Dan Flavin Sculpture On Display Mar. 15, 1974 ST. LOUIS POST- -DISPATCH By MARY KING Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Dan Flavin, Sculpture with light, Greenberg Gallery, 7526 Forsyth boulevard, Clayton, through April 6. In Dan Flavin's large exhibit at the Art Museum a year ago, the relation of his fluorescent tubes of colored light to painting, sculpture and architecture was clearly seen, though as uncompromising of the work's uniqueness. In the current show, however, one doesn't think of sculpture beyond the physical presence of the fixtures, or its architectural setting beyond the walls that support those tubes and act as backdrop for the color washes.

Nor does one really think of painting beyond the common concern with color. In the current show, each of the five pieces has an 8-footlong tube of pink light surmounted by a centered 2-footlong fixture of another color: pink, red, yellow, green and blue. The long pink light sets the stage and the other color acts upon it. It is this interaction that is the central concern, or subject matter of these pieces. The changes produced by this interaction are dramatized by taking place on only the center portion of the pink tube.

The yellow and pink, and blue and pink pieces, on opposite walls of the gallery, clearly of equal brightness, have more or less predictable coloristic results. However, optically, after looking at the peach mix of the yellow and pink, the thin planes of the fixture, one which the yellow light becomes green. Instead of an additive mixture, the green bar actually drains the pink from its immediate area bleaching it into white. (After being drenched in the green light of one Flavin's "corridors" in the Museum show, the white corridor adjacent to it took on a deeply rosy glow. There must be some physiological relation between these three colors.) The red's only effect is that of density, heaviness and darkness that gradually lightens somewhat.

It throws no color the wall or the pink tube. Where the Museum installation was broadly ambitious dealing with planes, environmental baths of color, establishing and canceling architectural elements as well as using dramatic architectural schemes to emphasize color phenomena -the work in this smaller space is more modest in size and scope. Yet the exploration of color phenomena and the sensuous pleasure of their adjacencies and mixtures, the achievements of mysterious and poetic effects with mechanical and everyday means, continues and is not weakened for it pared goals. B. Everett Jordan Dies; Former U.S. Senator SAXAPAHAW, N.C., March 15 (UPI)-Former Senator B. Everett Jordan N.C., who led the 1964 Senate investigations into activities of former Senate Democratic secretary Bobby Baker, deid today at his home. He was 77 years old.

A spokesman for the family said Mr. Jordan had been in declining health for the last five months. He underwent surgery several years ago for cancer. Mr. Jordan, a Saxapahaw, N.C.

textile millionaire, served 15 years in the Senate before his defeat by former Representative Nick Galifianakis in the 1972 Democratic primary. The Senate seat was the only political office ever held by the stooped, gray-haired and softspoken son of a Methodist minister. In his Senate career, Jordan did not seek the public spotlight, preferring, as he said, to "do the little things, many of them which people wouldn't even think about, for people." Jordan was thrust into controversy in 1964 when the Senate Rules Committee of which he was chairman was given the task of investigating the activities of Baker, a $19,600 a year Senate aid who had accumulated a $2,000,000 fortune. The hearings dragged on for 18 months, and Jordan was assailed by Republicans, who called the hearings a "coverup," and said they did not go deeply enough into alleged sex scandals. The committee found that Baker was guilty of 'gross improprieties." He was indicted in 1966 and convicted a year later for income tax evasion, larceny and fraud, and sentenced to one to three years in prison.

He was paroled in 1972. Jordan's normal activities as rules chairman were mostly housekeeping chores for the Senate operations themselves, and he gained a reputation as tireless be the scenes worker. "We haven't been out for headlines because it doesn't suit the Senator's personality and it's not the way he likes to work," William Cochrane, a longtime Jordan aid, told an interviewer. Jordan had a key role in passage of acreage-poundage controls on tobacco and was instrumental in legislation producing a number of dams and lakes in his home state. He was an early supporter of United States policy in Vietnam, but changed his mind in 1971 and became a critic of U.S.

I things through a POST-DISPATCH WANT AD. CALL MA 1-6666 Kiel Performance By Johnny Winter By MERRILL BROWN Cries of "boogie" pleas for bluesy dancing music often heard at rock concerts, would have been entirely inappropriate at last night's Johnny Winter concert. But even with a full evening of the blues guitarist's rock 'n' roll, all but the least discerning Winter fans had to be disappointed with the show. Throughout most of Kiel Auditorium the sound was too loud, the vocals muffled and the echoes less than pleasing to the ear. In addition, Winter, one of the finest modern blues guitarists, seemed a bit tired during his hour-and-a-half set.

