1 ABC) Five minutes before the hour. New Season Is Ethnic, Total Mish 'M-A-S-H' SOMETIMES THE EFFORTS of the television networks to amuse us are well, laughable. Over the weekend a viewer groping for escape from hum-drum could have seen a succession of new series that included sex-obsessed Army surgeons, ghosts, youngsters with tummy aches, a Catholic debutante in love with a Jewish cab driver, a psychologist with more lems than his patients and a nineteenth century tyrant who does his best to conceal the fact that he is lovable. A few thoughts on each, not necessarily in order of hilarity: THE TYRANT, OF COURSE, IS Yl'L BRYNNER in "Anna and the King" on KMOX-TV. Yul alternately rages and relents in his relationship with the pretty American schoolteacher (Samantha Eggar) he has brought to Siam, but the music from the play and the movie of similar title is missing, and so is some of the charm.

Most of the dialogue in the opening episode of the Sunday night show was taken from the original play and by now it is all pretty familiar. We'll have to see in future weeks if the writers can come up with good material on their own. THE PROSPECTS OF SUCCESS ARE BRIGHTER for "M-A-S-H." another movie hit transferred to the home screen by CBS-TV'. The producers use the same wild bunch of characters that populated the Hollywood version of the military hospital during the Korean war, but an entire new set of blue pencils was provided for the humor. Alan Alda plays Hawkeye and Wayne Rogers is Trapper John, the surgeons who cut a wide swath through military red tape in their efforts to save lives and seduce nurses.

It definitely is not family entertain-ment (despite its 7 p.m. Sunday slot), but the times they are 'a-changin' and "M-A-S-H" should do well with the folks who aren't watching "The World of Disney." I WAS HOPING FOR BETTER THINGS from the "Rob Newhart Show," but the opening episode was a disappointment. (I saw a much funnier segment in a preview in June.) Newhart portrays a psychologist with a luscious wife (Suzanne Pleshette) whom he seems unable to deal with psychologically. Newhart is treating a group of people who have a fear of flying, but when his wife confesses that she too is terrified by airplanes he says, "Honey, that's just stupid!" The Newhart show employs a laugh track that finds every attempt at humor a side-splitting occasion, even when Bob gets into a tiresome telephone routine when ordering airline tickets "I want 21 on No, 29 on the 28th No, make that 29 on No. 28 BEOPIIOLSTEilggl MAKE YOUR FURNITURE LOOK LIKE NEW 9 Nine to Get Ready "Hospital Care and Labor" 10:45 11: 00" 11:05 11:15 2 News, Weather, Sports 9 Pulse 9 Flat River High Choir 2 Anthony Quinn in "High Wind In Jamaica" Million Dollar Movie 12:00 5 News, Sports, Weather 11 The Saint 12:15 "12:30 5 Insight (R) 4 Mwie.r"WichTta," Joel Vera Miles 12: 45 5 Weather "lTdbTf New 1 :20 2 News7Sports 25 2 ThouJhTfor'Today "270(T4 Horse Canyon," Joel McCrea, Mari Blanchard (1954) 1: 30 4 News 3:40 4 Movie: "Calamity Jane and Sam Bass," Yvonne De Carlo, Howard Duff (1949) TUESDAY MORNING 5:45 4 Devotion, News 6:00 4 Summer Semester 67305 Focus Your World 4 P.S.

Call 23 1 -7500 mi "BRIDGET LOVES BERNIE" IS A REVIVAL OF A THEME that made a play called "Abie's Irish Rose" very big more than 40 years ago, about the romance of a Jewish boy and an Irish girl, but the CBS-TV show doesn't seem out-of-date.

When the couple informs Bridget Fitzgerald's brother, a priest, that they are planning a wedding, Father Fitzgerald says, "I assume you have more than physical attraction." When they ask why he supposes that, he replies "Because it is 1972 and you want to get married." The parents of both individuals oppose the union. A typical reaction is that of Bernie Steinberg's mother: "I dreamed it was Seder and they came over with their five kids and three of them were nuns!" The prosperous Fitzgeralds deny being intolerant, recalling that they recently had a Jewish woman over for dinner: Golda Meir. was THE LAUGHS ARE PLAINLY AIMED at the little people on a Friday night NBC-TV show called "The Little People," but there are some lines for more mature viewers also. Brian Keith and Shelley Fabares play a father-daughter pediatrician team in Hawaii. In the initial episode Keith reluctantly submits to a tonsellectomy, an event made more distasteful by the last-minute substitution of a hippie-type surgeon from St.

Louis. "How can he operate with all that hair!" Keith asks. "He'll need one hand just to keep it out of his eyes." A LADUE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE, JAMES G. HIRSCH, is the author of Tuesday's ABC-TV Movie of the Week, "No Place to Run," on KTVI at 7:30 p.m. The story concerns the efforts of an aging grandfather to retain custody of an adopted boy whose parents are killed.
