goad to my clil football, but fit they are quickly bftramftjt rule inttead of exception. The football season uoMto began two ago when the top-ranked AAAAA high school team in Temple, was turprised by a hungry bunch from LBJ of Austin. 'Wen, that's high school football for you', I thought to myself. Then last weekend the college foot- ban teams started their first fun schedule of games and once again I was startled as the scores slowly came over the Associated Press win so long Michigan, bye-bye Nebraska, adios Crimson Tide. Meanwhile the professional ranks added their upset quota as Pittsburgh fell twice and the lowly-rated Bengals zoomed to a 2-0 record.

Heck, even the Saints and Giants have won a game already. Just as I figured the upsets had finally run their course, along came some scores yesterday afternoon. Georgia was caught napping by Clemson while Notre Dame joined the long list of colleges who have suffered a loss as the top-ranked Irish joined the defeated XlMrtT 1 atthehindioii BBfon art Kite Cotch Jim Wacker of Mkii State, pite felting fexM Lutheran list week, noted after hit victory, "With all the ufMets that happened today I was beginning to get worried, it's certain Wacker isn't alone in that feeling. It used to be that high school and collegiate coaches would fear that their team would take a lowly opponent for granted and not be "up" for the game. But with the strange occurrences of the past three weeks, even if a team is "up" for a game against a weak challenger, the ill wind of upsets can still boggle football minds.

The reasons for all of these queer events are difficult to analyze. In pro ball the rule changes have made the passing game much easier which gives any team a chance as long as their quarterback is hot. But in scholastic and collegiate ball, the answers are nowhere to be found. There have been several years in the past that have been dubbed "the year Corbett Sports Editor of the upset" by various portions of the sports media. Well, you can throw those all out the window.

My vote for "the year of the upset" is 1981 and the season isn't even a month old. Last Wednesday's "Sports Stumper" question asked to name the first pro basketball team that was headquartered in San answer-It was the Conquistadors coached by Wilt Chamberlain. Today's trivia question comes from football Who holds the National Football League all-time record for fumbles hi a career? (Hint, it was a quarterback who starred in the sixties and early seventies.) Answer on Wednesday. LOCAL SPORTS SHORTS There was a big problem at the Charlotte- Marion game last week when Bulldog Marty Schneider suffered a serious laceration of the face. It seems there was no telephone at the stadium so no one could call the nearest hospital for help.

Relatives of some of the players were naturally incensed at Charlotte's lack of facilities. We'll try to get more on this during the week. TLC's volleyball coach Susan Duke took in last Thursday's volleyball match between Seguin and Lee. Duke once coached Seguin mentor Kathye McCauley. The Seguin High cross country team is getting ready to start competition this week.

There are many fans and coaches who are beginning to feel that the rivalry between TLC and SWT is somewhat ridiculous to continue considering the advances made by the Bobcat football program. SWC football roundup Texas dumps stubborn North Texas By JACK KEEVER Associated Press Writer AUSTIN, Texas (AP) John Walker and A. J. "Jam" Jones combined for three touchdowns rushing, and huge tackle Kenneth Sims led a defensive charge that kept North Texas State quarterback Shaw Thompson on the run as Texas took a 23-10 victory Saturday night. Walker, a sophomore tailback starting in place of Jones, who has been hurt, sprinted 26 yards for Texas' first touchdown.

Jones added two more scores on one- yard runs as the sixth- ranked Longhorns grabbed a 23-0 halftime lead. North Texas got a 42- yard field goal by Lonnie Green in the third quarter after Texas reserve quarterback Robert Brewer bobbled a snap at the Longhorn 37. It's only touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a three-yard pass from Thompson to Pete Harvey after Jitter Fields misplayed a punt at the Texas four-yard line. Sims, 6-foot-6 and 265- pounds, plugged the middle against North Texas runs, sacked Thompson four times and joined other defenders in pressuring the freshman, who was flagged twice in the first half for throwing the ball away. Those infractions cost North Texas 36 yards in penalties.

