ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH VHW February 21,1979 31) Flames Scorch Caps, Climb Past Rangers Consult Heinrich Before You Draft enough. I kind of figured Guy would be in front of the net if I had the puck." The Caps got first-period goals from Bob Girard and Dennis Maruk and one from Mark Lofthouse in the third period. BRUINS $, ROCKIES Peter McNab and Rick Middleton each scored two-, goals and added two assists for while Terry O'Reilly had a goal and four assists. McNab scored his goals in the first period as the Bruins took a 2-1 lead.

Boston ran the score to 5-1 before Bill Lochead and Ron Delorme scored for the Rockies, who have a seven-game losing streak, in the final eight minutes. Middleton, having his finest season, scored his 25th goal at 8:45 of the second period to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead and O'Reilly scored on a power play one, minute into the final period. FLYERS CANUCKS Jere Gillis power-play goal midway through the, final period gave Vancouver the tie. Gil-lis scored with 9:16 remaining when his. shot from the right faceoff circle deflect-, ed off the Flyers' Andre Dupont past-goalie Wayne Stephenson.

The Flyers' had taken a 3-2 lead in the second period, on two goals by Rick MacLeish and one by Reggie Leach. Harold Snepsts scored, a power-play goal for Vancouver late in the opening period while rookie Curt Fraser's tally gave the Canucks a tem-, porary 2-2 tie in the second. The Atlanta Flames are hot again. Guy Chouinard and Eric Vail scored 13 seconds apart midway through the final period Tuesday night, igniting the Flames to a 5-3 triumph over the visiting Washington Capitals that lifted them into second place in the National Hockey League's Patrick Division, one point ahead of the idle New York Rangers. Elsewhere, the Adams Division-leading Boston Bruins downed the Colorado Rockies, 5-3, at Denver and the Philadelphia Flyers and the Canucks skated to a 3-3 tie at Vancouver.

Chouinard had two goals and an assist while linemate Vail picked up three assists in addition to his goal. Chouinard gave the Flames a 3-2 lead by converting a pass from Vail with nine minutes left in the game. Vail scored the winning goal 13 seconds later from 10 feet in front of Washington goalie Bernie Wolfe after taking a pass from Chouinard. Vail also assisted on Chouinard's insurance goal, his 34th of the season, with 1:30 remaining. The Flames have won three straight and haven't lost in four games since the All-Star layoff.

"The opportunities were there and the passes went through," said Vail. "We moved the puck by them a couple of times and they couldn't react quickly HOOK SHOT: Colorado's Barry Beck thwarted the slowdown tactics of Boston's Terry O'Reilly in a race for the loose puck Tuesday night, but the Rockies were thwarted by the Bruins, 5-3, for their seventh straight loss. (UPI Telephoto) what he calls "geographically located" scouts. Their names will forever remain secret, he said, but each acquired his employer's permission to participate. At minimal cost, he had assembled his own staff.

Heinrich sent each expert a list of 240 college seniors, requesting the names of any glaring omissions, and requested individual grades under this format: Five Points can't miss prospect, sure start in first year; Four Points solid player, good enough to start within two or three years; Three Points legitimate prospect, talented enough to make many rosters; Two Points marginal prospect; One Point player with minimal chance to make cut; No Points no chance. Why make the draft so complicated, right? "Our contacts were solid through all of the bowl games," said Henrich. "After that, scouts get too involved with their own clubs to maintain any outside interest. We assembled the scores from all our sources and averaged them for a final grade." It is not a unique concept, rating the college plums. Much to his surprise, Heinrich learned that at least four other publications try to do just what he does.

But none, he claimed, do it particularly well. And all are rather expensive. So the man who once played with Frank Gifford, Tom Landry and Pat Summerall strived for something of better quality and greater depth. It would seem that he has succeeded, scouting handbooks are your bag. Volume I includes a synopsis of each NFL club's current needs, past drafting performance and 1979 drafting position.

(According to the handbook, incidentally, the last Big Red draft was rated somewhere between fair and good). At each position, no more than 12 nor less than five college prospects are profiled by size, weight, speed and rating. Missouri's Kellen Winslow, for instance, is credited with 4.8 speed in the 40-yard dash and an overall rating of 4.6. Heinrich calls him "unquestionably the best prospect at tight end." For those interested in looking yet another year ahead, Heinrich's handbook previews the 1980 draft, too, although he remains reluctant to sound too authoritative. "I've been exposed to enough drafts," he said, "to know the pandemonium that goes on during the selection.

