AC June 20, 1975 ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH Cellist Featured At Pops Concert By JOHN CULLINANE A crowd of about 1000 may have gone home humming the ing familiar the last tunes part they of heard the dur- St. Louis County Pops concert last night, but the most important musical event of the evening was the earlier performance of young cellist Ronald Thomas. Thomas, as the featured soloist, performed with the St. Louis Symphony at Queeny Park under the sure baton of conductor Frederick Fennell.

Fennell, who is the conductor in residence at the University of Miami, made his first of two appearances with the County Pops. Thomas was remarkably self-assured as he coaxed and demanded from his cello the intricacies of Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra. Despite a few out-of-tune lapses that went largely unnoticed by the audience, Thomas did a masterful job on piece a of very music. ornate, The difficult balance. between his playing and the orchestra's was exceptional and heightened the effect of Thomas fast technique when the orchestra dropped out altogether.

Perhaps one of the most important functions of the Pops series so far has been to introduce St. Louis audiences to some young talent. Credit be given to the grease orchestra for again adjusting well to the nuances of another conductor. Fennell did a good job explaining the pieces performed, which included some Shostakovich, Handel, Sulli- WANT AD INDEX The numbers in the index below refe. to the classification number and not the page number.

No conductor so far has been able to duplicate the tastefully comic quality of Richard Hayman's conducting, though. A musical highlight before the "pops" part of the concert was Sullivan's music from the ballet "Pineapple Poll." After a rousing opening number, the "bits and snatches" of Sullivan, as Fennell put it, move from the pensiveness sounded by French horns to a happy finale featuring chimes and cascading flute parts. During the pops part of the concert, which was dominated by American composers, the crowd heard a piece that most already knew by heart as the number that often preceded movies in the early days of television.

This is the one that starts with the ticktocking of wood blocks called "The Syncopated Clock" by Anderson. Several brassy waltzes from Carousel were performed along with a mild swing version of Gershwin's "Love Walked In," made exotic by the addition of a conga drum. Two fast-paced march numbers were also played: Texidor's "Spanish March" and Gershwin's "Strike Up The Band." Gershwin is more popular than ever, it seems. Mrs. Ford, who danced with the company as Betty Bloomer, applauded the performance enthusiastically from a $125 orchestra seat at the Uris Theater that she paid for herself. Her presence helped raise more than $200,000 for Miss Graham's financially troubled dance company and school. The chief artistic attractions were the most famous Western dance team Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. It couldn't be a more thrilling occasion," said Mrs.

Ford, who wore a flowing deep-violet chiffon gown. She was accompanied by comedian Woody Allen and actress Diane Keaton. Allen was dressed in a tuxedo and black-and-white sneakers. "I like these better than those other shoes everyone else wears," he said. Among the celebrities at the performance were Lauren Bacall, Jean Kennedy Smith, Pat Kennedy Lawford, Polly Bergen, Dick Cavett, Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward.

Like many others in the audience, Miss Woodward said she studied with Miss Graham "25 years ago." Andy Warhol who escorted Paulette Goddard, said he danced with a Martha Graten ham troupe when he was 16.
