ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH SUNDAY, MARCH 25,1990 QU Memorial Set Curators OK Increase In Fees To Buy Computers At UMSL 12D The University of Missouri's board of curators has approved a higher fee schedule to help buy computers at the St. Louis campus. The fee for each credit hour will be $2.50 in the fall, $3 for the winter 1991 semester and $3.50 for the summer 1991 semester. In January, the board approved a systemwide "instructional computing fee" of $2 for each credit hour, to begin this summer.

Officials of the University of Missouri at St. Louis asked that their fee be gradually Increased. The curators approved the increase and even lower for Big Ten and Bjg Eight schools, he said. i "We set a goal on campus of one computer for every 10 full-time students by 1995," Jones said. He said the computers would be added to the libraries first and then to new computer labs.

Friday. M. Thomas Jones, deputy to the chancellor at UMSL, said a study late last year Indicated that the university system as a whole had one computer for each 26 students and that UMSL alone had one computer for each 40 students. The average ratio nationally is one computer for each 10 students A r- iA' --v sX FUNERAL NOTICES For Girl, 8, 5Tio Collapsed By Joan Little 9f the Post-Dispatch Staff memorial fund to plant trees and fljwers has been set up for Mary To-tfln, the 8-year-old girl who died Thursday a short time after collapsing tfr her school classroom. jtDonations will be used to plant flowery and trees in Mary's memory, said aunt, Martha Tobin.

The growth of Wang Laboratories took off in 1964 after he introduced a desktop calculator and began development of office computers. Once rated the fifth-richest man in America, Mr. Wang spread jobs to other areas, and the company now has about 23,000 employees worldwide. His wife, Lorraine, sons Fred and Courtney and daughter, Juliette, had been at his hospital bedside regularly during his hospitalization, according to company spokesman Paul Guzzi. Mr.

Wang turned the company's presidency over to his son, Fred, at a time when the computer industry was entering a time of difficulty. Fred Wang later stepped down, but Mr. Wang continued as chief executive officer. The company last year reported bank debt totaling $575 million, according to Guzzi, but a retrenchment and sale of assets cut that to less than $100 million. Mr.

Wang's philanthropy extended to support for education and the arts, including development of the new Wang Center for the Performing Arts in Boston. cancer. He was 70. wang Hospital spokesman Martin Bander said Mr. Wang "was operated on originally on July 14 of last year for esophageal cancer, a very difficult form of cancer.

He was admitted to the Mass General cancer center on March 6 after suffering some setback." Mr. Wang began Wang Laboratories in 1951 above an electrical fixtures store in Boston with a work force of one: himself. went on to develop the magnetic core, a small doughnut-shaped ring of iron that was the basic element of computer memory until the microchip was introduced in the late 1960s.
