He was 84. Mr. Cowles led The Minneapolis Star and The Minneapolis Tribune from the 1940s through the 1960s. His newspapers reflected his own impatient curiosity about what was going on in the nation and the world.

At a time when most newspapers relied exclusively on news agencies for information outside their immediate, areas, his maintained a highly respected Washington bureau and sent correspondents abroad to provide a depth of coverage that Mr. Cowles thought his readers needed. He was one of the first Republicans to urge recognition of mainland China, and he consistently counseled his party to be flexible in world affairs. He was widely credited with having persuaded his close friend, Wendell L. Willkie, to seek the presidency in 1940.

In 1952 he helped persuade Dwight D. Eisenhower to run. He retired 10 years ago as chairman of the board of his newspaper company, turning the title over to his son, John Cowles Jr. The fortunes of the empire he built have faltered in recent years. Investments in Harper's magazine and in a daily newspaper in Buffalo proved costly, and last year The Star was merged into The Tribune.

Last month John Cowles Sr. 1973 Photo the directors of what is now Cowles Media Co. ousted his son as president and publisher. Mr. Cowles was born in Algona, Iowa, on Dec.

14, 1898. Five years after his birth, his father, Gardner Cowles bought The Des Moines Register and Tribune and transformed it over the next 30 years into Iowa's premier newspaper. John Cowles began his newspaper career in Des Moines in 1920 as a reporter. He later switched to the business side of The Register and Tribune. In 1935, with his family's support, he bought a money-losing afternoon daily in Minneapolis, The Star.

Mr. Cowles bought a rival afternoon paper, The Journal, in 1939, and two years later he completed his Minneapolis sweep by buying the last competitor, The Tribune. Mr. Cowles was a consultant to the National Security Council under Eisenhower and was an adviser to disarmament agencies in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Newell A.

Visitation Sun. after 30 m. HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Alice White, who went from stand-in to star of such films as "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" after being discovered by Charlie Chaplin, has died of a stroke at the age of 76. Miss White made 36 movies between 1927 and 1949, including "Flamingo Road" and "Hot Stuff." She died at her home in Hollywood on Feb. 19, but her death was not reported until Friday.

Miss White was bouncy and temperamental and was a favorite of fans. She gained notoriety in two stormy marriages, first to actor Sidney Bartlett and later to film writer Jack Roberts. After her second divorce and last film appearance, both in 1949, she lived quietly in the same home where she died. Miss White was born in Paterson, N.J., and moved with her grandmother to Hollywood when she was 14. A year later, while working as a script girl at Chaplin's studio, she stumbled into a career as an actress.

Her rise to stardom was rapid. She was featured in "Harold Teen," the 1928 version of "Gentleman Prefer Blondes" and "American Beauty."
