4E ST.LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Tough-Talking Flyers Put Money Where Mouth Is mm' prep notes by jerry stack. rumimvj int wai to the Illi Yakety yak, don't talk back. The Coasters, 1958. Practice had ended for the East St. Louis High football team.

And now the players were playing another game. Call it pull the leg of the reporter, which, thank goodness, is far safer than pull the leg of the ball carrier. East St. Louis's Flyers have pulled the legs of numerous ball carriers this season, often separating carrier from ball. They are ranked No.

1 in the area by the Post-Dispatch and No. 1 in Illinois by the United Press International. And this Saturday afternoon they will match 11-0 records with Chicago's Gordon Tech in a semifinal game of the Illinois Class 5A playoffs at Parsons Field. The Flyers, vicious hitters though are on the field, are just a bunch of good-natured talkers off the field. Big I 1 fiC fllV flU nois High School football champion 1 sip is East St.

Even Howard Cosell would be proud. "He'll talk you to death," said assistant coach Gordon Schoby. "Talk to him, C.C.," nose guard Gary Moore urged. Crosby talked about the speed of the Flyers. "We've got some speed," he said.

"Kenny Jones is the fastest. He does the 40 in 4.3." Missouri Rankings This week's Missouri Sports Writers and Sportscasters Association high school football rankings: TONITE V' "Can't catch a lick," said quarterback Maurice Tol-son, nixing the idea. Eugene Byrd, a talker in his own right, does the catching for the Flyers. He has caught 34 passes for 682 yards and 13 touchdowns. Byrd and Tolson have formed a combination almost as devastating as the Flyers' defensive front four.

"These two kids, they know each other," head coach Corny Perry said of Tolson and Byrd. "It's a matter of communicating." Sometimes there's too much communicating. With all the talkers on the Flyers, sometimes Tolson gets more help than he wants in trying to call the plays. "Yeah, in the huddle Fred Ford will say, 'Let me run the or Byrd will say, 'Throw a little one out Tolson said. Thank goodness for the offensive line.

They just do their job. "The offensive line's been right this year," said Tolson. And the defensive front four Crosby, Barry Crayton, Anthony Green and Lee malone has done the job of silencing the opposing quarterbacks. Yakety yak, don't talk back. Tolson is thankful he doesn't have to face them and thankful Perry won't let them practice on Tolson during practice.

"They blow the whistle on us," Crosby said with a frown. "In the past we used to hit during practice," Perry said. "But we broke up too many of our ulavers." "That's why we hit so hard on Saturdays," McGruder said. "We take out our frustrations (of not hitting in practice)." A sobering thought for Gordon Tech was offered by linebacker Mike Hill. "I still say we haven't played up to our potential," Hill said.

"We've been talking about playing the St. Louis Cardinals to test said Moore. "Now guys get serious," Perry said. No way. "Why don't you be for real, Crosby," admonished linebacker Ron McGruder. "Mel Gray doesn't run that fast." Crosby shrugged his shoulders. And went on talking. He tried to explain why he has failed to score a touchdown this year. "I don't know," he said.

"I had three last year." Stanley Braggs, defensive halfback, had an explanation. "We're gonna tackle Crosby if he ever recovers a fumble," Braggs said. "If he ever scores we'd never stop his mouth." Crosby took that as a compliment and went on. He talked about a desire to play tight end. Yes, I want to enjoy the NEW Post-Dispatch with better printing better pictures better color.

Louis 13 0 i-orresi, Day 12 der, so much so that Friedman is being evicted from his apartment, Kay said. "He's lost every cent he had," said Kay. "He's done everything he can to keep things together he wanted to do something to show that he wasn't just absconding with the funds. But Friedman has been able to do nothing and bankrupty proceedings have begun. "He's so down in the mouth," said Kay.

"He's really depressed and he's broke." Friedman just last year had sold his interest in a thriving garment business. He immediately plowed all the profits from that sale into PHTA and made grand plans to stage nine tournaments throughout the United States and Canada with a Stanley Cup to follow. "This is no joke," proclaimed Friedman as he stopped in St. Louis during a cross-country tour last summer. "Seven months ago, people told me this was just all a dream," said Friedman at the time.

"Nobody's laughing now." No, nobody is laughing now. Not Friedman. Not the folks who invested in the losing proposition either. By Rick Hummel Of the Post-Dispatch Staff The Professional Table Hockey Association tournament scheduled for this weekend at the Rodeway Inn has been canceled, mainly because there no longer is a Professional Table Hockey Association. "It is with deep sadness that I convey this message to you," began commissioner Mel Friedman in a letter to his constituents.

"Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, we have been forced to cease operations, due to the fact that the PTHA is bankrupt. "I regret any inconvenience this may have caused you." The "inconveniences" included $5 for membership in the association, $25 to compete in any tournament (none of which were held) and $30 if one wished to purchase a PTHA sanctioned table game. According to Friedman's attorney, Mitch Kay of New York, an investor who was to have contributed $50,000 to help launch PTHA's first season of operation, backed out at the last minute. State College, who led his team to an 11-4-1 record last season, has been named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 1973 soccer coach of the year and will be honored at the NAIA Soccer Hall of Fame banquet in Florissant Nov. 26.

The banquet will precede the NAIA national soccer tournament at Florissant's Koch Park Nov. 27, 28 and 30. Egli was selected in voting by the NAIA Soccer Coaches day morning shortly after being shot in the head with a .32 caliber bullet during a scuffle at a fraternity house. No arrests have yet been made in the case, but Shirley speculated an arrest would be made within a week when he suggested the calling of a special grand jury. Shirley revealed Monday that Williams wore a holster and said he might have been killed with his own gun and yesterday he discounted reports that the holster might have been planted on CHAMPAIGN, 111., Nov.

13 State's Attorney James Burgess says there is no need to call a special grand jury to hear evidence in the shooting death of Illinois football player Greg Williams, adding that the evidence can be presented to the regular grand jury when it convenes Nov. 23. Champaign police chief Harvey Shirley had said Monday a special grand jury should be convened to hear evidence.
