Press, PG Strike Continues PITTSBURGH (AP) Negotiations between the Pittsburgh Press Co. and the striking pressmen's union were to resume today after both sides reported "some progress" in Wednesday's session. The strike by Pittsburgh Pressmen's Local 9 has halted publication of both the Pittsburgh Press and the Post-Gazette since Sunday night. A union source said the main stumbling blocks in the bargaining are wages and the company's move to limit overtime for the press operators.

The Press has begun laying off 1,100 non-editorial employ- es as a result of the work stoppage and the Post-Gazette has notified its editorial workers that a decision will be made on their working status Friday. Breakthrough In Synthesize Human Growth Hormone I would like to thank the community of Diarnondville for the gift received from them at Christmas Shut-in Betty States. 158xS Dies In Crash BUTLER. Pa. (APi-A twocar collision in nearby Butler Township Saturday night killed one of the drivers. Richard Eberle.

18. of Butler. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Faced with inflation and budgetary cuts, the scientists who synthesized human growth hormone had to borrow a $30,000 instrument to finish their work. Announcement of the synthesis, a breauthrough in hormone research, was made Wednesday at a news conference by Dr. C.

H. Li, professor of biochemistry and director of the Hormone Research Laboratory at the University of California at San Francisco. Li's career studying hormones, the chemical messengers that regulate the body's functions, spans 32 years. The instrument borrowed from the Children's Cancer Research Institute in Boston, was used in the step- bystep construction of the hormone, which is a chain-like protein molecule of 188 amino acid links. Li and his colleagues borrowed it when they were unable to buy their own because of financial pressures on the laboratory caused by inflation and general cutbacks in federal funding of scientific- research.

Synthesis of human growth scientists a powerful new tool for probing many diseases, including cancer, arteriosclerosis and dwarfism. Human growth hormone is secreted by the pituitary, a gland the size of a pea located at the base of the brain. The pituitary secretes more than a dozen hormones that in turn control secretion of still more hormones by other glands. In the past, HGH was available only pituitaries taken from cadavers. The small, expensive supply was enough only for study of its structure and function and treatment of a few isolated cases of dwarf- isrn in children.

It was found to be effective in overcoming dwarfism caused by pituitary problems. But scientists discovered that HGH and growth hor- mone from sheep and cattle when administered to laboratory animals caused other effects besides stimulating growth. The hormone appears to hasten the healing of fractures and wounds, enhances the effectiveness of the sex hormones, aids the body in production of antibodies to fight disease and lowers cholesterol in the blood. "If you can synthesize a growth molecule, as we have done, then perhaps you can synthesize an antigrowth molecule and then an anticancer molecule," Li said. "Not only normal tissue growth, but abnormal tissue growth, like cancer, may depend on this molecule." Since HGH affects cholesterol levels in the blood, and cholesterol is a factor in coronary heart disease, perhaps a slight change in the HGH molecule could lead to a chemical to control the arteriosclerosis-producing cholesterol, Li said.

And understanding how the hormone aids the body in generating antibodies to fight disease could lead to a new understanding of the body's natural defenses and how to manipulate them. Although the artificial HGH hasn't been tried on humans, Li said he was confident it would exhibit the same effects as on animals. He predicted that within a few years commercial firms will find an economical way to mass produce HGH. "This is the largest protein molecule anyone has ever synthesized," Li said. "Everybody discouraged me when I began this.

They said it was a ridiculous task to build a molecule with 188 amino acids." JESSE E. ALLSHOUSE, 80, 626 Locust Indiana, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1971, at the family home. A son of Samuel B. and Nancy Jane Buzzard Allshouse, he was born Aug.

22, 1890, in Washington Indiana County. Mr. Allshouse had lived almost his entire life in Indiana where he had been associated for 41 years with the Indiana Hardware Co. until his retirement. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Indiana.

Rap Shafer Veto Of Safety Bill HARRISBURG (AP)-A labor official has charged that Gov. Shafer's veto of an amendment making state investigations of industrial health and safety hazards public record was "completely indefensible and showed a total lack of understanding and concern for the safety, health of the lives of workers in industrial plants." Julius Uehlein, state director of the United Steelworkers' legislative committee, said Shafer was "giving approval to the right of a company to force employes to work under any situation that might be detrimental to their health, until such time as a state safety inspector can see to it that they rectify the situation." In his veto Dec. 30, Shafer disclosure of such confidential material would impede and be highly detrimental to the efficient operation of this program." According to the governor, the proposed amendment would have changed the definition of "public record" to include any agency or departmental reports pertaining to the act covering health and safety in industrial plants.
