ST.LDUI5 POST-DISPATCH June 2, 1982 7D ANNOUNCEMENTS 031 BIDS. PROPOSALS OTP. 033 LAUREL HILL 4 graves in I plot, $800 negotiable. 4284029 Channel 30 Scrambles For Extra Pay TV Dollars yet come to many areas, including the city of St. Louis, leaving an untapped market for services such as Preview.

"We don't have to worry about easements and things like that," Martin said. "All you need is the antenna and the (decoding) box, and comes with the Installation." Viewers already hooked up to a cable system can get the Preview service for its additional cost. The Preview operation is a business venture mounted by Cox Broadcasting of Atlanta, which owns KDNL. Although similar pay-television operations have proved successful in about 25 other cities, it is'the first time a hybrid mix of commercial and pay television has been tried in St. Louis.

"We were one of the first stations to apply" for pay-TV, said KDNL General Manager Jack Petrik. "The competition in television is keen. We have found that our most difficult time in programming is prime time after 7 p.m. Preview offered a good opportunity for us to give viewers an alternative during that time." the station will switch to Its pay-TV format each night at 7 o'clock. Unless a viewer has paid for the service, all he will get on Channel 30 after 7 p.m.

is a garbled picture. From now on, KDNL's nightly lineup will consist of first-run movies such as "The Four Seasons," with Alan Alda, "Stripes" with Bill Murray, and "Chapter Two," featuring Marsha Mason. Also, there will be musical and sports shows, and some R-rated adult entertainment late at night. Viewers who want the "Preview" service must pay an installation fee of $49.95 to get the antenna and decoder box that unscrambles the picture. There is also a $24.90 monthly fee.

Installation should be completed within a week after the subscription is taken, Martin said: The movie lineup and that fact that a bill comes every month sounds a lot like cable television. But Preview officials emphasize that there is a difference. "It's available right now to every household for a 70-mile radius around St. Louis," Martin said. Cable television has not signal is scrambled.

A special box Is needed to unscramble it. About 2,500 households had signed up for the new service by Tuesday night, Martin said. Station officers hope eventually to have as many as 150,000 households in the viewing area within a 70-mile radius of St. Louis. Viewers -who had settled In for a night of Channel 30's regular diet of syndicated shows, commercials and movies edited for television were in for a surprise Tuesday At 7 p.m., the station ran its introductory logo to the new service, then went into the Jack Lemmon.

movie "Tribute." About four minutes past seven, just as the movie credits were ending and the acting was about to begin, station officials ordered the buttons to be pushed to scramble the signal to all homes except those that had already paid for the service. "That was sort of a preview of Martin said. "We want viewers to know what's coming on, and to subscribe." Although KDNL will run its regular line-up of commercial programming during the day, By Monte Plott OlthePost-Dlspatch Staff Numbers are big in television. Any general manager who has ever sweated over ratings will testify to the (act that television lives and dies by numbers. But the numbers on the mind of Emest Martin Jr.

Tuesday night had more to do with phone calls than ratings as KDNL (Channel 30) Inaugurated its. pay-television service. "It's 993-3300 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for subscriptions," Martin said as KDNL engineers prepared to switch the station to its nighttime format of pay-TV.

Martin is general manager of KDNL's "Preview" service, which features uncut, uninterrupted movies and shows at night for a price. Although cable television systems are spreading in the St. Louis area, Preview marks the first attempt in St. Louis at pay-TV without a cable. The station's signal is transmitted and picked up on an antenna like that of a regular television station but the Survivor Of Auto Crash Gets $3.9 Million, $4,000 A Month nfw YORK niPH Stem, 22.
