14 A Apr. 16, 1970 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Nol Urges Ridding Cambodia Of All Vietnamese France had furnished military assistance to a i a for years but that Cambodia had not formally requested emergency aid. In Washington the Department of State said the United States was examining the request for military assistance. Officials said the request was for such things as guns and am- munition and not for troops.

Press officer Robert J. Mc-Closkey said he had no details on the request and refused to provide any information on what kind of arms or ammunition the Cambodians might want. Rhodesian Leader SALISBURY, Rhodesia, April 16 (UPI) Clifford DuPont, a former London lawyer, took the oath of office today and became the first president of the Rhodesian republic. baur has informed the chiefs of diplomatic missions here of the Cambodian government's a p-peal for arms assistance to repel a Vietnamese Communist invasion. The United States charge d'affaires, Lloyd M.

Rives, was among the first to be invited to the ministry yesterday. The diplomats were given a copy of the statement read earlier over the radio by Premier Lon Nol. It declared Cambodia's readiness to receive arms and equipment from any country provided it was given without conditions. Information Minister i Hoan said in an interview that France had indicated its readiness to furnish assistance and that the issue had been discussed with American diplomats here. However, neither French nor American sources confirmed this.

French Assistance French diplomats said that Neak Leung said the Viet Cong had markedly increased their forces along the river in the past two weeks and were planning to block the crossing at Nea': Leung. He said the enemy had at least eight recoilless rifles positioned along the 28 miles of river between the crossing and the Vietnam border to the south. The Cambodian spokesman said Vietnamese villagers along the river banks were being armed by Viet Cong infiltrators and were taking regular sniper shots at the patrols. Although 200 Cambodian troops still occupy the Mekong's west bank near the i a frontier, the spokesman said, all towns up to the Neak Leuog crossing belonged to the Viet Cong. The only road leading down the west bank from the crossing is controlled by Viet Cong, he said.

Like the hundreds that passed there yesterday, the bodies had bullet wounds in several places and the hands of many were bound. Foreign sources in Phnom Penh said about 600 Vietnamese men were arrested early Monday in the village of Xon Bien, near the Cambodian capital, loaded on boats an dtaken away. Crossing Threatened Cambodian control of the Neak Leung crossing is threatened by Viet Cong troops who have occupied a river town six miles to the south and are using 75-millimeter recoilless rifles to protect their new positions. The commander of a Cambodian flotilla of gunboats operating on the river said his boats were under constant fire from both banks during patrols.

A military spokesman at geant there said the bodies might be Communist soldiers shot by Cambodian military units when trying to cross the river upstream. A government spokes man said the bodies apparently were Vietnamese collaborators with the Viet Cong who were killed by angry Cambodians. Army Spokesman A Cambodian Army spokesman said he knew nothing about the bodies. He said the killing of Vietnamese civilians in Cambodia "could be considered punitive actions because of Viet Cong attacks in Cambodia. "We, the Cambodians of the present generation, responsible for the destiny of Cambodia, are witnessing the renewal of the secular expansionism of the Vietnamese imperialists," 1 said. Organization Urged "In order to evict the enemy from the country, the government makes this pressing appeal to all Cambodians, future citizens of the Cambodian republic, to organize in groups to defend energetically with every means our soil." His reference to the Cambodian republic was in line with government plans to declare the country a republic and end its status as a kingdom, which would thwart Sihanouk's claim to power on a basis of royalty.

The bodies in the Mekong River floated from the burned village of Lompong Phnom east of this capital. A police ser Ml America's Fastest Growing APRIL 18. 'Drug Chain Po.t I'lspntoh WIr Srrvlre. PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, April 16 Premier Lon Nol last night urged Cambodian to take whatever action necessary to rid the country of all "Vietnamese imperialists." His appeal, broadcast nationwide on Radio Cambodia, came within hours after hundreds of bodies were sighted in the Mekong River downstream from a village of Vietnamese settlers. Cambodian army troops captured the village and burned it fqur days ago.

Since ousting Prince Norodom Sihanouk as chief of state four weeks ago, Nol has issued appeals and summoned rallies designed to arouse Cambodians to drive out Viet Cong and North Vietnamese military groups that have long used the country as a sanctuary from the war in South Vietnam.
