April 12, 1974 ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH Susskind Returns To Podium; Barnes Plays Bartok Concerto By FRANK PETERS Post-Dispatch Music Critic Walter Susskind returned to the podium of the St. Louis Symphony last night after three months' absence and conducted a successful concert in Powell Hall. The orchestral playing was occasionally harsh and heedless of detail, had pace. The opening overture of Beethoven enjoyed an alert reading from the podium and a sumptuous string performance, too.

Susskind closed with a muscular, vivid performance of the Theme and Variations from Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3. The most remarkable thing about the evening was Darrel Barnes's playing of the Bartok Viola Concerto. By standard, performance any, good; coming from a musician within the orchestra, and one who has not attracted much attention as a soloist in his three years here, it was spectacular. to The are extreme difficulties at of Bartok's the concer-' pos, and Barnes prudently tem; slowed in certain sections, especially in the first movement, with Susskind's collaboration, This did not distort the musical ideas of the concerto, and it allowed Barnes to go after, and capture, almost every note of the formidable solo part.

He played in tune. His recently acquired Testore instrument gave him a rich, bright sound throughout its compass. The wonderful melody of the slow movement was shaped with the greatest sensitivity to line and phrase. In the final Allegro, Barnes gathered speed and took the passages at close to full tempo, without mishap; this went even better than the first movement, in which there had been some coarse orchestral moments, and Barnes drew from the audience a reaction of well -deserved enthusiasm. Schumann's "Spring" Symphony, No.

1 in flat, needed more than the thrust and direction that Susskind gave it. Restraint, for one thing; the frequent piano and pianissimo indications by Schumann could not get less than a medium roar from the orchestra, so the contrast between the end of the slow movement and the start of the Scherzo was sacrificed, along with many other opportunities that called for quick, delicate detail. And the "Spring" Symphony abounds in detail. The cellos in the Larghetto have a lovely melody, accompanied by an intricate rhythmic web of bowed and pizzicato strings and staccato winds. Last night the accompaniment was an indistinct rumble.

Susskind omitted the Harry Bearman Funeral Held Harry Bearman, who began working in the jewelry business when he was 13 years old and rose to head a firm with 42 retail outlets, died Wednesday night at Jewish Hospital. He was 75 years old. Graveside funeral services were this morning at United Hebrew Temple Cemetery, 7855 Canton Avenue, University City. Mr. Bearman and his son operated Atlas Jewelers, which was sold last year for $750,000 to Grand Union a New Jersey food and general merchandise retailing chain.

Stevens Dies; Was Teacher In U. City repeat in the last movement, but the playing had not been the sort that demands a second hearing. John Korman won a bow for his Tchaikovsky violin solo, and so did Roland Pandolfi and Carl Schiebler for their horn work in the Schumann symphony; their playing in the slow interlude that punctuates the finale was phenomenally right in pitch and phrase. Tentative Accord On Paper Contract Tentative agreement on a new contract between the Paper Handlers Union Local 16 and the (Post-Dispatch was reached last night. Details were not disclosed pending a ratification meeting of the union, which has not yet been scheduled.

Wages and other economic matters were the major issues in the talks. Agreement was reached about 10:30 p.m. after an all-day meeting with federal mediators at the mediators' offices. The union, which represents about 80 men at the Post-Dispatch, had completed a twoyear contract on March 31. Members had authorized negotiators to call a strike if negotiations reached an impasse.

Call MA 1-6666 SAN FERNANDO, Philippines, April 12 (AP) the sixth year, Juanito Piring, a laborer who earns about $7.50 a week when he works, was nailed to a cross today as a Good Friday act of sacrifice.

Piring, 33 years old and father of six, did not utter a sound as Medina Pamposa drove a threeinch spike into the palm of each outstretched hand with two blows of his hammer. Medina was dressed as Marco, the Roman soldier who drove the nails into the body of Jesus Christ. Piring, in a white loin cloth, a curly wig and a crown of thorns, represented Christ. Piring moved his lips slightly as the wooden cross was raised. A crowd of at least 4,000 milled around it in a carnival atmosphere of colored balloons and ice cream vendors.

Seconds after the cross was placed upright, Piring cried "Put it down! Put it down!" Piring was brought down. His pierced hands were bathed in alcohol and wrapped in white bandages. "I feel good," said Piring. "It hurts. Of course it hurts.

'But when I am on the cross, it is as if I am another person. It is as if Jesus helping me. "This sacrifice for the is extension of life of my mother and my sick child." At the foot of the cross dozens of flagellants lashed themselves with bamboo scourges. The flagellants had paraded through the town since early morning. They lashed themselves numb while helpers raked their backs with paddles embedded with broken glass.

"It doesn't hurt at all," said Alan Navarro, 18. He said he was scourging himself to help his sister, 16, who has a rheumatic heart. The Philippines, the only Christian nation in Asia, celebrated the death and resurrection of Christ with a six-day holiday.
