Galesburg, which averaged 92 points in the four tournament games, was led by Byron Thierry, with 32.

Mike Owens added 23 points, and Bill Patterson 21 for Galesburg. Freddie Towns had 26 for the Tigers (7-3). Lincoln advanced to the title game by shading Mount Carmel, 67-66, in double overtime. Towns tallied 27 points and Freddie Jones 22 for Lincoln. Carbondale Carbondale won the Class AA title, beating Champaign Centennial, 51-49.

The Class A crown went to Meridian on a 67-63 victory over Cairo. For the overall tournament title, Carbondale bombed Meridian, 65-42. Collinsville (2-7), the only local team alive on the final day, fell before Herrin, 58-51, in the consolation final. Mike Hunter had 17 points for the Kahoks. Pontiac Alton bowed to Aurora West, 59-37, in a championship semifinal on Friday, but bounced back later in the day to defeat Providence-SL Mel In the third-place game, 62-59.

Alton was down after one quarter, 17-5. Darold Randol had 23 points for Alton against St. Mel. Peoria Manual beat Aurora West, 55-44, in the championship game. If Soldan High Coach Marvin Neals believes in omens, he'll like this one.

Louis University High had of winning its fifth consecutive Meramec Holiday Festival. Stallings has huffed and puffed so far. In fact, in the early season he's been light years from being a star. But finally, with five seconds left in overtime against SLUH, he sparkled. Stallings took a pass, cut from the left side of the court to the foul line and hit an off-balance jump shot to beat SLUH, 31-29.

Victories never come easily when SLUH (6-4) and DeSmet (9-2) clash, although DeSmet already is 3-0 against the Junior Bills this season. The game was tied, 21-21, after three quarters and tied again, 29-29, when SLUH's Jim Ott hit a 15-foot shot to force the game into overtime. SLUH failed to score on either of two possessions in overtime. First came a missed shot and then SLUH's hulking 6-4 forward, Jeff Hummel, was called for charging with 46 seconds left. DeSmet took over, called time with 17 seconds left, and set the stage for Stallings.

This time, there was no stage fright. Jtevin Suiter led DeSmet with 13 points and Stallings had eight. Hummel led SLUH with 12. In 1981-82, when DeSmet went on to win the state title, the Spartans came out of the Meramec tournament with an 8-3 record. DeSmet plays host to Webster Groves on Friday.

Webster (10-1) defeated Kirkwood in the third-place game, 67-37. Sam Ivy led Webster with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Vaughn had 16 points for Kirkwood (3-5). Parkway Central (4-4) took the fifth-place game over DuBourg, 63-35, and Fox (8-2) beat Mehlville in the 'consolation final, 45-39. Mehlville slipped to 6-5 and DuBourg fell to 6-4.

In the fifth-place garni Nashvile beat O'Fallon, 45-43, and in the consolation final, Mascoutah niped Breese Central, 42-37. Scott Hesse led O'Fallon with 23 points. Elsewhere Francis Howell (5-4) lost to Lee's Summit 84-75, in the third-place game of the Patterson Division of the 16-team William Jewell tournament at Liberty. Howell was led by Mike Potthoff with 25 points. Kansas City Central won the Patterson Division, topping Raytown South, 55-48.

The Nelson Division was won by Lincoln Southeast, 55-52, over Hickman Mills. Flora defeated Newton, 44-33, for the Vandalia Tournament title. retirement, he had a daily program called "Fan In the Stands" for two years on radio station KCFM.
