NEW HOURS Thirty-year-old James R. Smith of Detroit, unable to pay a fine of $25 and costs of $13 imposed last Friday in Auburn city court, was taken to the Indiana State Penal Farm at Putnamville Tuesday afternoon. Smith was taken to the penal farm by Sheriff Frank E. Carpenter after commitment was ordered by City Judge Harold D. StumD.

SATISFIED MILLIONS RELY Oil ASP FOR QUALITY AND (By F. Dean Bechtol) The district meeting at Garrett one week from tonight will be one of the most important of the year. Just a month before district elections and two months before the convention. Legion politics is beginning to boil. The district steering committee has been called together for this meeting.

The district hospital committee has been called together for a special session at 7 o'clock, before the district meeting. We think that the most amusing incident to come out of a Garrett district meeting happened many years ago. Fort Wayne Post 47 had CUT-UP morning on U. S. 27 while riding in an automobile driven by Merl J. Smedley, 28, also of Detroit.

Smedley, booked at first for investigation on charges of drunken driving, was tried Friday afternoon on a reckless driving charge. He was fined $25 and $14.75 costs and given a 10-day suspended jail term. Smedley was released Friday night after payment of his fine. The pair was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Walter R. Schuster.

They told the officer they were en route to a party in Fort Wayne and admitted they began celebrating the affair before they got there. Smith will serve his time at the penal farm at the rate of $1 a day until his fine and the court costs are paid. He may be released before, however, if his fine and costs are paid. Everett, 43, died Monday at the Elmhurst hospital at Angola. He had been ill for the past year and in serious condition for the past four weeks. He underwent brain surgery a month ago at the University hospital at Ann Arbor, and was transferred to the Elmhurst hospital last Thursday. The body was removed to the Kistler funeral home at Hudson and funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist church in Hudson at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The pastor, Rev. Jay Morris, will officiate at the services and burial will be in the Circle cemetery. The Hudson Masonic lodge will conduct graveside rites. Mr. Everett was born- at Wren, on April 4, 1914.

He was a real estate dealer and until recently owned the Ever-ette Furniture Store in Hudson. He was also a cable inspector in the plant of the International Harvester Co. at Fort Wayne. Survivors include the widow, the former Dahlia Gross; three daughters, Shirley, Joan and Bonnie, and a son, Albert all at home; his father, Lester Everett of Ashley; a brother and seven sisters. Drought its band to play a concert on the streets before the meeting.

They had beautiful, even -if rather gaudy, uniforms. After the concert one of the drummers, who had worked hard all day and who had little interest in the meeting itself, decided to just go back to the car and rest until after the meeting. He had come in a new Buick belonging to another member. The car was parked ori East King street. He went to the car, loosened his collar, parked his drum on the floor and drifted happily off to dreamland and a much deserved rest.

Early the next morning, with a bright sun shining down, Doctor Klingler went out to get his new Buick, which had been parked close to the Fort Wayne car. The doctor was amazed to find our drummer, still blissfully asleep in the back seat of his car. The gaudy uniform, which was so attractive in a massed band, looked slightly out of place on one man alone on Sunday morning. After embarrassed explanations to the doctor he called for help and was transported back to the city. Clarence Brookmeyer, former Garrett boy and now of Findlay, was in the city over Easter.

Clarence is a past commander of Miami Post and a past commander of his district, with a most credible record in the Ohio department. Frank Kish, all tanned up and swaggering, was back in town over the weekend. Harry Gault is still in serious condition at the hospital. Bob Freeman is getting better and impatient. Lloyd DeBolt of Fort Wayne, 47, department hospital chairman and treasurer of our district hospital committee, was admitted to the hospital at 9 last Thursday evening.

We talked to him in the admitting room. At 12:30 he was dead. His death was staggering to all of us who worked with him. It is most difficult to pick up the threads of a man's work and intentions. Howard Tibbals and Dean Bechtol attended the joint memorial service for Lloyd held by the Legion and 40-8 at Fort Wayne Sunday evening.
