"combination rooms considered two rooms, ' ' residential only. Movies U, FROM PAGE FOUR Rutger Hauer, so effective in "Soldier of Orange," makes his American debut in the part, and he's sensational. He shows impersonal evil in brilliant style, and he exudes a chill that would make air-conditioning unnecessary on the warmest day. Hauer, who is intro duced as he plants z bomb in London, loses his effectiveness when his picture is found on the body of a courier he has murdered. So he goes to Paris for plastic surgery, then heads for New York to show his former bosses that he still can bring a city to its knees. His traveling partner, equal ly cold-blooded, is Persis Khambatta. She has hair this time. after appearing as the clean-shaven visitor from another planet and navigator in "Star Trek the Motion Picture." Scotland Yard's Nigel Davenport follows Hauer to New York, and begins teaching the New York cops how to combat him. Of course, Stallone and Williams soon get their own ideas, and things go on from there to a series of splendid New York scenes in the subways, at the Met ropolitan Museum of Art and on an aenal tram way to Roosevelt Island in the East River. "Nighthawks" is a basic, elemental film, and that's one of its strengths. Director Bruce Malmuth, in his feature debut, allows David Shaber s screen play to run smoothly and he features the action and the dramatic setting, without resorting to a lot of camera trickery or nonsense. He realizes that he has a good story, and he leaves it alone. The result is a film that is exciting and fast paced, with both Stallone and Williams handling the action roles in first- rate style. Davenport, as always, comes across well, and then there's Hauer, who gives the film a slightly different and winning dimension. Street and police lan guage, and lots of vio lence, are the causes of the rating. (Running time: 1 hour, 40 minutes. Rating, R. At the Cinema IV, Ellisville, Halls Ferry, South County) fables of the famous By E.E. Edgar UUZY DEAN, the pitching ace of the St. Louis Cardinals, got a kick out of trying to intimidate the opposition. The day before St. Louis ,was to face Detroit in the opener of the 1934 World Series, Dean was at the ball park, watching the Tigers take batting practice. After a while, he stepped up to the plate and took the bat from the hands of Mickey Cochrane, the Detroit player-manager. He walloped the next pitch deep into the outfield. Then he turned and gave the bat back to Cochrane. 'And I'm the worst hit ter on the team," he said modestly, as he walked away. SENATOR WILLIAM E. BORAH was not one to waste time on idle chitchat. When he came home in the evening, he would, after greeting his wife, go straight to his study and busy himself with his papers. He would come out for dinner when called and later, would return to his study. One evening, when he came home, he found Mrs. Borah entertaining guests. He stopped at the door, gave them a quick hello, and went to his study, as usual. After a while, he felt the pangs of hunger and he came out to inquire why dinner was late. Mrs. Borah, who had just said goodbye to her guests, replied: "It's your own fault that it's late. If you hadn't been so gabby, they would have left earlier." As a boy, composer CHARLES IVES was kept so busy with his musical studies that he had little time to spend with his sports-minded friends. Ives, who loved sports, longed to be with them. Once, after he had given a performance for his parents' friends, he was asked: ' "What do you like to play most, young man?" He replied without hesitation: "Shortstop."
