It more profitable not to sell those movies to TV. Walt Disney studios has put a large number of its fea-" ture films in the same classic category. The feature length cartoons, "Pinocchio," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and 'Fantasia" aren't seen on television. They're released periodically to new audiences of children who have the price of admission.

"Song of the South," which Disney made in 1946, is in St. Louis again. I went to see it, and thought about whether it deserved the classic status the Disney people had awarded it. "Song of the South" was much as I remembered it from one of its re-releases during my childhood. It was the first film in which film was blended with animated film an actor playing Uncle Remus sings to a cartoon bluebird on his shoulder.

The animation is Disney-beautiful, and the mixed media technique is effective. Perhaps because children are more willing to suspend belief, techniques in children's films are often more adventurous. THE MOVIE is based on the stories of Joel Chandler Harris, which we're told at the outset are "rich in simple truths, forever fresh and new." The best fables are that, but not many of the Br'er Rabbit stories are the best of fables. Br'er Rabbit, after all, is a wise guy, expert at lying and deception. This, the stories say, is because he's a little guy and has to learn to use his head.

His adversary, Br'er Fox, is a mean predator, assisted by Br'er Bear, a stupid sadist. So much for the characters. The, situations are a little better. In the first cartoon sequence', Br'er Rabbit tries to run away from troubleonly to return to his Briar Patch, affirming that "You can't run away from trouble. There ain't no place that far." The last story gives Br'er Rabbit pleasure at the expense of the fox and the bear who are menaced by stinging bees, but its moral, that everyone has a laughing place, a place that makes them happy, is pleasant enough.

THE BR'ER RABBIT tales are woven into a story about a poor little rich boy visiting his grandmother's plantation where his chief enemy is his uptight mother and his best friend is the story-telling Uncle Remus. Forget that Uncle Remus is a child-like Niggrah from Hollywood's old days. The happy ending comes about thanks to the boy's run-in with a bull. When he regains consciousness all his loved ones, including the father who had left his mother (and who could blame him) are gathered round the bed and he gets his way. This should teach any kids who don't already know it that everyone feels sorry for you when you're sick and spoils you.

Maybe we have different values for children than for adults. Adults want to deal with issues, situations and ideas they consider new. Yesterday's morality on film becomes as old hat as yesterday's old hat on an actress, and the old movies are banished to the late show. But children, we seem to be saying, should still value and learn the lessons given in 1946. Adult nostalgia spills over.

We want kids to see the same movies that we did, to learn from them and love them as we did. What's forgotten is that the movies may not be so good as we remember, and may be out of step with today's children. Criticism of the junk labeled children's television has brought about some change. Children also deserve better fare in movie theaters than ersatz classics. ADULTS $2.95 S1.25 SUN.
