4 Columbus Seniors To Graduate Sunday 82 Seniors in Columbus high schools will graduate Sunday in commencementbaccalaureate ceremonies to oe conducted at at Columbus North and I at Columbus East North's ceremony will be held in Memorial Gymnasium, with Susan Demse Newkirk as valedictorian and Anastacia Marie Sorg as salutatorian Diplomas will be presented by Le-Roy Nelson, principal, and Dr Law rence Heyerdahl, superintendent of Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. Karen Sue Yahnke will lead the changing of tassels. The Rev. Allen Wilson, associate pastor at First United Methodist Church, will give the invocation, and William Ken yon Daniel will give the benediction Music will be provided by the North's symphonic band, under the di rection of J. I was really sleepy Acton considered taking the General Educational Development test to get a high school equivalency diploma, but he decided instead to return to school and complete his classes "All I had to do was to go back for one year, and I could get a high school diploma instead of a GED." I felt that I would nave to have a high school education if I was going to get ahead." said Acton, who gave the invocation at the commencement. There are two other students in the Acton family Kimberly, 16.

a junior at Columbus North High School, and Teresa. 15. a ninth grader at Northside Junior High School. Acton and his wife. Carolyn, also are the parents of Sherry Kinnett of Olatha.

Okla and David Acton, who is stationed in Charleston. with the U.S Navy Kim Mullis of 1802' 2 Gil more was able to graduate because of Y-Med. the Young Mothers' Educational Development Pro-gram provided for pregnant teen-agers. When her twin sons were born in 1980. she had completed only one semester of high school.

After she returned to school ht aU most dropped out again. "One teacher said she was going to come and get me every day and take me to school, so that I would finish. She did it. and now I am graduating." The teacher was Nancy Ewert. director of Y-Med.

The Y-Med nursery school took care of the twins. Jeremy and Jamie, while Miss Mullis attended her classes. "If the nursery school hadn't been there, I wouldn't have been able to go back to school." "I've learned a lot since went back." she said. "The teachers were patient and didn't rush me. They will laugh with you and aren't all business like teachers usually are.

I felt comfortable there right away, more than I did at Columbus North. "I graduated a year behind." she said. "I should have graduated in 1982, but I finally made it." Miss Mullis is uncertain about her future plans but may continue her education, possibly tfy taking art classes at Ivy Tech. Harry Acton, a 43-year-old minister; and Betty Hulse. a grandmother All three donned dark green caps and gowns Thursday night and were graduated with their classmates in a commencement program at Lincoln Center They are members of the class of 1983 at McDowell Adult Education Center "If I could make it through high school. I thought I could make it down that aisle to graduate." said Mrs Hulse. 47. who returned to school 28 years after she dropped out She quit school to raise a family, an undertaking that she calls a "24-hour job After insisting that her children complete their high school educations, she decided to take her own advice Her first day at school was a little strange "I felt lost The other people were my kids' ages It was like going to school with my kids, and a lot of them came to me and asked for my advice when they were having problems.

I told them to ask their mom and dad about it Even though she felt uneasy at first. Mrs. Hulse said she became more comfortable with her classmates and has enjoyed her friendships with the students and teachers. Inspired by a new location for their classes, members of the adult education class of 1983 chose "A New Beginning" as the theme for their commencement ceremony Thursday night at Lincoln Center.
