(News-Herald Photo) The Year This special salute to the Del Rio Rams football team recognizes a group of football players from every section of the community, including Laughlin AFB. Banded together in one school district, the 1973 squad rolled up an envious record of winning its district title on six straight victories and ending their regular season play with a highly commendable 9-1 record. Then they dropped a 35-7 decision to the formidable Churchill Chargers of San Antonio in the bi-district bout is beside the point here.

The squad, besides taking the District 32-AAAA trophy and title out of San Antonio for the first time since the league's inception, gained renown for their record of not allowing a single regular season touchdown by rushing. The main forte of the champion Rams was their excellent conditioning, a tribute to their own personal dedication and to an off-season weight program initiated by head coach Claude Fest. Through nine of the first 10 games it was Del Rio's perseveranceandsuperior conditioning which permitted the Queen City crew to come off of the gridiron with the most points at game's end. Molded together with unselfish motives the squad made adjustments when injuries sidelined as many as two starters for a couple of contests and kept the Ram momentum going. It was a rewarding season to a year's work which actually began during last spring's workouts.

Built on the experience of a host of seniors the Ram unit put together the best squad to represent this community since the 1965 Wftdcat crew won the district. The 28 seniors who leave this year's fine squad are to be complimented for the example they set both on the practice field and in actual competition. The underclassmen who return for the coming year will find it easier to become die leaders because of their association with the grid members of the Class of '73. It might be said that this year's crew ignited the consolidated spark which may be destined to become a Del Rio dynasty among the district seeking teams of die future. Thus, die News-Herald joins in with die rest of die community in saluting a fine team and a fine group of young men the 1973 Rams.
