"Some of the children were acting like it was the first day of the term," said Noah Neace, superintendent of the East Side district. "I -think, they were real happy to be back." They were back because a 27-day strike by teachers had ended. Maintenance employes reported to work well before dawn yesterday to dust desks, prepare buses and check equipment that had been dormant since the strike began Oct.

2. Neace said he hoped the remainder of the school year would proceed without interruption. Many students questioned their teachers about conditions in the St. Clair County Jail in Belleville, where four union officers had been imprisoned for five nights on contempt-of-court citations. "My husband said quite a few students had asked him what it was like to be in jail, but on the whole they were anxious to get back to their studies," said Mrs.

Edward Geppert, whose husband is president of the teachers' union. The union officers were released from the jail Tuesday after the contract was ratified. Cahokia High School's sports schedule was disrupted by the strike, Neace said. Only one football game the season's finale against Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville remains to be played, he said. A game scheduled for this weekend against Edwards-ville High School was cancelled because coaches believed the team lacked time to practice, Neace said.

Neace said the strike had prevented the girls' tennis team from competing in a regional tournament. Two football games had to be canceled as well. Clark Span Repairs Near End Replacement of the bridge deck and structural repairs on the Clark Bridge, which carries U.S. Highway 67 over the Mississippi River at Alton, have progressed rapidly, and the bridge could be reopened to traffic by December, the project engineer on the bridge job says. Ray Hamtil of Fruin-Colnon said about 1500 feet of roadway on the bridge had been replaced since the bridge was closed for repairs July 14.

Only a few structural repairs remain to be done, Hamtil said. The contract for the bridge repairs awarded to Fruin-Colnon for $2,498,000.
