Then, at Wednesday's practice session, Fuerman suffered a sprained ankle while making a routine layup. He would miss the Pirates' opening game against University City in the DeSmet tourney.

"We didn't have time to get anything ready when we found out," said St. Charles coach Gary Wacker. "All we could do was show up and try to get enough points to win." The Pirates showed up last night at DeSmet and they did get enough points to win, 67-64. But Fuerman was sorely missed. Johnnie James, U.

City's razor-thin junior center, had a field day playing By John Sonderegger Of the Post-Dispatch Staff The Pirates of St. Charles High have been billed as THE team to beat this basketball season. In a preseason poll of area coaches, St. Charles was voted No. 1 in the St.

Louis area. Ever since last March and a disappointing third-place finish in the Missouri Class 4A tournament, the Pirates have been planning and plotting for this season. On Monday night, center Rick Fuer-man, a 6-foot-6 senior, went to the DeSmet tournament to watch Central and Vashon. He was preparing himself for a possible rematch with Central, the I yaw--nr Jj: I asf jl UAASL Squeezes Win As Bone Scores 42 Even with Fuerman in the lineup, Wacker said he expected a battle from the Indians. "This wasn't totally unexpected," he said.

"James gave us fits last year when he was a sophomore." St. Charles and University City are the teams expected to fight it out for the Suburban West Conference title. They will meet two more times in league games. "We'll be ready for our next meeting," said Crenshaw with a touch of disdain. And with Fuerman back, obviously the Pirates will be ready.

TOURNEY NOTES: St. Charles will play Kirkwood, a 58-38 victor over Riverview Gardens last night, in the DeSmet semifinals tonight at 8:45. Central and DeSmet will meet in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. NCAA Probation Lifted For Gophers ST.

PAUL, Dec. 2 (AP) A federal judge today directed the National Collegiate Athletic Association to lift its probation on the University of Minnesota men's athletic teams. United States District Judge Edward Devitt also temporarily enjoined the NCAA from imposing further sanctions until a hearing. The NCAA had said that Minnesota's failure to declare three basketball players ineligible warranted probation for the entire men's sports program. The probation included no postseason games or television appearances.

The alleged infractions by the three players were among more than 100 found by the NCAA and the university after the Gopher basketball program under coach Bill Musselman was investigated in the summer of 1975. The Big Ten Conference placed the Gopher basketball program on probation, and that penalty was not being contested inthis case. against the Pirates' makeshift frontline. He scored 25 points, pulled down 22 rebounds and blocked six shots and, if it hadn't been for some sloppy play by the Indians' guards, the 6-6 leaper would have led U. City to an upset in their season opener.

The Indians had roared to a 51-39 lead with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter. James was totally dominating the game, either scoring after lob passes or setting up second shots with rebounds. It looked as if there was no way the much-ballyhooed Pirates would be able to survive without Fuerman. But thc-c Keith Hollander popped a jump shot for St. Charles and, seconds later, Kenn Stoehner outmuscled two U.

City forwards and stuffed in another basket at the buzzer ending the third quarter. The Indians' lead had been cut to eight going into the final quarter. U. City got it back to 10 on a couple of free throws. But St.

Charles had found a way to stop James keep the ball in the backcourt via the press. Hollander and Stoehner, two 6-foot senior guards, worked Wacker's press to perfection for the rest of the game. They had the U. City guards looking like confused aliens in a Chinese puzzle factory. And Hollander had the hot hand.

With 2:39 remaining, he gave St. Charles its first lead by popping a long jumper. James hit two free throws and swished a turnaround jumper to keep U. City temporarily in the game, but Hollander clinched it for St. Charles by hitting four straight free throws.

Hollander, an ice man in the clutch, scored 10 consecutive points in the Pirates' decisive drive in the fourth quarter. Hollander scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half. Stoehner, an All-State guard last season, added 16 for the Pirates. "You've got to give St. Charles credit," said U.

City coach Ed Crenshaw. "They kept their composure and came back." backs, considered to be strong contenders for the Southwest Conference championship, outlasted Southwest, 72-71, at Springfield. Bone, a S-foot-11 senior guard from Collinsville, hit IS of 23 field-goal attempts and 12 of 15 free throws as he fell only two points short of the school single-game record. He set the mark two years ago against Indiana State-Evansville. Hubert Hoosman scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Rolandis Nash scored 17 and had 11 rebounds for UMSL, which is now 1-1. Western Illinois slipped to 0-4. UMSL's Rivermen held a 47-44 lead at halftime and the game remained close for another five minutes before the winners spurted to a 75-60 lead with 9 minutes remaining.

But the Leathernecks came back on the shooting of forward Gary Lorenz and reserve guard Dave Morgan to gain an 86-86 tie before Bone went to the foul line for the last time to settle matters. Lorenz finished with 20 points, scoring 16 of them in the second half, and Morgan scored 18, nine in each half. The Rivermen will return to action Monday night, when they visit Springfield for a game with Southwest Missouri State which last night nearly pulled a major upset of Arkansas.
