Call 522-3587 or JA 4-4770. THOMAS Realtors. to survive the first winter. By RAY ROTHENBERGER Extension Horticulturist, University of Missouri The hardiness of shrubs, trees and other perennial plants is important to gardener. Everyone knows certain plants that survive the winter with no difficulty, but gardeners may be uncertain about unfamiliar plants.

The country has been divided into hardiness zones based on expected minimum annual temperatures. Plants can be classed according to the zone that is the northern limit of their adaptability. Hardiness is closely tied to three things temperature, rainfall and soil. Rainfall and soil can be manipulated to some extent by cultural practices such as fertilizing, watering or adding organic materials. Temperature, however, cannot be controlled.

It becomes the most important a in plant survival in many cases. Minimum temperatures usually cause the greatest stress on plants. An examination of evergreen plants now, such as some broadleaved types, will sh.v how great the winter stress has been. By this time of a marginal leaf browning, may be evident. If this can be seen, the plant may not be well adapted or was in a weakened condition during the past summer or fall.

It may need additional winter protection or some culture correction in the future. A plant hardiness zone map has been prepared by the United States National Arboretum, Department of Agriculture, in co-operation with the American Horticultural Society. The map shows expected minimum temperatures throughout the United States. The country is divided into 10 zones, each with a 10-de-gree temperature differential. Three of these hardiness zones 5, 6 and 7 pass through Missouri.

The southern boundary of Zone 5 runs through the state slightly north of the Missouri River. In the eastern part of the state this zone swings north along the Mississippi to about Lewis County. Zone 5 applies also to some of the areas in the state with high eleva-" tions. Most of the rest of Missouri is covered by Zone 6. 613, A.F.&A.M. J-b rimes (consecutive) 74c 87c This approach is common in countries with much higher rates of inflation than the U.S. In the past, lenders have been reluctant to adopt a variable-interest mortgage because of borrower resistance to increases in their monthly payments if the prevailing interest rate increases. However, Rose points out, the device need not work this way. If interest rates increase, the monthly payment might remain the same, but more of the payment would go for interest and less for principal and the life of the mortgage would be extended.

On the the other hand, if adjustable mortgages were in effect today, families that mort-gaged at 8'2 per cent six months ago, might be paying back on a 7 per cent loan today. Has Advantages The adjustable mortgage ap-i proach, Rose says, has three advantages as a measure for funneling money into the housing market. It would make savings institutions more willing to make home mortgages during tight-money periods, because they 7. 8. 9 or lu Times (consecutive) for the price of 6 Times.

Norman Pellett, ornamental horticulturist with the University of Vermont Extension Service, says sugar maple and the American elm have surface roots which steal moisture from the shrubs, as do large evergreens. combat this, he advises mixing peat with the soil around shrubs to help retain moisture.

The higher the mixture of peat and soil, the higher the chances of survival, he says. For shrubs directly under large trees, twice-a-week watering may be necessary, particularly in midsummer, he says. Yews need good moisture for growth but they can grow well in the shade, Pellett says. MISSOURI Steel Wire Co. 1406 N.
