v- TLG falls to Prairie stats ByJOHNR.COMBBrr Mtjf bt the Text! Luthtr.n would bUm better off If they had not in open date last week. The TLC squad made several errors last night and tell to unheralded Prairie View 26-14 at Matador Stadium as the Panthers cashed in on big plays against the Bulldogs' defense. The Panthers, who had scored a mere three points in their first fiva games, got their first touchdown of the year in the first quarter when they capitalized on a Bulldog fumble and began a drive from the TLC 38. The Panthers were using a new quarterback in junior Maurice Mitchell and he hit several key passes in leading Prairie View down to the TLC one where he then hit Randall King with a short pass on third down for the initial score of the contest. "Pop" Jackson's extra point was true to make the score 7-0 with 6:55 left in the first stanza.

TLC had their first opportunity in the second quarter when Hollis Pierdolla recovered a Panther miscue at the enemy 26 but four plays later the Bulldogs gave the ball back on another fumble. Jerry Rand then busted a 40-yarder and Prairie View capped another drive when Mitchell found King open again this time for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Jackson's PAT was wide and the score stood 13-0 with 9:10 left in the half. TLC's last scoring attempt of the half fell short when Mike Cantu was intercepted by Willie Thomas at the Panther six-yard line. TLC halted the Panthers' first possession of the second half when they gobbled up a fumble at their own 28 and then drove down to the Panther 18 highlighted by a 43-yard pass to Donnie Vorpahl but the drive fizzled when a Rudy Sanchez field goal attempt sailed wide.

TLC got a quick reprieve when the Panthers fumbled on a punt attempt and the Bulldogs recovered at the 14. Two plays later, Vorpahl ran in from the five to bring TLC to within 13-7 after Sanchez made the extra point. The Prairie View squad started the fourth quarter on their own 45 following a punt and halfback Norman Briscoe took a handoff and sped through the Bulldog defense for a 55-yard touchdown TLC RUNNING back Darrell Brown breaks the tackle of Prairie View's Michael Gunner (66) in early action from last night's game at Matador Stadium. (Staff photo) run to up the count to 19-7 as their placement was blocked. TLC again was set up by a Panther miscue later in the quarter when they started a drive at the Panther 23, and Mike Cantu made the big plays in leading his team to the four where he then spurted up the left side for another Bulldog score.

Sanchez' placement made it 19-14 with 9:15 to play. Late in the contest, a Joe Little punt rolled dead at the Panther three, but the Bulldogs could not stop Prairie View from garnering a first down and after a penalty against the Panthers brought the ball back to the 10, Mitchell teamed with "Monk" Jackson for a 90- yard touchdown pass to put the game out of reach with 1:23 to play. The loss puts TLC at 1-5 for the year and gave the Panthers their first win of the season. TLC will host East Central Oklahoma next Saturday night at Matador Stadium. How could they win in a rout over Boston College (you remember beat and then not move up from their number two ranking after Arizona upset Southern Cal? The answer is AP and UP! polls are regionally biased especially when it comes to ranking teams from the northeastern part of the country. Now why Texas would leapfrog over Penn State after having beaten an Oklahoma team that had won only one of its first three games is beyond me. This is not to take away from the capabilities of Freddy Ackers' team. They probably should have been ranked second going into last week anyway.

But the pollsters seem to have compounded their mistake by ignoring Joe Paterno's talented bunch of Nittany Lions. Some people claim that Penn State doesn't play anybody, but this Eastern power already defeated Nebraska and has games left with Miami (Fla.) and Alabama. Next year Penn State will play Notre Dame along with the previously mentioned powers. For those of you not in the know, Joe Paterno is Pennsylvania's answer to Darrell Royal. Paterno isn't just a good coach to Penn Staters; he is a deity.

The one good part of all this nonsense is that there is a good chance that Paterno's team will get their chance at Texas in this year's Cotton Bowl. It's a natural matchup and could decide the mythical national championship if both the Longhorns and Nittany Lions can escape the upset bug that has stung so many teams this year. Despite what the Alabamas and SMU's might do to wreck this potential battle for number one come January, the fact remains that number John R. Corbett Sports Editor one is in the eyes of the those eyes rarely look to the East. In case you wanted to know who is going to win the World Series this year, I suggest you take a long look at the Yankees.

In the past, every time they started punching one another and getting into arguments with George Steinbrenner, they suddenly wiped out everybody in sight. Well, thanks to Graig Nettles, the Yanks circus is center stage once more and you can bet that once the series starts, they will be the loosest bunch of ballplayers on the diamond. History always has a way of repeating itself. Last Wednesday's "Sports Stumper" asked to name the college where former Cowboy and present Bronco quarterback Craig Morton played. The University of California at Berkeley.

Today's trivia question comes from the world of the only one-armed player to play in the major on Wednesday. LOCAL SPORTS Sports is holding the top spot in the local flag football league after nipping a strong Boe's Ice House squad by a 129 count on Thursday. Evan's is now 6-0 on the Navarro Junior High football team was socked by Runge Thursday 28-0 to leave the squad with a 2-3 record. They play Falls City Thursday. Despite the loss, coach Ray Young credited Reuben Hernandez, Roy Gaitain, Darrell Dreibrodt, Jimmy Pastiano, Robert Chambers, and David Morales with having good games.

