DEL RIO (TEXAI) NEWHERALD, Thurntey, II, 1J74-7 Oval And Round Football and basketball fans can parlay their respective sentiments here this weekend since both grid ana cage contests are on the community scene. This evening at 6 p.m. the Ram frosh kickoff with the incoming Crystal City Javelins and after we win that one our JV Bucks battle the B-team Java and we should do better than the two-point decision we had when the two units met in the Spinach Capital. Then on Saturday the varsity Rams visit Edgewood Stadium for that bout with the Kennedy Rockets in a 7:30 p.m. contest and in spite of the fact that the bus company did not have a vehicle for charter this weekend, there should be a goodly group of Queen Citizens at San Antonio.

In the interim here Saturday morning the doors to Cody Wardlaw Gym will be wide open for a game-like scrimmage between our varsity basketball units. The session, somewhere's around 10:30 a.m. will be complete with Val Verde County SBOA officials calling the shots and should be an interesting introduction to the 1974-75 cage prospectus. You'll be looking at nine lettermen from last year's vanity squad and there 11 be some talent which was developed on the JV Whiz Kid crew which went 22-2 and the Frosh Zizz Kids who went 14-0. Since the coming of Jim Harris as head coach for the cage sport a year ago, the Ram basketball program has initiated a solid off-season dedication and it will show even earlv this time around the country's hardwood courts.

The big Rams open the pre-district campaign with a trip to Corpus Christ! to face King on Nov. 15 and Carroll on Nov. 16. The JV's open on Nov. 19 at San Angelo Central and the Ram Soph team gets baptism on Nov.

22 at Laredo Martin. Saturday's free scrimmage at the downtown Cody Wardlaw will afford the fans a look at varsity, JV and Soph players in action against each other. The gym entrance is on West Martin Street with a gate also to be open for access to the parking lot on the Junior High campus. For the folks who can't make the trip to San Antonio and the Ram versus Rocket contest, there's a Peewee Football League doubleheader at Memorial Stadium here Satuday afternoon. The little fellers will again start the twinbill with a 1 p.m.

kickoff. Different Format Fans here who saw the Kennedy-Del Rio contest last year recall that the Rockets filled the air with no less than 39 passes and hit on 20 of them but lost 21-14. The reason the Rockets went upstairs was two-fold. First they had no place to go on the turf as the Ram defensive unit shut them off for a total of 39 yards all night. Secondly they brought that youngster named Oscar Arcos, a slick receiver, and their strong-armed quarterback Roy Soto to the Queen Citv.

Both are gone 'from the white ranks of the Rockets and we'll prooapiy oe looKing at more run than pass Saturday night in the Edgewood Stadium. This year's signal caller for JFK was last year's defensive standout, Greg Rodriguez and he's the second best scorer in the district so he must option a lot. Put the lock on the key Rocket and you can be 3-2 in district Saturday night, fellers. The game format also should be different from most past performances by our own Rams. With all hands healthy this week and some snappy sessions in the work week the Rams could go on from that 37-0 victory to another decisive decision at San Antonio.

S'true that the Rockets are big but we have the stuff to turn the corners or pass around or over the front line. Such tactics were in the practice mill we attended the past two evenings here. Yup, I'm optimistic and confident. One of the Queen City keys will be Mike Paolini, the 180-pound lineman who will be initiated to double duty Saturday since Randall Favor moved out of town this week. Paolini is 30 pounds heavier than Favor and has dedication in huge quantities plus ability.

He has been a player who acted like he wanted in on every down. Now he's to have that opportunity and the Saturday baptism at dual duty will be his challenge and a test of his endurance. Coach C.D. McFadin, who with Coach John Kallinger, handles the unsung linemen, believes Paolini has the stuff to make the grade on a fulltime basis against Kennedy. So do we after watching him operate in practice sessions this week.

All-Weather Tourney Eddie Hollingsworth, prexy of the Amistad Bass Club, said this morning, "What's with this norther. We have the Chamber of Commerce team tournament set for this weekend." So what, Senor President, go fish in it, says we. Hollingsworth will angle for some of that three thou-plus prize dough with partner Red May field. Both are good bassmen plan will be to use topwater lures early and then go deep. To ready themselves for the big event they poured a special batch of plastic worms red with black heads.

They also have a tune-up run set for this afternoon and what they'll probably do is to toss worms and topwaters only to affect the hits and not to bring anything to net. You just might see Hollingsworth rig up a surface lure today that would give you fits unless you knew what he was up to. He'll probably extract the trebles from the topwater and fire it out there seeking a strike. Red will cast his worm, let the fish pick it up and then vibrate the rod slightly causing the bass to spit it out. All the Hollingsworth-Mavfield combo care about between now and tourney day Saturday is to establish some kind of honey holes.

They believe if they can locate some fish today, they'll go after "em with vigor and sharp hooks on tournament days. It may pay off for these two crafty cats, That's 30. Having Difficulty Obtaining Auto lisuranci? Rockets Threaten Rams With Beefy Blockbusters IRON MIKE-When the Del Rio Rams visit Edgewood Stadium to play the Kennedy Rockets Saturday night, Mike Paolini, 180-pound lineman will be starting offensively and defensively as Del Rio seeks to surpass the .500 mark in District 32-AAAA play. The Rams are 2-2 and Kennedy is 2-1 in loop action. (News-Herald Photo) Six count 'em linemen wearing the green and white of the John F.

Kennedy Rockets are young but beefy players the Del Rio Rams. AH. six hit 200 pounds or better with the average at 209. To add to the heft the Rockets have three more 195-pounders before dropping down to 185 and 180. Del Rio has just come off of whupplng up on one of the Rockets' fellow townmen, the Lanier Vote, but the 37-0 victims didn't have any beef and very tittle tallow.

In fact the whole 31 player squad at Lanier averaged out at a modest 149 pounds; extremely light for a Class AAAA unit. JFK's Rockets, mildly successful this year with an overall record of 3-3-1 and a District 32-AAAA mark of 2-1, are fresh from a 20-0 victory over Holy Cross of San Antonio's 3-AAA Catholic District. The Rockets' red glare is Greg Rodriguez who occupies the 32-4A runerup scoring slot. At a new post this year Rodriguez directs the Kennedy dan from the signal calling slot after earning monograms at defensive secondary positions the past two seasons. Coupled with the convert are 196-pound halfback Jimmy Agulrre, 170-pound fullback George Garza and 150-pound tailback Juan Rodriguez.

From scouting reports and a Kennedy film the concensus of opinion held by Del Rio and head coach Claude Fest and his staff rate the Rockets at the "best fundamentally executing SCHOOLBOy POLL Cuero Gobblers Now Rule Roost By The Associated Press The Cuero Gobblers, ing state Class 3A champions, emerged as the king pin in The Associated Press Schoolboy Football Poll this meek after a full scale shakeup in which all 10 ranked teams changed positions. Gary Malesky, the head mentor at JFK, had the Rockets pretty sharp the last time the Del Rloans met them. The Rams came away with a seven-point margin after the two squads battled here for 13 first downs each and Kennedy piled up a total of 305 yards, 266 via the passing game.

JFK's aerial attack went 20 of 39 and produced both Rocket TD's plus the two bonus points.
