Hagman follows blocker Doug Denny (20) while Central's Pete Mauthe (39) closes in for the tackle.

But Northside did accept the penalty, kicked again, and this time Central's Mike Andress took the kick and set sail down the left sideline for a 70-yard touchdown gallop. Central went on to win the game 42-6, following a Central eighth grade victory 12-0 over their Northside counterparts on the high school field. The ninth grade game marked the first time a Central freshman team has beaten a North-, side freshman team. Andress later added another TD on a 65-yard punt return. Tim Schmidt, Pete Mauthe and Ken Pritchard all scored on short ruos for Central, while Steve McClintic intercepted a pass for the other score.

Brad Herron led the Northside effort with a 35-yard Scoring run in the final quarter, Herron also intercepted two Terrier passes. McClintic, Mauthe, Pat Har-rell, Jerry Cox and Eddie Broughton were singled out for strong defensive games for Central. Central's eighth grade scores came on a 2-yard run by Barry Nelson in the first half and a 5-yard run by Maurice Jordan in the second half. Jordan's TD was set up by a 50-yard pass interception return by Eddie Hawes. Jeff Shoop and Chuck Lawhead led the stingy Central defense.

FOLLOW THAT BLOCKER Northside freshman back Danny Hagman (26) carries the football on a first half play of Wednesday's 42-6 loss to Central at the UPI Sports Writer Jim "Mudcat" Grant brought some welcome relief to the Pittsburgh- Pirates Wednesday night while Steve Ranko and, earlier in the day, Bob Gibson did their part in helping the Bucs open up a two-game lead in the hectic National League East. The Pirates obtained the 35-year-old Mudcat on waivers from Oakland Tuesday and one day later he turned in three scoreless innings of relief in Pittsburgh's 5-3 victory over Philadelphia. Renko, a one-time Mets farmhand who was traded to Montreal last year in the deal for Donn Clendenon, got some measure of revenge against his former teammates when he pitched Montreal to a 4-2 victory over New York. As for Gibson, he posted his 22nd victory and 10th in the last 11 decisions as St. Louis beat Chicago, 8-1, to drop the Cubs another game off the pace.

Grant took over for starter Bob Moose in the sixth inning and allowed the Phils only one hit through the eighth. Three relievers were used in the ninth with John Lamb getting the final out but not before the Phils had put the tying runs on base. Manny Sanguillen had three hits, drove in one run and scored two to pace the Pirate attack off loser Jim Bunning. Moose got credit for his 11th win against nine losses. Renko a 6-foot-5, 230 pounder, By WILLIAM VERIGAN UPI Sports Writer Bill Cogolewski, or Gogo, as he is certain to be known in years to come, has hardly had time to unpack his bags in Washington since being called up from Pittsfield, for a little late-season assistance by the Senators.

But he has posted two victories after two starts and a total of five appearances, Powell, Schooley Still Alive in PGA George Scott's bases-loaded single in the seventy inning ignited a three-run rally as the Red Sox beat New York. Rookie Roger Moret, who relieved Sonny Siebert in the sixth inning, got the victory in his second major league appearance to celebrate his 21st birthday. Clyde Wright pitched a three-hiter to join Dean Chance as the only California pitchers in history to win 20 games in one season as the Angels defeated Minnesota. Wright is now 20-11. Rookie Bert Blyleven, Minnesota's starter, tied a major league record by striking out the first six batters he faced but took his eighth loss when he was relieved in the seventh.

Alex Johnson hit his 13th homer of the year in the fourth for the Angeles' first run, and they got three earned runs in the sixth as the Twins fumbled two ground balls. Don Mincher singled home a run in the first inning and hit his 27th homer in the sixth to lead Oakland past the Brewers. Roland Fingers went all the way to pick up his seventh win against nine losses. including a 2-0 triumph over Baltimore Wednesday night. Despite the loss, however, the Orioles did clinch at least tie for first place in the American League East as the second-place New York Yankees lost to Boston, 3-1.

In other American League games, California defeated Minnesota, 5-1, Detroit beat Cleveland, 6-3, Oakland defeated Milwaukee, 4-1, and a twi-nighter between Chicago and Kansas City was rained out. Gogolewski allowed only a leadoff single to Don Buford in the first inning and a double by Frank Robinson in the second, and the Washington fans booed when he was replaced by reliever Darold Knowles at the start of the eighth inning. Knowles got the last six outs while giving up two more hits. GANG TACKLE The Northside eighth grade defense swarmed over Central's ball carrier on this play, but it didn't al ways work that way Wednesday night as Central stopped Northside 12-0 in the eighth grade game.