"Quote of the Week" comes from Happy Chandler (former baseball commissioner): "I haven't talked to my wife in two weeks; I hate to interrupt her." Seguin volleyball coach Kathye McCauley sure knows her opposition. After Madison went undefeated in the first round of district play, McCauley predicted they would soon lose. Two games later, Madison was saddled with a you're into bowling and haven't been to Sports West then shame on you. The new facility on Highway 46 is a great place for this family sport. Calhoun paces Rice over Tech, 30-23 LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Rice quarterback Michael Calhoun fired a school record-tying four touchdown passes Saturday night to lead the Owls to a sloppy 30-23 Southwest Conference verdict over Texas Tech.

Calhoun, a junior, rifled scoring shots of 16 and one yards to Hosea Fortune and 12 and eight yards to Deron Miller as the Owls, 3-3, swept to their third triumph in a row. The Red Raiders, 1-5, dropping their fourth straight, seized the lead twice on touchdown romps of five yards by Robert Lewis and four yards by Greg Lambert. But fumbles, interceptions and particularly penalties prevented the crippled Raiders from pulling off a fourth-quarter rally. SWT breezes, 38-14 By John Morris Staff Writer San Marcos Southwest Texas State continued its winning way here Saturday night, defeating Sam Houston State 38-14. The Bobcats' record now is 6-0 and the win virtually assures SWT of remaining the top ranked NCAA Division II team.

The fireworks started in the second quarter, following a scoreless first period. Defensive back Cyril Friday got things rolling with a 34-yard interception for the first touchdown. Friday ended the game in Brownwood last week also picking off an opposition pass. Placekicker Neal Neunhoffer added the point after to make the score 7-0. With senior quarterback Mike Miller returning to action, the Bobcats soon went back onto the scoreboard.

Scatback Donnie Williams made the score 13-0 with a 28-yard burst through the middle to the goal line to be followed by the PAT. Miller stayed in action until the fourth quarter when junior Ron Jacoby took over signal calling duties. Miller was observed on the sidelines having his left shoulder tended to. It was a left shoulder separation that knocked him out of action the previous week. Sam Houston Scott skirted right ena for 35 yards and a TD to shorten the lead in the second, quarter.

The extra point was added by kicker Phil Harmening. Spurred by runningback Vaughn Deary and Williams, SWT roared right back to make the score 21-7 shortly before halftime. Miller hit wide receiver Willie Jenkins with an aerial to put the Bobcats on the boards once again. However, the aerial show wasn't over yet. With only :14 seconds left before halftime, Sam Houston Bearcats' quarterback Dave Evans passed to back Tim Kroon.

About to be tackled, Kroon lateralled to fellow back Tony January, who went all the way across the SWT goal line. The play covered 80 yards. In the third quarter, the Bobcats added 10 more points. The first score came on a Neunhoffer 20-yard field goal. With 3:10 left in the quarter, Miller scooted over left tackle, reversed his direction and went stumbling into the end zone.

The PAT made the score 31-14. Miller hit Deary with a 30 yard pass to set up Williams' next touchdown. The drive covered 78 yards in seven plays. SMU romps HOUSTON (AP) Southern Methodist safeties James Mobley and Wes Hopkins returned interceptions 65 and 66 yards for fourth-quarter touchdowns as the 10th- ranked Mustangs took advantage of nine Houston turnovers Saturday night en route to a 38-22 Southwest Conference football victory. Aggies lose WACO, Texas (AP) Quarterback Jay Jeffrey, reinserted as the starter late in the game, drove Baylor 72 yards in the closing minutes Saturday as the Bears defeated Texas 1917 in Southwest Conference football.

The winning points came on freshman Marty Jimmerson's 21- yard field goal his fourth three-pointer of the game with 22 seconds remaining. Jeffrey dealt its first loss in three SWC games after freshman linebacker Kevin Hancock had recovered Thomas Sanders' fumble at the Baylor 28. Baylor, the defending SWC champion, raised its league record to 2-2. SERVICE sta Texas stunned FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (AP) Unranked Arkansas, ignited by halfback Gary Anderson and quarterback Tom Jones, shocked No.l Texas out of the unbeaten ranks Saturday with a 42-11 Southwest Conference victory over the astounded Longhorns. It was the second worst whipping Texas had received from Arkansas in the 63 years the two schools have played each other.

The Razorbacks bounced them 42-6 in 1938. The Longhorns joined the graveyard ranks of Michigan, Notre Dame and Southern California who had been listed No. 1 in The Associated Press poll then suffered an upset. Arkansas is now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in SWC play while the Longhorns dipped to 4-1 and 1-1. It was Arkansas' first victory over Texas in Fayetteville in 16 years and only the Razorbacks' third victory in 15 games against the 'Horns.

Arkansas pounced on an early fumble, cashed it in for a quick touchdown on a one-yard run by Jones, and the jittery Longhorns never recovered in the regionally televised game. Arkansas was ahead 15-0 before Texas ever had a first down thanks to a safety on a bad center snap and a five- yard touchdown run by Anderson, his first score of the season. The two teams traded field goals before the Razorbacks scored just before the half on a 19- yard touchdown pass from Jones to Anderson. With 44,031 delirious fans in full-throated roar, Arkansas ran the count to 32-3 on a four- yard Jones scoring run and led 39-3 at the end of the third period after Darrell Bowies' 19-yard scoring gallop. It tied the second worst defeat in Texas' history.
