He apparently was gouged by a skate of the Islanders' Clark Gillies, and the club officials said today he would be out for four to six weeks. In the World Hockey Association, the Phoenix Roadrunners announced the purchase of forward Jan Popiel from the Houston Aeros. Popiel, who suffered a broken jaw in November and missed six weeks of action, was the leading scorer of the Central Hockey League while playing with Oklahoma City 23 goals and 16 assists in 32 games.

Bowling Denny Phillips and Mel Salisbury of Dayton, 0., took over the first two places in singles competition of the American Bowling Congress tournament at Reno, Nev. Phillips rolled a 257 game and followed with 213 and 204 for a 674 series. Salisbury rolled 664. The tournament will continue through May 4. Baseball Rico Carty drove in three runs with a homer and a double for the Dominican Republic as it defeated Venezuela, 3-0, and Mexico edged Puerto Rico, 2-1, in the Winter League World Series in Caracas, Venezuela.

Soccer The Toronto Metros, last year's North American Soccer League champions, traded Wolfgang Sundholz and Eusebio to the Las Vegas Quicksilvers for future considerations. Basketball Sam Schulman, the principal owner of the Seattle SuperSonics, said the Sonics may have to let manager Bill Russell go when his contract expires July 1, 1978, because Russell is "too. expensive." Russell's salary has been estimated at $400,000 a year. Georgia, led by Charles Ellis and Wesley Cash, won the LSU invitational tournament at Baton Rouge. Skiing Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden finished first in the men's slalom in the World Cup meet in St. Anton, Austria. Klaus Heidegger of Austria was second and Paul Frommelt of Liechtenstein third. Jim Denney of Duluth, won the senior men's title and his brother Jeff, captured the junior crown in the United States ski jumping championships in Gilford, N.H.

Speed Skating Liz Crowe of St. Louis won the intermediate women's title in the North American championships in Ste. Foye, Quebec. Medal winners on the St. Louis team in the speed skating competition in the Winter Olympics for Retarded Children in Steamboat Springs, were Chris Brendel, Sheila Carr and Glen Umbach (golds); Julie Asek and Mary Beth Leim-berg (silvers) and Marsh Drake (bronze).

Figure Skating Sixteen-year-old Linda Fratianne of Northridge, Calif, captured the senior women's title in the United States championships in Hartford, Conn. Barbie Smith of Denver was second. Motor Sports John Graves of Key Largo, and Hurley Haywood of Jacksonville, teamed to drive their Porsche Carrera to victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona. They won the race by more than two laps and shared a winning purse of $16,900. It was Haywood's fifth victory.

Funk lost his NWA title to Harley Race at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and suffered a knee injury that will force him to be sidelined for an undetermined length of time.

Race will replace Funk in Friday's main event on the pro wrestling card at Kiel Auditium, meeting Superstar Billy Graham.
