Al JUN 1 1982 3 Preservative In Injections May Have Killed 16 Infants Compiled From News Services WASHINGTON The Food and Drug Administration is alerting pediatricians and hospitals to stop using benzyl alcohol in intravenous solutions for premature infants. Studies have linked the preservative to the deaths of 16 babies in two hospitals.

Researchers at the hospitals in New Orleans and Portland, found traces of the preservative in the blood or urine of premature, low-weight infants who had died in those cities in the past year. The FDA said it was mailing letters today to 50,000 pediatricians, hospital pharmacists and hospital administrators advising them to use other preservatives that do not contain benzyl alcohol in solutions for premature infants. William Grigg, spokesman for the FDA, said benzyl alcohol often was used in solutions to flush an intravenous or arterial catheter after drawing blood from a premature baby. Otherwise, the blood can clot and prevent doctors or nurses from reusing the same tube for giving food or medicine to the infant. It is also used as a preservative in multiple dose vials of some intravenous medicines.

The deaths of the 16 babies "followed a pattern of gasping, respiration, unresponsiveness and sometimes seizures," the agency said Monday. All the infants had other medical problems requiring intensive care and intravenous us feedings and medicine. Because of those concerns, "The additional burden posed by the preservative was not previously recognized," the FDA said. The FDA said no problems with benzyl alcohol had been reported with older infants, children or adults. The agency said it first had heard of the suspected link from researchers led by Dr.

Juan J. Gershanik, director of neonatology at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. He studied the deaths of six infants there. then learned that Dr. William J.

Brown and Professor Neil R.M. the Oregon Health Sciences UniversityDoernbecher Memorial Hospital for Children in Portland had reached the same conclusion in studying the deaths of 10 infants. Grigg said the manufacture of the preservative was common among pharmaceutical companies. "Apparently hospitals like the preservative because it takes care of a concern that the solutions have sat around for awhile," he said.
