NOV 2 1 1982 Nov. 2i, 1982 5F ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH sports Former ridder Bees Nope For Quadriplegics 1 ws I ff hi it i II I. 1 i ii if HP: "The United States has the technology, the facilities and the scientific expertise to conquer the problem of regeneration in the central nervous system," he said. A touching example of the nation's technology was displayed recently In Dayton, Ohio, where Nan Davis, a 22-year-old senior at Wright State University from St.

Mary's, Ohio, who had been paralyzed for 4'i vears following an automobile accident, took five halting steps. Davis' leg muscles were stimulated by computer-generated electrical impulses. "It was fantastic," she said. "The dream of every paralyzed person is to walk again," said Dr. George Wayloris, director of physical medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

"All of them think they will "If we can develop technology, we will solve this problem in the next 10 years," said Waldrep. "If you compare spinal cord injuries to football, the defense has been on the field for all 60 minutes. We're trying to put together an offense that can throw the long bomb." lit II "ii nim i Jji -f a is" i) IE i II lb III Waldrep was hit by three Alabama players, and was sent flying into the air when hit in the legs from behind. "The next thing I remember is the turf coming at me and then a sensation that will always be with me," he said. "At the moment my head hit the artificial turf, I sensed I was upside down and then floating in a horizontal position.

Then there was nothing. It was as if my head had been amputated from the rest of my body." Waldrep, 20 at the time of the crippling injury, was rushed to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Afterward, doctors determined that Waldrep would be a quadriplegic, confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. "I was told my condition was hopeless, that I was permanently paralyzed and that I should give up hope of ever walking again," he said. But Waldrep was determined to improve his condition.

He learned of the Polenov Neurosurgery Research Institute in Leningrad, U.S.S.R., and went there in 1978 for rehabilatative treatment that included "walking" sessions in a special walker a treatment unheard of in the United States. The treatments resulted in Waldrep making substantial improvements in his arm and hand functions, along with the return of sensation to his lower body. Now, he still needs assistance with most daily activities, but he can drive a specially made van and engage in other small functions that were impossible in the past. "And one day I hope to walk," he said. "1 don't intend to spend another eight years in this wheelchair." To reach that incredible goal, after such a devastating injury, Waldrep is counting on modern technology.

By Bert Rosenthal AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) Spinal cord injuries have struck down such athletes as Roy Campanella, Darryl Stingley, Ron Turcotte, Jill Kinmont Booth and Landon Turner, and celebrities like Gov. George Wallace of Alabama and singer Teddy Pendergrass. Yet former football player Kent Waldrep, a quadriplegic, says the public is basically unaware of the problems faced by spinal cord victims. "There just hasn't been enough concern in this country for people with spinal cord injuries," Waldrep said in a telephone interview from the American Paralysis Association in Dallas. "They're just written off.

"The public is very uneducated about spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone. It isn't a disease. "People in wheelchairs are lumped into one category. But some can have muscular dystrophy, some can have polio, some can have spinal cord injuries," added Waldrep, founder and executive vice president of the assocation.

"Spinal cord injuries affect a half-million Americans." Waldrep, a one-time running back for Texas Christian University, became a spinal cord victim during a game against Alabama Oct. 26, 1974. He remembers the dreadful moment vividly. "The score was 7-0 Alabama, with 514 minutes left in the first half," Waldrep said. "The play came in from our bench: red right power 28.

It meant I was to get the ball on a sweep around our right end." But the Alabama defense diagnosed the play perfectly, "so my decision was to lower my shoulder and try to gain as many yards as I could muscle," said Waldrep. He was 97. In two separate tenures at SMU, the second one ending in 1934, Morrison compiled an 84-44-22 record. This included the school's first unbeaten, untied season in 1923. During Morrison's years at SMU, the forward pass became an accepted offensive weapon, and when the Mustangs used the pass to win a Southwest Conference title in 1926, Morrison' teams were billed as the "Aerial Circus."
