ST. LOUIS PUS I -DISPATCH April 8, 1982 5C Junior Win Is Household (er) Word As Cincinnati Topples Cubs Chism Dies; Baseball Star Funeral services for 'Elijah "Eli" Chism, former black league major league ballplayer and a member of the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2765 LaSalle Avenue.

Chism, who was 65, played outfield with the Cleveland Buckeyes and the Birmingham Black Barons of the former Negro National League. Earlier, he had played on eight championship teams in the Tandy League here and was inducted into the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame three years ago. Chism is survived by his wife, LeNora; a son, two daughters and two brothers, one of whom, John, also played in the black big league. "The body will be at Watson Mortuary, 3441 Park Street, Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. fl FROM PAGE ONE year ago, when the football player was having problems with a girlfriend.

"He and his girlfriend his former girlfriend were having problems and this (possible drug use) went through my mind," the elder Junior said. "He was in that kind of environment. I asked him if he was using drugs and he said, Junior, reached at his apartment in Tuscaloosa today, declined to comment. He said, "Basically, I have nothing to say now. I want to see my lawyer first." Junior said he had a lawyer in Tuscaloosa.

Cardinals Coach Jim Hanifan said he had not spoken with Junior since the arrest but hoped to do so in the next few days. "I'd rather not get into it rigltf now," he said. "As of now, we don't know the entire situation. We're waiting to find out. As of now, we have no comment.

We'll wait and see what takes place and go from there." According to police in Tuscaloosa, Junior was arrested by the West Alabama Narcotics Squad, a special team made up of five city policemen, two county policemen and one state officer. The raid was made on a dwelling in the Broadmoor Apartments registered to James Martin Salyer, 18. Police said Salyer had three charges filed against him: sale of LSD and cocaine, possession-of marijuana and possession of cocaine. His bond was set at $9,000. Authorities said that when they entered Salyer's apartment at 11 p.m.

Tuesday with a search warrant, they confiscated cocaine, marijuana and LSD. Police declined to say whether they had been investigating Junior or whether he simply was caught in the middle of another investigation. A department official said Junior had cocaine and marijuana in his possession when he was arrested. Under Alabama law, a person can be charged with a misdemeanor if the amount of marijuana suggests that it is intended for personal consumption. But if suspects have larger quantities, they are charged with a felony, which is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and imprisonment 2 to 15 years.

"We had more than enough to charge him (Junior), a police official said. "We decided to charge him with a felony and let the grand jury reduce it." 1 Most of the men arrested with Junior were in their 20s, authorities said. One of them had been arrested three times on drug-related charges, police said. Junior's father said his son was renting a house for the winter and summer sessions at the university. Sylvester Crooms, an assistant football coach at Alabama, said Junior occasionally worked out with the team this spring and often watched Bryant send the players through football drills.

A consensus All-America defensive end for the Crimson Tide, Junior was among the finalists for the 1980 Lombardi Trophy, an award given to the nation's top lineman. He was the Cardinals' No. 1 draft choice last year. Although he did not start until the fourth game of the 1981 season.Munior's total of 72 tackles was the fourth-highest on the team. "I won't repeat what it was I said, but I think I got the message across," said Carew, whose lowest batting average in the last 14 years was .307 in 1971.

Zahn gave up only four hits in pitching-the first shutout of the season in the American League. "We pitched lousy and their guy pitched very well," said A's Manager Billy Martin. Twins 7, Mariners 5 MINNEAPOLIS Ken Hrebek hit a home run and Jim Eisenreicji drove in two runs with his first major-league hit, a single, as Minnesota beat Seattle. Starter Roger Erickson pitched the first five innings for the victory and Doug Corbett, the fourth Minnesota pitcher, worked the final 2 innings for a save. Eisenreich's two-run single sparked a five-run fourth inning off loser Jim Beattie as the Twins built a 6-2 advantage.

"I thought the kids were a little nervous last night," said Minnesota Manager Billy Gardner of the club's 11-7 loss to the Mariners on opening night, which spoiled the Twins' debut in their $55 million domed stadium. "I thought we were more alert tonight and more aggressive." Richie Zisk and Jim Maler had home runs for Seattle. Compiled From News Services CINCINNATI Reds fans got their 'money's worth Wednesday night as the home team defeated the Chicago Cubs, 6-2, in 35-degree weather, i Under conditions more suited for a football game, rookie right fielder Paul Householder continued to help the fans forget his predecessor, Dave Collins, by cracking a triple and a home run as he powered Cincinnati to victory. The spectators also witnessed the season's first beaning, as Dickie Noles fired a fastball that hit Clint Hurdle's helmet in the fourth inning, nearly touching off a brawl. Hurdle was not seriously injured, but both benches emptied before the umpires restored order.

Righthanded pitcher Bruce Berenyi, with relief help from Joe Price and Tom Hume, was the winner as the Reds evened the series at a game apiece. i Braves 6, Padres 4 SAN DIEGO Atlanta pitcher Bob Walk says it usually takes two or three innings to get his feet on the ground. After walking two San Diego batters in the first inning, Walk knew he was on shaky footing. But then he settled down and blanked San Diego for seven innings. "I've been notorious for getting into trouble in the early innings," Walk said after equaling his 1981 victory total.

i The Padres, shut out 1-0 in Tuesday's opener, finally broke the scoreless string with three unearned runs in the eighth inning and an earned run in the ninth. The Braves took a 3-0 lead in the third irihing on run-scoring singles by Brett Butler and Claudell Washington and a run-scoring double by Dale Murphy. Murphy's homer over the left-center-field fence gave Atlanta a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning and the Braves increased their lead to 5-0 in the seventh. Dodgers 9, Giants 2 LOS ANGELES Ken Landreaux admits he had been a little miffed about coming out of Tuesday's game for a pinch hitter. "I wasn't trying to show up the manager," said the Dodgers center fielder, "but I'm just eager to go, that's all." Wednesday night Landreaux lashed four singles and walked in the Dodgers' victory over San Francisco, their second straight triumph.

Ron Cey cracked his first homer as the Dodgers pounded four Giants pitchers for 14 hits. The Giants, who had won only 26 of the last 87 meetings over five years against Los Angeles, contributed three costly errors. Right fielder Jack Clark dropped a fly ball that led to three unearned runs in the third inning, when the Dodgers scored five times. Darrell Evans committed two errors in the fifth inning that led to two more unearned runs. Bob Welch gave up three hits in the second inning when the Giants scored their two runs, then retired 11 in a row in earning the victory.

Steve Howe finished up for the Dodgers, pitching the ninth. After the Giants had taken the lead, the Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the second on Cey's bases-empty homer and singles by Pedro Guerrero and Mike Scioscia and a sacrifice fly by Welch. Bill Russell's bases-loaded single in the third inning knocked in two runs, breaking the tie, and then Clark lost Steve Sax's long fly to right and two more runs scored. Sax then came home on a single by Landreaux. Last year Carew, perhaps the best pure hitter in baseball the last 14 years, managed only one hit in 16 at-bats off Norris. "Michael pitched very well against me," Carew said after teaming with Geoff Zahn, Fred Lynn and Brian Downing in leading California over Oakland, "but that was 1981. He said some things about me which I didn't appreciate.

I was very disappointed in him. He should have known things have a way of evening out in baseball." "As the 1982 season started, Carew was determined to do something about Norris and the A's. He had two doubles, a single and a walk, stole a base, drove in two runs and scored two Wednesday night, with his three hits all coming off Norris1. He hit his first double in the opening inning, driving in California's initial run. As he stood on second, Carew couldn't resist the temptation to say something to Norris, and he did.
