Louis Stars coach John Sewell is convinced his team is capable of winning the North American Soccer League title. "If we can just hang in there for a couple more games until our English boys arrive, we can go a long way," said Sewell. "We made some mistakes last season but we've corrected them this year. We could go all the way. It wouldn't surprise me a bit." The Stars, scheduled to meet the Timbers tonight in Portland, currently are tied with the defending champion Toronto Metros for first place in the Northern Division of the North American Soccer League's Atlantic Conference.

"Our object has been to just hold the fort until all our players have arrived," said Sewell. "The lads have done a fantastic job under the circumstances." The circumstances are that the Stars have played their first five games without three signed English League veterans, whose arrival has been delayed because their teams are still involved in division races. "We've been a victim of circumstances," said Sewell. "But the future looks very bright." Part of that future is 34-year old goalkeeper John (Jocko) Jackson, a veteran of more than 480 English League matches. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Jackson, who currently is toiling with Orient of the English League's Second Division, was signed by the Stars yesterday and is expected to join the team by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

"Orient needs two points," said Sewell. "If it gets them by this weekend, Jackson and Peter Bennett could be here by Tuesday."
