The St Charles Post July 8, 1980 7 SC Carlton 'Incredible' With Philadelphia, But He Still Won't Talk To Reporters Big Red Camp Opens July 1 8 announced next week. The fight for positions should be toughest in the defensive line. In the recent draft the Cardinals selected five defensive linemen, including No. 1 selection Curtis Greer of the University of Michigan. Greer is expected to play the right defensive end position, a spot held most of last year by Mike Dawson.

This season, Dawson will be switched to noseguard, a position he played last year before moving to end when John Zook was injured. for. The football Cardinals open their training camp July 18 at The Llndenwood Colleges field. Approximately 80 players will attend SO veterans, 12 recent draft choices and about 20 free agents. Players will begin arriving at the Lindenwood dormitories July 16 and will be given physicals July Kay Burnett, the Cardinals publicist, said that morning and afternoon practices will be open to the public.

Burnett said times for those practice sessions will be Want house a buyer for your or mobile home? PHILADELPHIA (AP) Stand the Philadelphia Phillies' Steve Carlton in front of a group of fans and he'll answer questions until there aren't anymore from the audience. He will stay and give autographs until the last paper and pen disappears. But let a reporter approach Carlton and the pitcher becomes mute. The 34-year-old lefthander makes it clear he wants no contact with the media. Carlton's reluctance to share his feelings with the people who write and talk about the team never was more evident than in St.

Louis Sunday when the Phillies won 8-3. He struck out his batter of a 15-year career, more than any lefthander in the history of baseball. That includes a lot of superb pitchers such as Mickey Lolich, the man whose record Carlton eclipsed. He did step out of the dugout to acknowledge an ovation by the fans after he struck out Tony Scott to set the record. But after the game, it was the same.

He stayed away from the media. There was no communication. Only Carlton, his teammates and intimate friends know what the accomplishment meant to him. Carlton is 14-4, and could be headed for his third Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the National League. Even in defeat this season, the Phillies' pitcher hasn't worked what could be described as a bad game.

He's been strong and silent. He concentrates on his job. He shows little or no visible emotion, win or lose. The career strikeout record was another in a growing list of achievements. He holds the modern National League record of six one-hitters.

He's in the top 10 for active pitchers in most categories such as games started, wins, strikeouts, innings pitched. Before this season only Baltimore's Jim Palmer and Texas' Gaylord Perry have recorded more victories in the last decade. The question is why won't Carlton talk with the media? Since he won't talk, the answer can only be conjecture. It is known that he believes he has been misquoted. He allegedly feels his personal life has been placed under a microscope.

He is upset with at least one reporter for allegedly barging in on a private beach party in spring training. Carlton wasn't always that way. In St. Louis, where he started his major league career, and later when traded to Philadelphia (1972), his rapport with 1 S- AP Best Lefty of Philadelphia Phillies, letting one fly over the plate, became the all-time left-handed strikeout champ of baseball Sunday at Busch Stadium, when he fanned Tony Scott of the Cards in the fourth inning. The out gave Carlton 2,833 strikeouts, the record for a left-handed pitcher.

Carlton was adamant. The only interview with Carlton in the last three years was one done on the subject of wine, on which the pitcher fancies himself as somewhat of an expert. When the same reporter went back and tried to talk baseball with the pitcher, he was turned away. The club insists it can't make Carlton talk, yet his contract supposedly contains a provision on promotion for the club and cooperation and 22, with Dick Enberg doing the blow-by-blow and Pacheco handling the commentary along with guest announcer Sugar Ray Leonard, former World Boxing Council welterweight champion. "The broadcasting of a fight is fun," said Ferdie.

"It's like going to a dance on Saturday night. The bad part is booking the fight. Promoters' options are a big problem," he said of the practice in which a promoter gets an option from a fighter for a specified number of bouts. The good doctor then launched into an account of how he lined up the three Friday fights. Plans were to present light heavyweight Mike Spinks and Jerry Martin Aug.l, middleweights Curtis Parker and Mustafa Hamsho Aug.8, and a World Boxing Association super lightweight title bout between champion Antonio Cervantes and Aaron Pryor.

But the Cervantes-Pryor fight went elsewhere, leaving Aug. 22 open. Promoters Don King, Butch Lewis and Russell Peltz got intangled and the Spinks-Martin fight was out. King is involved with Martin, who also is involved with Peltz. Spinks is tied to Lewis, which reportedly is why King didn't want the fight.

So Pacheco tried to book a super welterweight bout between Tony Chiaverini and Wilfred Benitez, the former WBC welter champ. 21il SCHUETZ RD ST. LOUIS. MO. 03141 172 9595 with the media. Carlton has appeared on postgame radio and television shows with the team's broadcasters and telecasters.

Sometimes, he even shuts them off, including Tim McCarver, who was his catcher for years both in St. Louis and Philadelphia until the receiver retired after last season. "I've reflected on his achievements over the last 10 years and they are incredible," Green has said. "At times, he's been criticized for what he's done on and off the field, but I think most of it is unjustified. In this game, production is the bottom line, and 'Lefty is a producer." said Benitez was committed to fight Luis Resto in the Garden.

