From time to time the men could see rabbits darting beneath the tangle of multiflora rose along the fence. Suddenly, a rabbit bolted from the brush ahead of the man on the left and ran back toward him outside the weeds.

Had the man been hunting rabbits, he easily could have bagged the bunny as it passed almost beneath his feet and ran down the muddy track before disappearing back into the A few seconds later another rabbit pulled the same stunt. Then another bunny came out of the weeds and crouched momentarily in the open not 10 feet from the man before running past him along the same path taken by the others. Then another rabbit passed within a few feet of him as it ran through the weeds in the fence row. Within a period of not more than a minute or so, the man saw seVen or eight rabbits. The man on the opposite side of the fence saw several more.

All came out of the brush, ran past the men and then got back into the brush. It was obvious to the men that as they worked along the fence row, they had pushed the rabbits ahead for some distance. Rabbits are reluctant to get too far from their and found but two coveys. AU the hunters reached said that most of the coveys they found were fairly large. And all the hunters said that many of the birds are young.

"That's pretty unusual, finding birds too young to fly well in December," one hunter said. "We've seen whole cove with birds too little to shoot." Those young birds and the unfavorable weather gets much of the blame for the poor dog work. Young quail ae prone to be wild. And quail often are unmannerly when they are wet or when it's windy. Ken Sadler, veteran upland biologist of the Missouri Department of Conservation, said reports indicated that the rabbit population was extremely high some places.

"I've gotten several reports from people who have found dead rabbits," he said. "In most cases the rabbits have beei found crouched, dead as a hammer. "In all cases I've found that they died of stress apparently brought on when too many rabbits Art concentrated in a small area." Sadler said that such mortality isn't unusual durjpg periods of high rabbit populations. The stress generally is brought on when the harvesting of crops, such as soybeans, reduces the habitat and forces rabbits into areas already occupied by rabbits. good or excellent this season.

Many hunters think it could get better as the season progresses and more soft cover is knocked down. But at the Busch Wildlife Area, where there are one or two beagle trials a week, the rabbit population appears to be no better than average. Perley Cassady, area manager, said that trialers have been complaining mildly about a dearth of rabbits on the area, where habitat conditions are excellent. And rabbit hunters "have been bagging a lot of zeros," Cassady said, "though the hunters with good dogs who know how to hunt have been getting limits of four pretty regularly." The season at Busch is open Monday through Friday this month. Quail hunting in has been good, apparently, though there have been some complaints about poor dog work.

And the weather has been less than ideal with many windy or wet days. One group of men, who hunt near Macon, reported having several eight- and nine-covey days. For most quail hunters, anything better than five coveys per day is considered excellent. Another group went through most of November with no hunt producing fewer than three coveys. Then, in the last two hunts of the month, they were hampered by bad weather home range.

So apparently these bunnies had been pushed as far as they would go and had decided they would risk running past the men to get back home. On the same hunt, the men stood and watched their dogs enter a clump of trees in another fence row. Rabbits came running out of the clump in all directions. Had the men been hunting rabbits, it would have been a short hunt. They could have bagged their limits of six apiece in less than an hour.

That experience was a bit unusual, of course, but the men have seen many rabbits in most of their hunts this season. Their hunts have taken place as close as St. Charles and Franklin counties and as far away as Pike, Ste. Genevieve and Callaway counties. Other rabbit and quail hunters generally report the same kind of experience.
