After holding the diamonds for a month.

Holtzman took them to a jeweler, who informed him they were rhinestones worth about 25 cents. Sept. 15 a "Mr. Greenberg" visited the shop and negotiated to purchase the property for $14,000. He returned Sept.

27 and was followed into the shop by a "Mr. Le-vine," who posed as a "smuggler of diamonds from Belgium." and a "Mr. Tineberg-, who posed as a jeweler. Levins produced eight glittering stones which Tineberg weighed on a jeweler's scale and appraised at $4600. Tineberg wanted to buy them, but' had only $2600.

Greenberg lent him $560 and Holtzman was induced to lend the other $2100 until the next day. and take the diamonds as security, until the loan was repaid. Holtzman withdrew the $2109 from his account at the Industrial Loan Co. and gave it to Tineberg. Tineberg did not return to repay the $2100 loan and recover the diamonds.

Levine and Greenberg also failed to return. Holtzman, however, had the diamonds and did not worry until yesterday, when he held them to the sunlight and saw through them. He became alarmed as he had heard one could not through real diamonds. So he rushed to a jeweler, who confirmed his suspicion that he had ien swindled. The swindle is identical with one by which three men obtained S280 from Mrs.

26. Forty thousand registrants in Hudson and Essex Counties, Democratic strongholds, face the prospect of being struck off the rolls on the ground that they are illegally registered. This action followed a State Supreme Court decision holding constitutional the law giving superintendents of election the right to remove from tie lists such names as they believe to be Illegally registered. This law was passed by the Republican Legislature early this month over the vetoof the Democratic Gov. Moore.

More than 24,008 names were ordered off the registry lists in Hudson County yesterday by John Ferguson, superintendent of elections. The recourse of those affected is to apply to the courts to show they are legally registered. Democratic leaders interpret the action as an effort to -Gov. Smith. They say that the redress to the courts given to voters whose names are striclzen from the means little as the time is sa short before election that only a small part of the will have an opportunity to be heard.

They also have asked for an investigation of the registration in Atlantic City, one of the strong Republican cities where 76 per cent of the estimated population is registered.
