The mild sentences took into account that Flight Lts. Roy Lawrence and Alistair Inverarity spent 13 days under close arrest after the incident.

The maximum punishment would have been two years in prison. "The severe reprimands will remain a blot on the officers' records, but they can now return to flight duties as soon as their squadron commander wishes them to," an RAF spokesman said.
