequette and Baldwin ranked second in their specialties in the district meets. Burroughs' girls shared fifth place with three teams in last year's 2A state meet. Burroughs qualified three relay teams and seven individuals this year while Crystal City qualified four relays and eight individuals.

Crystal City's 4X400 relay team led the district competition with its 4:18.1 and its 4X100 relay team tied for the lead with Van-Far with 52.6. Burroughs' 4X800 team ranked second with 10:16.8. The Bombers have won this event three of the last four years. Burroughs could score big with Nancy Keefer in the 800 and Ellen Bakken in the 200. The state's district leader in the 200 was Smithville's Sandy Cummings with a 25.2.

Bakken owns a best this season of 26.2. She was sixth in the event in the state meet last year in 26.88. Crystal City, meanwhile, is counting on Debbie Vernon (800), Crystal City and John Burroughs represent the area's strength in the 2A girls field. Monroe City won the boys 2A' championship a year ago with brothers Danny and James Holland piling up enough points between them to hold off Crystal City. The margin was thin; only three points separated the teams when the meet ended.

Danny and James have exhausted their eligibility and Darrin, a junior, does not appear that he is ready yet to take Monroe City to another title by himself. Thus, the race for the team title looks to be wide open. But when Daijin Holland this weekend is handed the baton in the two events in which he is scheduled to run, the 4X800-meter relay and the 4X400-meter relay, visions of Hollands past will bubble up. Is there no end to the story? From 1974 through last year's meet, Damn's six older brothers won 41 medals and were responsible for By Dave Dorr Of th Post-Dispatch Staff Could they hold a Missouri state high school track and field championship without the presence of the illustrious Holland family from Monroe City? The answer is they could not. It would be like Christmas without Santa, wine without roses or the Cardinals without Stan the Man.

This year it will be Darrin Holland who keeps alive what has been a stirring tradition of longevity when the Class 1A and 2A boys and girls championships are decided on the artificial track in the Lincoln University stadium at Jefferson City. Tomorrow's program begins at 1 p.m. with finals in 11 field events ana" preliminaries in running events. Saturday's program begins at 12:15 p.m. Crystal City, Prep North and Cardinal Ritter will make a definite dent in the boys 2A team race, while From Basketball To Soccer Kennon Heads Boxing Card Steve Wade High School Notebook St.

In two other eight-round bouts on the card, St. Louisan Sid "Butch" faylor will fight Burgess Scruggs of Indianapolis in a pairing of middleweights and Kenny Saale pf St. Charles will face Harold Brazier of South Bend, in a pairing of 142- pounders. Other news out of the Missouri State High School Activities Association An MSHSAA constitutional amendment has been approved by a vote of the state's schools to allow students to be absent from school for non-school activities if they obtain prior approval from the school principal. The old rule did not allow absences for non-school competition and has been criticized often over the years, including recently when some state tennis players were ruled ineligible from MSHSAA competition. Tennis, golf, swimming and gymnastics are the sports most affected by the new rule.

Athletes in those sports have traditionally had to choose between the high school program and non-school programs, such as national events held in other cities. Can a high school basketball coach from south St. Louis find happiness in North County as the principal of a rival high school? After 25 years at the only high school he's ever served, DuBourg High basketball coach Paul Frein will become the principal next fall at Aquinas High. "I see it as a normal step. I don't see it as unusual that a jock can do other things," said Frein, who said he would have stayed at DuBourg for 20 more years had it not been for the opening at Frein went to DuBourg in 1958 fresh out of St.

Louis University. In 1964, he was DuBourg's team basketball coach when the varsity, coached by the late Roger Laux and led by 7-foot Rich Niemann, won the state Class title. Frein took over when Laux, in failing health, retired after the 1976-77 season. He coached the Cavaliers to a district championship in his first season. DuBourg could be on the brink of returning to its former glories, with 10 of its varsity players to return next season.

The leading candidate to take over the team is Frein's assistant, Ray Baynes. Ball For 6 it ir Five of the area's top high school swimmers have picked schools: Edwardsville High's Bill Stapleton (University of Texas), St. Joseph's Cheri Geil (Indiana), Lindbergh's Dana Wacker and DeSmet's Tim Hacala (Louisiana State), and Edwardsville's Darcy Gregor (Kansas). A few boys basketball signings: CBC guard Paul King and Madison High forward Terry Hamilton have signed with Benedictine College. Meramec Community College's Keith Czapla has signed with Mercer University of Macon, Ga.

Czapla is a graduate of St. John's High. Girls basketball signings: Mary Delorey of Visitation has signed with Villanova University. Cleveland High's all-state forward Irenetta Henley has signed a letter of intent with Central Missouri State University. Henley averaged 21 points per game for time offer.

Vianney High soccer players Jeff Jacober and Harry Schmidt have been admitted to the United States Naval Academy. Jacober, a fullback, and Schmidt, a goalie, played on Valley's last two state championship teams. 6 -tr The St.

Louis Girls Metro Soccer Tournament will open Monday at various area sites. Because girls high school soccer is not sanctioned by the state high school activities association, the 26-team tournament is considered the "state championship." Mehlville is seeded No. 1, followed by Oakville, Lindbergh, Riverview Gardens, Hazelwood East and Hazelwood Central. Semifinal games will be played May 21, and the third-place and championship games will be May 23 all at Parkway North High. a quality American tire.

"It will be different being on the. other side I guess I have to learn some soccer," said Frein. -fr it The area's final all-star high school basketball game of the season will be May 21 at East Central College near Union.
