Despite being produced by the same compa- ny that does "The Golden "Heartland" will be trying to wring humor out of the distinctly unfunny plight of the American farmer and out of intolerance in the form of Brian Keith's character, a crusty bigot with a heart of gold a la Archie Bunker. In the absence of hard evidence, I'll avoid advance judgments, but; I'm skeptical. 1 No need for skepticism or hesita-! tion on "Live-In" (tonight at 7). With the two-minute exception of a styl- ish opening credit sequence, this show is so blatantly stupid it defies belief. Supposedly intended to cap-' ture the youth audience, "Live-In" i tells of life in the Mathews house-' hold, which consists of newly work-1 ing Mom, always-havlng-worked Dad, teen-ager Danny, pre-teen Pet-; er and baby Melissa.

The catalyst for the show's action is the arrival of supposedly good-; looking but definitely well-built Lisa (Lisa Patrick), a live-in baby-watch-1 er and houseworker. She hails from i where else Australia! G'dai! Mate! Barby! Dundee! i I suppose the producers deserve some credit for having assem-! bled the blandest cast on television, even blander than the Seavers of "Growing Pains," which is no mean feat when you consider that Ma and Pa Seaver are played by Joanna' Kerns and Alan Thicke. Of course, young Danny Mathews (Chris Young) is allowed to have some energy, as is his offensively ignorant best pal, Gator, played by an actor I won't name for the sake of his future career. "Live-In" is another example of i throw-back TV, a kind of teeny-bop-! per's "Tnree's Company" brimming with adolescent double-entendres, a bathroom peephole, people so sur- prised they spit out fluids they've just drunk, and bad jokes about gen-; itals. The folks developing shows at.

CBS' entertainment division better hope this isn't the best they can do. Channel 4 meteorologist Mike Nelson is headed for New! York next Thursday, where he's; supposed to put in one day's duty as substitute for a vacationing Mark; McEwen on "CBS This the network's two-hour weekday broadcast. i CBS confirmed that Nelson is due to return to New York to sub for McEwen for the entire week of April 10, which happens to coincide with the show's move into a new: studio and the debut of its new set. Nelson said the work grew out of a phone call he got from CBS pro-' ducer John Goodman last fall ask-; ing to see a tape and mentioning the possibility of network fill-in work. Goodman called back the first part of this month and worked out the dates, Nelson said.

"This should be kind of an inter-; esting experience," said the even-i tempered Nelson. IT'S A LITTLE early to make sweeping judgments, but a spate of new or recently premiered shows suggest ABC is still several steps ahead of CBS when it comes to developing comedy series. A couple of weeks ago, for example, ABC took the wraps off two sitcoms, "Anything But Love," starring Richard Lewis and Jamie Lee Curtis, and "Coach," starring Craig T. Nelson and Shelley Fabares. Tonight, CBS unveils its own pair of new comedies, "Live-In," starring nobody you've ever really heard of, and "Heartland," starring Brian Keith.

The contrasts are dramatic. "Anything But Love" is a breezy contemporary comedy snuggled into a cozy Tuesday time period between "Roseanne" and "thirty-something." Lewis, a stand-up comic whose on-stage personna is an always-dressed-in-black young Jewish fatalistic paranoid, plays an accomplished staff writer for a city magazine based in Chicago. Jamie Lee Curtis, whose comedy work in such films as "A Fish Called Wanda" has brought her increasing professional respect, plays a researcher trying to work her way into a full-time writer's job. The two become involved in a fledgling romance, which unfolds amid the pressures of publishing and with the magazine's odd assortment of staffers as witnesses. The shov has aired twice and shows con; promise.

Curtis' unfettered enthusiasm plays well against Lewis' laconic death-is-near attitude, and the supporting cast adds a good mix of comic shadings. The writing has yet to catch up to the characters not unusual in sitcom evolution but if it does, this could be a pretty funny show. "Coach" also seems promising, although a tough Wednesday-at-8 time slot will put added, pressure on the always difficult struggle for survival. Still, Nelson, a fine and versatile actor who seems to have done more movies than TV shows recently, is extremely appealing as the coach of a small-college football team whose life is upended when his daughter arrives as a freshman. The girl was raised by her mother, from whom the coach was divorced many years ago.

He's trying to figure out how to be a father to his daughter, but he knows enough to know he has no idea how to do that. He's also a set-in-his-ways bachelor, romantically involved with Shelley Fabares, and a bit of a well-meaning bumbler when it comes to sensitivity and emotions. As on "Anything But Love," the writing on "Coach" is still pretty shapeless, relying more on standard gags and lines than on humor that's driven by characters instead of situations. But there's enough meat here to suggest the possibility of progress if bad ratings don't kill it prematurely. Over at CBS, things don't look as rosy.

A scheduling flub at Channel 4 made "Heartland" (tonight at 7:30) unavailable for. screening by SENATOR Now that the long-distance call has replaced the written plea tor money from home, many a collegian will never have a chance tO' display literary greatness.
