Fears 'Socialization' Of Housing Industry SAN Calif. (AP) The new pres ident of the National Associati on of Real Estate Boards says 1 local action is needed to prevent Federal Government control und "socialization" of the housing industry. "Where zoning? laws are working against the common good, let us make ti hem work by local action; where: the lowincome family seen 15 to be squeezed out of an opportunity for housing, let us see that it gets that opportunity by action," William N. Brown said. In his inaugural address, the Albuquerque, N.M., realtor 'old more than 1500 directors atten d- ing the association's a a meeting they must become more active in political matters "to fight for what we need." "The way it is," Brown asserted, "if a member of a federal agency gets out of the wrong side of the bed some morning, decisions could be made that could put half of us out of business." Department of Housing and Safeco Insurance Begins New Building Safeco Insurance Companies broke ground recently for a central division headquarters building on the southwest corner of Highway 66 and Geyer Road in Sunset Hills.

Mrs. Urban Development officials, he noted, have recently warned that unless local leaders change their attitude about low-income housing, the Government may withhold grants for water and sewer lines. Brown said housing once again would provide a boost to the general economy. To support the nation's need for more and better housing, he suggested more effort be put into restoration and modernization of older homes. an average year, two to three times as many buyers obtain an existing house as those who buy a new home," Brown said.

"This year we expect about 2,250,000 existing homes to change ownership." Reminding his audience that the Federal Government has indicated would take over unless private enterprise solves the housing problem within five years, Brown urged prompt action to prevent what he termed the "complete socialization of the industry." "We cannot wait four and a half years to sound the alarm," he said. "We cannot wait four and a half years to meet the challenge now is the time." LOUIS POST- DISPATCH 8 Manson Punches Attorney LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29 (UPI) Charles M. Manson punched his attorney and bragged yesterday that he could tear the prosecutor to pieces as a murder trial jury began he a in testimony regarding the punishment of Manson and three young women. The four defendants have been convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of actress Sharon Tate and six other persons. Manson was hauled from the courtroom with his arms pinioned at his sides shortly after the first witness took the stand in the penalty phase of the trial.

His attorney, Irving Kanarek, objected to the appearance of Bernard (Lotsapoppa) Crowe, who Manson allegedly shot a month before the killings in August 1969. It was one of literally hundreds of objections by Kanarek. When the objection was made, Manson turned in his seat, punched Kanarek on the arm and shoved him. Superior Court Judge Charles H. Older had Manson taken to an adjoining holding room, where he continued to shout to Kanarek "Shut up." Manson was angered by Older's earlier refusal of another demand that he be permitted to act as his own attorney and conduct his own defense in the penalty phase of the trial.

He continued to argue with the judge, and Older advised him to sit down "in your own best interests." "My own best interests?" said Manson. "You've already convicted me for something I didn't do." Then he turned toward Deputy District Attorney Vincent Bugliosi, who had prosecuted Manson, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten and Susan Atkins in the seven-month-long trial. "You leave me alone in the courtroom and I'll tear that little boy (Bugliosi) to pieces," he said. "And you know it." Crowe, an admitted dealer in marijuana, said Mans on shot him in the stomach in a Hollywood apartment in July 1969, after a dispute over marijuana. Another defense lawyer, Paul Fitzgerald, sought in vain yesterday to reopen the case with a plea of a it for Miss Krenwinkel.

Older ruled it was far too late for such a move. Kanarek, seeking an investigation of the jury, contended that in the boredom of being locked up during the trial one woman juror had "turned to alcohol." Older rejected the motion and ordered the trial to proceed. Delinquency Is Linked To Nation's Values Much of the blame of juvenile deliquency can be traced to the corporate values system of the country, Southern Illinois University psychiatrist said last night. Dr. Philip H.

Dennis, addressing the Metropolitan Youth Commission, said, "The country was born on financial interest and the values of our country are financial values values of making money and stressing property rights over human rights." Many aspects of American life have taken a back seat to this financial interest, which sometimes leads to corruption, he said. Dennis said an individual should not be judged as a success unless he included components in his life style that invalidated "color, the dollar bill and property rights over human rights. A healthy person is one whose life meets these components, one who learns to love the differences as well as the common elements of his fellow man." Pair Sentenced In Weatherman Case CHICAGO, Jan. 29 (UPI) Linda Sue Evans, 23 years old, and John Rollins, 22, were sentenced yesterday to three years on probation and three months in jail after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated battery, resisting arrest and mob action in the 1969 Weatherman riots. Miss Evans, Fort Dodge, pleaded guilty also to another mob action charge and was sentenced to another term, which will run concurrently with the first.

Criminal Court Judge Richard J. Fitzgerald told Miss Evans she would spend her three-month sentence in the Cook County Jail. Rollins, Riegelwood, S. has already spent three months in prison awaiting trial and will be released. Island Holiday For Nixons WASHINGTON, Jan.

Nixon will go by helicopter to a bungalow at the Caneels Bay Plantation resort on the island of St. John. They are expected to return to Washington early next week. TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY SUBURBAN -UNFUR. 117 FERGUSON FERMO.
