ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 6C SPORTS FRIDAY, MAY 5, 1989 Scouts Watch Worrell's Brother FOR THE RECORD Girls Swimming ABC Masters Tournament WICHITA, Kan. WEDNESDAY, MAY 10 Chicago at Calgary, 8:35 p.m. (If didn't pitch an inning as a freshman at Biola. "I ended up quitting the team and' not finishing out that year," he said. "I even dropped most of my classes." After rejoining the team as a sophomore, Worrell struggled through a 3-9 season. He sat out last season as a redshirt, and not having played for more than a year, Worrell said he eagerly anticipated the start of this season.

"The first game I gave up seven runs because I hadn't pitched in so long, but I was just happy to get back," he said, adding that he rejoined the team with more confidence and "a better mental approach to the game" this season. Certainly it has made a difference in his performance. Despite the recent struggles, Worrell has 94 strikeouts in 79 innings. Statistics such as those have caught the attention of major-league scouts. Worrell said he has been scouted by about 10 pro teams and that there usually is a scout or two at each game he starts.

"He has a lot of innate physical baseball talent," Biola coach Charlie Sarver said. "The sky's the limit for him." While there have been similarities." in the pitching careers of the Worrell brothers Todd played outfield more than he pitched until late in his college career Tim says it is dWfl" cult to make comparisons. He said -I they both have a good fastball but-1 "Todd throws the ball so much faster." While Todd's pitches routinely are clocked in the mid-90s, Tim's average speed is closer to the mid-80s. The younger Worrell, who is a couple of1 inches shorter than his 6-foot-5 broth'" i ter, also relies more on what Sarver said is an outstanding slider. Tim credits some of his improvement to working with his brother, although that was not the case at first.

"The year he got drafted (1 982) was the year I first tried pitching. I never 1 really watched his pitching to the point that it helped me learn something. But after that, in the he'd help me out with my pitching." ty Worrell realizes that he still has a long way to go if he hopes to make it to the majors. "I need to develop my he said. "I rely on my slider, a i-little too much.

I can get away in this league, but I don't think I can- do that after college." 1989, Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES The last week has been a stretch of the baseball season that pitcher Tim Worrell of Biola University would just as soon forget. Worrell, a 21-year-old junior, appeared in three games and suffered three losses. Two of those were in a doubleheader with Cal Lutheran. That has not done wonders for Worrell's record and earned-run average, which have gone, respectively, from 7-2 and 2.06 to 7-5 and 3.87. But all things considered, the, younger brother of Cardinals relief pitcher Todd Worrell has little reason to be disappointed with his progress this season.

Especially when one considers how long he has been pitching. "I definitely am a late bloomer, pit-chingwise," Worrell said. "This is basically my third full year of pitching. I haven't done a lot of pitching in my career." Tim Worrell's career has closely paralleled that of Todd, 29. He attended the same high school as his brother before enrolling at Biola and, like Todd, was hardly an overnight success.

He didn't pitch regularly in high school until his senior year, and he Worrell 1986: 1987: 1988: 1989: Totals W-L ERA IP SV 1-1 1.08 16.2 3 0-0 5.40 5.0 3 0-2 4.85 13.0 6 0-1 1.35 13.1 3 1-4 2.62 48.0 15 started really throwing hard," Roarke said. "The last couple of years, he was throwing real hard, but his location wasn't good. That's what we wanted to work on this spring. "You have to remember also that last year he was out with a little bit of a leg problem. That made it difficult.

If you're a little stiff and sore, and you have a mechanical problem, you're not going to pitch too well." Worrell was determined to avoid such problems this time. He paid little attention to results or statistics this spring and kept his mind on one thing. "I'm in spring training basically for one reason," he said. "I want to get my arm in shape. Whatever it takes to do that, that's what I'm going to do.

"I didn't worry about going out there and blowing anybody away." A popular theory expressed in the past is that a power pitcher isn't at his best until the weather heats up. The cool spring climate supposedly keeps a hard thrower from getting loose. Because Worrell usually pitches no more than one or two innings, he would be particularly suceptible. The weather-theory proponents might point to the unusually temperatures during the long home stand and offer a simple explanation for Worrell's efficiency. Hot weather, hot Worrell.

Hogwash, according to Roarke. "The weather didn't have anything to do with it," he said. "That doesn't make any difference. The weather af- From page one year, he picked up six saves in April. But he also was 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA.

Yet Worrell just came cruising out of April with a 1.35 ERA, tops on the team. He also is three for three in save opportunities. "We tried to do some things differently this spring," said Worrell, 29. "I tried to cut down on things. You never have a power pitcher tuned up and ready to get off the get-go anyway.

"This spring, we relaxed and took a little different approach." Pitching coach Mike Roarke said he felt that Worrell had tried to throw too hard too early in the past. "He would tighten up," Roarke said. "We tried to hold him back as much as possible this spring. "The first three or four times out he pitched, we had him throw about 75 percent and try to let him get a feel. That's hard for guy like that to do.

But we wanted him to work on some other things before he really started throw-inghard." In baseball, as in real estate, location is everything. Part of Worrell's early-season sorrows had to do with his lack of location. This season, he's on more corners than fast-food restaurants. "We tried to tune it up before we fects everybody every day. It's the same for everyone.

We had warm in St. Louis, but before that we had some cold weather in Pitt. burgh and Chicago. "'IW' "Really, it shouldn't affect him much, because 90 percent of the time, his pitches are fastballs." And for a change, Worrell is a fast--ball pitcher off to a fast start. Instead of being bounced around, Worrell now bounces around the clubhouse and gerly anticipates the rest of them, season.

"You come into the season and you hope you can dodge the bullet on," he said. "If I can get out of the chute early, it's going to make a difference for both me and the "It's momentum.