Sometimes the choice your team winds up making is a real surprise." Funny he should notice. He never even worked for the rWwe CSoseout SO 2n7f5 ea. Orig. $26, plus 1.69 fed. tax, Size A78-13.

Price also was ordered to spend 10 days next summer teaching without charge in a hockey school for youths. Rookie left wing Tony McKegney, the Buffalo Sabres' first black player, has been assigned by the Sabres to their Hershey, farm team in the American Hockey League. McKegney, Buffalo's second choice in last year's amateur draft, had seven goals and 14 assists in 50 games with Buffalo this season but had seen little action in recent games while playing behind four veteran left wings. Goalie Doug Grant posted his third shutout of the season for the Blues' Salt Lake City farm team in the Central Hockey League as it defeated the Tulsa Oilers, 4-0. By Tom Barnidge Of the Post-Dipotch Staff The best fullback coming out of the National Football League's college draft this spring will be Greg Hawthorne of Baylor.

The best quarterback? Jack Thompson of Washington State. If you want an inside linebacker, take Tom Cousineau of Ohio State. Among outside linebackers, Jerry Robinson of UCLA is the best bet. These are the definitive proclamations of Don Heinrich, who will be happy to run down the ratings on 124 other top prospects for 1979, at a cost of $6.50 (P.O. Box 17704, Seattle, 98107).

Heinrich, an NFL quarterback for eight seasons and an assistant coach for 12 more, has lent his name and his insight to a 36-page booklet that rates, classifies and describes the stars soon to rise on professional football's horizon. "Don Heinrich's Scouting Report," it's called. "A comprehensive analysis of the 1979 draft." A mouthful, to be sure. And it is presented in no uncertain terms as to who belongs where and why. But the man behind the project is not nearly so pretentious as this first impression.

Fact is, he said, this inaugural volume arrived as a lark. Its future will depend on its reception. "I was approached by some friends in Seattle," he explained. (Heinrich is a color analyst for broadcasts of Seattle Seahawks games). "They wondered if I would like to get involved in putting the product together.

"Well, I've always been interested in the draft, and a few of my friends are interested, but I didn't believe there was enough general interest by fans to justify a book. My friends assured me there was." Friends Shane O'Neill and George Hill were fully prepared, too, from a production standpoint. What they needed was a man with a name and with contacts. Heinrich's name goes back to 1954, when he first began quarterback-ing the New York Giants. So do his contacts.

"I guess I've been through about a zillion drafts," said Heinrich, who served coaching stints with the Giants, Cowboys, Rams, Steelers, Saints and 49ers. "And I know for a fact that there is no unanimous opinion on which players belong where in the ratings. "I've seen one scout rate a guy 40th in the nation and the guy next to him rate the same guy 200th. How in the hell do you explain that? But when it comes to the really top players, most times there's not much disagreement." With about a dozen well placed phone calls, Heinrich enlisted the services of Hockey FROM PAGE ONE Watching and listening to the reactions of the fans at the Checkerdome whenever there is a fight in a Blues' game, it is difficult to argue with that thinking. Fights always are cheered lustily.

But we wonder whether the fans would prefer cheering for a victory or for a fight? Maybe if more emphasis were placed on skating and passing, there would be more to cheer about. There is nothing wrong with a good, hard legal body check. But there shouldn't be any room for the goon tactics. If the NHL really wants to get maximum mileage out of the fights, why not make even more of a spectacle of them? The referee and the two linesmen could vote to determine which player won the fight. The public address announcer then could inform the fans, "By a unanimous decision, the winner of that fight was Feisty McKnuckle." Or, if the fight wasn't that one-sided, the announcement could be, "By a split decision, the winner of that fight was Jean-Guy LeFist." Naturally, the winner would have to Transactions BASEBALL MINNESOTA TWINS Signed Ditcher Paul Hartzell and outfielder Gary Ward.

Why not give the winner of unanimous decision 10 extra minutes the penalty box? His team would have play shorthanded for those 10 minutes and the player himself would have to sit out 15 minutes missing at least two or three regular shifts. A split decision winner would get only five extra minutes in the penalty box. Also, the NHL could keep statistics on the winners and losers of all fights throughout the season, with a prestigious trophy to be awarded at the end of the season to the player who won the most fights. The trophy, of course, would have to be the Punch Imlach Award.
