's week Student dumps down 9 hot dogs and emerges a champim The Community Street Dance, sponsored by the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce, turned out to be a great success and the perfect kick-off for the summer. The weather cooperated and people turned out in droves. The addition of a hot dog eating contest drew a large gathering of contestants as well as onlookers. With 17 entrants and better than 75 hot dogs consumed, people had plenty to gawk at. The contestants, all of who made a donation of $20 to the Coon Creek Country Days Festival for the right to vie for the $100 prize, had several different strategies.

Some squished and smushed, some added toppings and just chomped like crazy. With just 15 minutes to gobble die goodies, hot dogs were being consumed at a miraculous speed all making the onlookers a bit weary. When all was said and done, the winner, Mark Dedlna, a junior in the 2001-2002 school year, arose a little plumper, but victorious having consumed nine and a half hot dogs! Ed Szydlowski, who emerged just a quarter of a hot dog short of victory, looks forward to next year's competition and unseating the winner of Jeanne Holzkamp Hampshire the first official hot dog eating contest of the Community Street Dance. The hot dog eating contest, sponsored by Grumpies, Lydo's, Gordon Foods, Creekside Marathon, Turano and Pepsi will most likely become a much anticipated event for next year's street dance. Congratulations to all the contestants and thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for ordering up such wonderful weather and putting the whole event on for the community.

What's next you How about the preparations for the Coon Creek Country Days Festival to be held this year Aug. 2-5 at Bruce Ream Park, or how about preparations for the 125th anniversary celebration for the Village of Hampshire? While committees are getting events lined up to pique your curiosity, here's a sneak peak. The Coon Creek Country Days Festival will be adding an Army Obstacle Course, Jessie White Tumblers and Fenderskirts to name a few. There also will be the favorites: Rick Saucedo, the talent show, chorus fireworks and the world renowned (Hampshire renowned anyway!) sweet corn boil run by Mavnard Petersen himself at the helm of his steam engine. Welcome back again, Maynard! As for the 125th anniversary celebrations tentatively scheduled, here's a small peak.

The first event will be held July 18 with the opening of the time capsule that was buried in East Park during the village's centennial celebration in 1976. There will be historic memorabilia set up in the old Card and Candle Shop on State Street and tours of historic homes here in Hampshire to mention a few. With these as just the beginning, it will be hard to wait, but we can't give you all the great details just yet, but stay tuned for more information in following columns! Anyone wishing to submit memorabilia for temporary use, may call Roger Paddock at (847) 683-9897 or the village hall at (847) 683-2181 for information on where to bring the items to be used.