Brenner offered heavyweights John Tate, former WBA champ, and Eddie "Animal" Lopez. So, on the Leonard-Roberto Duran card June 20 in Montreal, Trevor Berbick knocked out Tate. Tate landed close to Pacheco, who was doing the commentary for the closed-circut telecast. "We were looking into each other's eyes, except his were partly closed." said Ferdie, "and I thought, 'Does this mean our Aug.l date is Pacheco came up with a solution to the Aug. 1 and Aug.

22 problems in the dead of night. "I woke up one night with a flash in my mind" recalled Ferdie. "The flash was I will give Don King, who has Wilfredo Gomez, Aug.22 with Derek Holmes, if he will step aside for Butch for Martin-Spinks." It was time for Ferdie to hang up he still had more to say, but he had to get back to the screenplay and other things and the Friday night fights shaped up as Spinks-Martin, Parker-Hamsho, and a WBC super bantamweight title defense by Wilfredo Gomez against Holmes. Later Pacheco said Parker-Hamsho and Gomez-Holmes were signed but that Spinks-Martin had fallen through because Peltz had landed Martin a WBA light heavyweight title bid against Eddie Gregory. So, said Cohen, the Aug.l show now will feature Wilfred Benitez and Tony Cervantes in a Madison Square Garden-Top Rank-Caesars Palace co-promotion.

Talk about screenplays. handball. As hand callouses developed, paddles came into use and finally rackets strung with sheep gut. In the Middle Ages, real tennis was played principally by royalty and lonely monks in monasteries. It has defied time.

Now there are only 29 courts in the world, 17 of them in Britain, seven in the United States, three in Australia and two in France. Only a handful of players have mastered the game and the Intricate playing procedure. The Hampton Court Palace Court, where King Henry VIII and later other monarchs played, dates back to 1530. It is the oldest in existence, exceeding by 70 years the Falkland Palace Court in Scotland. Hidden in the catacombs of the sumptuous palace, it is reachable only through the dark corridors reminiscent of the hunchback of Notre Dame.

It is In steady use. They say uniforms from French prisoners of the Napoleonic War were used to make balls for the royal tennis court in the late 1700s and the early 1800s. Legend is that Henry VIII was embroiled in a brisk match when he heard of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn. He finished the game. The physician-artist-author-fight buff is head of boxing for NBC and has put together several successful afternoon bouts for which he has served as commentator. Ferdie knows the fight game and its people. He was Muhammad Ali's doctor for years and worked with Ali and other fighters "doing my Walter Mitty act in the corner." On a recent moming he was on the telephone.

"I'm in Los Angeles," he said, "where I'm working on a screenplay for a Vietnam comedy." He gave a quick outline, but that's another story. The purpose of Ferdie's call was his NBC role the success of this series of afternoon "Crossroads Fights," the problems he has had and the hopes he has for a three-bout package of Friday night fights set for August. "They decided that Friday from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. was the test to prime time boxing," moaned Ferdie, noting that the highly rated "Dallas" appears on CBS in that same Friday time slot.

A good showing in August would make the network get serious about a series of prime time fights Despite Pacheco's qualms, sponsorship for the three August bouts is sold out at the commercial rate of $65,000 to $70,000 for a 30-second spot, according to Mike Cohen, an NBC sports publicist. The three fights would be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Aug. 1, 8 'Real Tennis' By Will Grimsley Of th Associated Press LONDON (AP) If modern tennis players think they have it soft, with all the big money and attention lavished on them these days, they should look back to Henry VIII, England's reigning monarch in the mid-16th Century. Henry, it seems, was quite a card. In his younger days, he was handsome and athletic and, according to historians, was "passionately addicted" to the sport of tennis.

He played every day on his private court in the Hampton Court Palace and, when he was finished, retired to the Beer Cellar where all his courtisans and even the palace commoners got pleasantly loaded on home-brewed ale. That's not all. The king, because he was royalty, never had to serve. Instead, before every match a half-dozen strong-armed young men were lined up behind his majesty and when it came his time to serve he would tum and pick one of the youths. "Service" he would bark.

"That's where the modern term of 'service' came from," explained Chris Ronaldson, 30, the world's open professional champion in real (royal) or Court Tennis, who now teaches the sport on the same court on which Henry yill played more than 44 centuries ago. If he wanted a hard ball served, he might pick one of the youths. If he wanted a tricky slice, he might choose another." This undoubtedly also was the birth of the "designated hitter." Real (or court) tennis is the ancestor of the modern game that turned out not a bit like its bearded old progenitor.

It is played indoors in a huge, barnlike structure with penthouse roofs and intricate targets known as "dedans," grille and rows of little windows. If you hit the right one, a bell rings. The equipment is primitive. The balls are made by hand, with a core and 15 yards of tightly wound webbing molded and sewn into a spherical shape. The rackets are smaller than regular rackets and misshapen so they look as if they've been warped.

Scoring is the same as in lawn tennis 15, 30, 40, ad, deuce, with no concession to Jim Van Alen's tiebreaker system. "Do you know how the scoring developed?" asked Ronaldson. "A match was scored by the hands of the clock 15 for 15 after, 30 for half-past, etc. It really should be 45 but lazy people got to calling it 40."