The opening act, Brownsville Station, came to St. Louis riding the success of their first hit single, "Smokin' in the Boys' Room," and their performance was highlighted by the satirical humor of lead singer Cub Koda and the leaping acrobatics of bassist Mike Lutz. Koda chided the audience's initial lack of enthusiasm and called on the crowd to keep in mind what he termed "The American Trilogy: sex, booze and the All-American His comments combined the inevitable "'Smokin' eventually brought the crowd to its feet, somewhat of an accomplishment for a group with only one familiar tune to present. Winter's best received numbers were also several of his best-known recordings, including "Johnny B. Goode," and his adaptation of two Rolling Stones' tunes "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Silver Train." Winter has been a good Stones interpreter on record, where his clear, crisp guitar work is often terrific.

But last night's performance enabled only those close to the stage to appreciate his rapid fingering of the guitar. Only the more downbeat blues riffs were effective in the huge hall, and too often the sound was reminiscent of an old, battered record. B. Medici. Mrs. Nixon's 2300-mile flight yesterday from Caracas took her over the Amazon River, and "my heart pumped," she said, when she looked down from 33,000 feet at the broad highway of water coursing through the jungle. "It was so beautiful." About 300 school children greeted Mrs. Nixon at the airport with a big banner reading "Welcome Mrs.

Nixon, American School of Brasilia." Calling it a "great sign," she said she would take it home to show her daughters, and "it will be a treasure" for the Nixon library. The first day of Mrs. Nixon's three-day visit to Brasilia ended with a reception for about 180 officials and other guests at the residence of U.S. Ambassador John H. Crimmins on the outskirts of the city.

Mrs. Nixon had changed clothes three times during the day but was bouncy and gay in the receiving line. After greeting Victor Andrade, the former Bolivian ambassador to Washington, she reported, "He told me I look same as I did 20 years ago." In p.m. Sat. Robert G. Aboussie, who negotiated the purchase of property for the widening of Park Avenue between Mississippi and Grattan Avenues, will be paid $5375 by the City of St. Louis despite criticism that he charged too much for the work.

Aboussie, a cousin of Martie J. Aboussie, Democratic committeeman in the Ninth Ward, was ordered paid yesterday by the Board of Estimate and Apportionment over the objections of Joseph L. Badaaracco, president of the Board of Aldermen. He was outvoted by Mayor John F. Poelker and Comptroller John F.

Bass, the other members of the Estimate Board. Aboussie was hired at Poelker's recommendation by the city counselor's office to negotiate the purchase of 23 parcels of land. Eleven of them turned out to be already owned by the city through acquisition for delinquent taxes by the Land Reutiliaztion Authority. Badaracco asked why 226 hours were required to purchase 12 parcels of land. He said he was skeptical of Aboussie's statement that he worked 69 hours inspecting the parceis and 43 hours searching for the absentee owners of some of them.

Jack L. Koehr, city counselor, said Aboussie had to spend considerable time finding the property owners and traveling to their homes, which were often in the far reaches of St. Louis County. Aboussie's bill, he said, was not out of line with others submitted for the same kind of work. Would Fire Prison Head In Conjugal Visits Dispute JEFFERSON CITY, March 15 (AP) A state Representative has asked Gov.

Christopher S. Bond to dismiss the state prison director because he has allowed inmates to have conjugal visits while on furlough. The Representative is W. E. Blackwell Hermann.

He said yesterday that "under the liberal direction of its new director, George M. Camp, the prison is becoming a haven for criminals rather than a corrections institution." Current law allows inmates furloughs to seek employment near the end of prison terms or to visit ill or dying relatives. Blackwell said the law did not allow conjugal visits. However, he said he had been told by Camp's assistant, Jerry Bolin, that conjugal visits had been allowed for short periods. "What bothers me," Blackwell said, "is that a lifer would be turned loose, and he could kill somebody." Governor's office replied to Blackwell with a statement that a press aid said expressed Bond's feelings.

It called Blackwell's accusations "irresponsible political demagoguery." Camp said last night that Blackwell had misinterpreted his position. Camp said he did not intend for furloughs to be used for conjugal visits. Most of the furloughs have been from three to five days. a legislative committee hearing, Camp had said a bill to allow conjugal visits was not needed because the furlough program was an alternative.