Texas' offense sputtered after the first half and the Longhorns missed their only chance to score in the second half when Ronnie Mullins dropped a long-pass from Rick Mclvor in the clear at the North Texas 25-yard line. North Texas lost its third game in a row. Texas drove 80 yards with the opening kickoff for its first score, which came as Walker dashed down the left sideline and carried Andre Mosley the final three yards into the end zone. Jones, a senior making his first appearance this season, set up his first touchdown with a 27-yard run to the North Texas two- yard line. Later he capped a 34-yard drive, which featured a third- down 26-yard pass from Mclvor to Mullins, by jumping one yard over the left side.

Jones, who led Texas in rushing as a sophomore and junior, finished with 105 yards rushing on 22 carries. Walker, the nation's No. 10 rusher with 155 yards in the opener against Rice last Saturday, gained 79 yards on 19 carries. Thompson finished with only 12 completions for 180 yards SCRAMBLING after a fierce Roosevelt rush is Seguin punter Scott Roessing (74) as Roosevelt's Reggie Trimble gives pursuit. Cornell 22 Baylor escapes with win, 28-21 BV AI.AN SAVRR -r By ALAN SAYRE Associated Press Writer SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) Heavy duty halfback Walter Abercrombie bullied his way for two touchdowns and quarterback Jay Jeffrey threw 67 yards for another as Baylor overcame unheralded but determined Lousiana Tech, 28-21, in a nonconference football game Saturday.

In the first gridiron clash ever between the two school," Baylor the defending Southwest Conference champions didn't take the lead until early in the second half, after the Southland Conference Bulldogs dazzled the Baylor defense with a series of sideline and screen passes. Tech quarterback Matt Dunigan repeatedly embarassed the Baylor secondary with a passing barrage that produced a series of crucial first downs and two touchdowns. Trailing 13-7 at the half, Baylor regrouped quickly. Jeffrey set up the go-ahead score with a 44-yard pass to Jerald McNeil. Five plays later Abercrombie scored from yards out.

Abercrombie later scored from three yards out with 11:22 left in the game and backfield running mate Dennis Gentry plowed in from the 2-vard line five minutes and 13 seconds later to give Baylor a 2813 edge. But Tech's Dunigan connected with Leland Padgett on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 3:20 left and the Bulldogs succeeded on a two-point conversin to pull within seven. A last-ditch Tech drive died on downs at the Baylor 9-yard line with 59 seconds left. SERVICE ANNIVERSARY SERVICE SALE, Boston College surprises NEWTON, Mass. (AP) Leo Smith scampered 5 yards for the winning touchdown two plays after a Texas fumble in the fourth quarter to give Boston College a 13 12 upset victory in its season opener Saturday night.

The Aggies were leading 12-7 and had the ball at their own 8 yard line when defensive tackle Joe Ferraro forced a fumble by Johnny Hector that was recovered by linebacker Jim Budness. The Eagles lost 2 yards on the next play when the snap was fumbled but moved to the 5 on an offside penalty against the Aggies. Smith then bolted through right tackle for the decisive score with 11:30 left in the game. The pass for the conversion failed. Texas 1-1, had an excellent opportunity to pull the game out in the final minutes.

The Aggies took the ball over at the Boston College 17 after a low snap prevented punter John Cooper from kicking the ball. Three running plays moved the ball to the 10, but a 27-yard field goal attempt by David Hardy with 1:09 remaining failed when Kyle Stuard couldn't handle Jim DeSilva's high snap. Texas took a 7-0 lead on Hector's 7-yard run 4:17 into the game, but the Eagles tied the score when Doug Guyer fired a 26-yard touchdown pass to Brian Brennan late in the first quarter. Hardy's 23-yard field goal with 3:23 to go in the second quarter gave the Aggies a 10-7 lead and they stretched it to 12-7 midway through the third quarter when Steve DeOssie's snap sailed over Cooper's head on a punt play and rolled out of the end zone for a safety.
